The phenomenon of solitude-seeking tourism has gained attention in recent years due to the growing emphasis on mental and emotional health. While solitude has garnered increasing scholarly and practical interest, there has been limited attention given to how solitude shapes the eudaimonic, hedonic, and behavioral outcomes of tourists. To address the gaps, this study proposes a novel theoretical framework based on the Stimulus–Organism–Response theory and eudaimonia–hedonia literature, which examines the relationships between solitude, intrapersonal authenticity, self-development, subjective well-being, and behavioral intention. Through the analysis of 320 valid responses using partial least squares–structural equation modeling, this study indicates that the physical & personal freedom and intellectual & spiritual elements dimensions in solitude positively contribute to intrapersonal authenticity and self-development. Intrapersonal authenticity and self-development, in turn, lead to subjective well-being, which ultimately has a positive influence on behavioral intention. The implications of these findings for academics, destination practitioners, and policymakers are discussed.

Paranormal tourism has seen increased demand, particularly from those tourists who seek unusual or unique experiences. Various paranormal phenomena offer multidimensional experiences for tourists in different physical contexts. Similarly, the advancement of technology has extended the ability to offer more authentic on-screen paranormal experiences. This study aims to explore and compare tourists’ on-site and on-screen experiences at Hashima Island, Japan, with an interest in identifying paranormal-related emotions. Tourist reviews and comments from Tripadvisor and YouTube were collected, with data analysis conducted using grounded theory and Leximancer. Key findings indicate that besides core paranormal encounters, some inviolate features also contribute to paranormal experiences, with tour guide services impacting the on-site experience and video filming techniques influencing the on-screen experience. Furthermore, this work revealed several emotional dimensions, with “fear” and “surprise” positively related to paranormal experiences. By comparing on-site and on-screen experiences, this study offers marketing and planning suggestions for destinations seeking to develop and promote paranormal tourism encounters.

This article examines a unique aspect of the business travel industry whereby organizations worldwide are conducting corporate meetings within a socially responsible context. The aim of this study is to identify drivers of employee citizenship behaviors for staff participating in a novel program called MICE for COMMUNITY in Thailand. A mixed method approach included interviews and a self-report questionnaire of 245 employees visiting a rural community. Interview findings found that community understanding, self-esteem, and community fit were critical aspects of a positive staff experience. The strongest predictors of positive word of mouth and positive attitude toward revisiting the host community were community understanding and perceived community value. Novel predictors tested extend our understanding of employee citizenship. Key recommendations are made for government agencies involved in facilitating corporate meetings with a social responsibility orientation, nongovernment organizations, and corporate policy-makers involved in corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs.

An Analysis of Latent Demand In Language Tourism
IF 1.7 Q3 HOSPITALITY, LEISURE, SPORT & TOURISM Pub Date : 2023-01-01 DOI: 10.3727/154427223x16717265382813

Studies on language tourism have been scarce. Existing research has focused on language tourists and their experiences. However, no study has approached nonparticipants and latent demand in language tour ism. Latent demand refers to demand that cannot be satisfied due to particular constraints, and despite the interest of the individual. Yet, the characteristics of latent demand in this type of tourism remain unknown, as well as the constraints that impede the participation of these potential language tourists in language tourism. The present study aims to fill this gap in knowledge by identifying: a) the characteristics and constraints of latent demand in language tourism; and b) which factors predict the intentions of becoming a language tourist. This study comprises a sample of 1,462 nonparticipants in language tourism. Statisti cal quantitative data analysis (including a binary logistic regression method) was performed using SPSS. Among other findings, we concluded that several predictors increased the odds of intending to participate in language tourism (e.g., being single, being able to speak English, being enrolled in higher education), while others decreased it (lack of interest, lack of a travel companion, family commitments). Analyzing nonparticipants with high potential is key to remove constraints to their participation in language tourism.

The Relevance of Air Quality Perceptions on Travel Behavior of Visitors With Respiratory Diseases
IF 1.7 Q3 HOSPITALITY, LEISURE, SPORT & TOURISM Pub Date : 2023-01-01 DOI: 10.3727/154427223x16717265382804

Air pollution is one of the most challenging environmental issues influencing the lifestyles of the world’s population. Every year millions of respiratory diseases and premature deaths are directly attributed to it. Therefore, people who suffer from respiratory diseases are more vulnerable to varia tions in air quality, as direct exposure leads to exacerbation of symptoms, more hospitalizations, and behavioral changes. This study aims to examine the impact of air pollution on the travel behavior of people with respiratory diseases. To accomplish this objective, a mixed methodological approach is used, applying questionnaires and interviews. The results show that visitors with respiratory diseases are more likely to value air quality and to engage in adaptive measures to prevent the effects of air pollution episodes at the destination. This study enriches the tourism literature by examining how air quality influences visitors with respiratory illnesses and provides practical implications for the tourism industry.

