A decade ago in France, debate over Muslim girls attending school in hidjebs erupted into ‘l'affaire du tchador’. As the controversy raged in the press, a community of nations was coming together in western Europe, while communist regimes throughout eastern Europe were falling apart. Perhaps most significantly, a divided Germany was in the process of reuniting. This article mounts an applique of clippings to suggest that there is a correlation between the polemics over the hidjeb in France and these larger events simultaneously transpiring across Europe. Discursive opposition to the wearing of the hidjeb commonly took the form of claims that this practice transgressed two tenets of French republican tradition: that of equality (in this case of women) and that of secularism. This study contends that the widespread invocation of these values as inalienable French principles can be powerfully challenged. To arrive at such an understanding, it seeks out the hidden shape of that which presented itself as one-d...

As the writing of Aijaz Ahmad and Arif Dirlik illustrates, the direction of postcolonial criticism has moved towards an interrogation of its location within contemporary geopolitical power relationships. This self-critical emphasis has worked to foreground the ideological determinants of post-colonial theory, but it can also obscure the political efficacy of western critical frameworks. By emphasizing postcolonial theory's complicity with global capitalism, such approaches are in danger of reducing postcolonial theory to an effect of transnational capitalism, thereby leaving us with no ground from which to criticize contemporary colonialism. In response to these concerns, this article examines Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak's powerful rearticulation of deconstruction, Marxism and feminism, and its critical effectivity in the contemporary context of transnational capitalism. While Spivak's project has gained currency in a range of critical discussions which extend beyond her own geopolitical location — indicat...

Several cultural studies commentators have noted the processes by which the transnationalization of corporate identity has also come to signal paradoxically an increasing process of global localization. This article explores the complex articulations of the global/local as they are played out in the everyday, existential dilemma of clothing matters for immigrants. It examines the relationship of clothing to questions of cultural citizenship in the US, and remarks on the reinscription of ethnicity as part of a similar though different nationalizing process in India. The study argues that such fetishization of cultural identities is deeply embedded within the consumerist and capitalist politics that seeks to commodify such identities. It examines the paradoxes of this dialectical movement by looking at how mail order catalogs in the US market ‘ethnicity’ as a sign of a non-contestatory process of ‘Americanization’ to a public increasingly desirous of consuming an ethnicity that can also be relinquished at w...

Consider that the friars and the secular clergy each has its own form of penance; consider that the Franciscan friars have one manner of doctrine and one way of life and one dress and one way of prayer; and the Augustinians another; and the Dominicans another; and the secular clergy another … and it was also like this among those who kept our gods, so that the ones from Mexico had one way of dress and prayer … and other towns had another; each town had its own way of sacrificing.