Exploring the Resource Potential for the Development of Ecological Tourism in Rural Areas: the Case of Kazakhstan
IF 1.7 Q3 HOSPITALITY, LEISURE, SPORT & TOURISM Pub Date : 2022-12-19 DOI: 10.3727/154427222x16438247292409

Tourism can play an important role in rural development. Rural tourism can help diversify the rural economy, slow urbanization, and contribute to the economic viability and revitalization of these places. However, rural destinations need to audit the different resources they have to better understand what they can offer. Using the case of Kazakhstan, we adapt resource-based theory and use expert opinions and publicly available secondary data to assess the resource potential for the development of tourism in the rural areas of Kazakhstan. We use a range of methods such as descriptive analysis, cluster analysis, and correspondence analysis to show the resource potential of the 14 rural provinces in Kazakhstan in terms of transport infrastructure, housing & household amenities, communal services, natural & climatic, and cultural & historical resources. The findings reveal that rural Kazakhstan lags behind urban Kazakhstan in many indicators of socioeconomic development. However, experts agree that rural Kazakhstan is endowed with a multitude of natural, cultural, and historical resources. Investment in infrastructure in the areas of transportation, medical care, and communal amenities is needed so that the resources in these rural communities can be accessible for tourists. This type of analysis can be used in other emerging destinations to help them develop tourism and improve the lives of those in rural areas.

Tell Me the Story: Film-themed Guided Tours in London
IF 1.7 Q3 HOSPITALITY, LEISURE, SPORT & TOURISM Pub Date : 2022-12-19 DOI: 10.3727/154427222x16438247292418

Destinations are constantly searching for new ways to create new products in order to attract visitors. In this context, film-themed guided tours have generated additional attractiveness for screened locations in motion pictures. Previous research has recognized the relevance of guide's performance-role on guided tours. Nevertheless, little attention has been paid to the role storytelling plays in themed tours. Therefore, this article aims to examine how storytelling takes place in film-themed guided tours and which are the factors that influence it. By means of naturalistic participant observation and an inductive thematic analysis, three different film-themed guided tours in London are studied. Findings reveal five influential factors (story, guide's background, guide's skills, support material, and visitors) that offer deeper insights into storytelling in film-themed tours. Future research and managerial implications of the research are also provided.

What Deters India to Emerge As a Major Hotspot Of Foreign Tourist Arrivals: an Empirical Inquiry From a Determinant Perspective

This study investigates the major factors influencing foreign tourist arrivals (FTAs) in India by incorporating the impacts of structural changes in policies. This is very much relevant in policy making since it portrays which determinants attract and dissuade FTAs. By implementing ARDL to cointegration technique on the annual data from 1985 to 2020, it uncovers the long-run relationship between FTAs and its determinants. The estimates obtained from ARDL model interestingly reveal that in the long-run, real GDP of destination, real per capita GDP of source, terrorism incidents in source, and air transport connectivity of the destination with major source countries are the crucial determinants that encourage FTAs. In contrast, real exchange rate (RER) of Indian Rupee per US dollar, terrorist incidents, and cognizable crimes in the destination are observed to have strong negative impacts and are dissuading FTAs into India. Further, an application of dynamic ordinary least square (DOLS) and canonical cointegration regression (CCR) techniques validated the estimates, ensuring robustness of our findings. This knowledge helps the policy making in recommending more investment on factors of attraction and dampening the effect of dissuading factors. Identifying a country's strength and weaknesses in tourism helps in a long way to ameliorate FTAs and foreign exchange earnings (FEE).

Covid Crisis and Stock Market Crash: Evidence from Selected European Hospitality Firms
IF 1.7 Q3 HOSPITALITY, LEISURE, SPORT & TOURISM Pub Date : 2022-10-05 DOI: 10.3727/154427222x16438247292364

This article investigates the performance of 12 European firms active in the hospitality industry during the financial crisis triggered by COVID-19. The analysis adopts weekly data on the total number of confirmed COVID cases in EU countries for the period between the first week of March and the last week of December 2020 to estimate the impact of this crisis on the stock returns of firms with various financial characteristics. The estimations are based on the generalized estimating equations (GEE) method, which is a convenient approach for analyzing correlated variables. The findings confirm the negative impact of the crisis on stock returns. However, the larger firms with more cash flows can derive investors' positive market valuation through better self-funding. This study contributes to the literature by first identifying the drivers of the stock price returns of hospitality firms during an unprecedented economic depression and second by introducing the most practical approaches to help the hospitality industry to survive future health crises considering the design of this industry in the postpandemic world. The findings of this study provide vital themes for investment performance in the case of similar crises in the future.
