The use of social media in Greek museums during the COVID-19 pandemic

ABSTRACT For future historians, the year 2020 will undoubtedly represent the beginning of the twenty-first century, as the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic holistically shaped the fate of humanity for years to come, severely affecting all sectors even cultural organizations. Despite all of the challenges and problems caused by the pandemic, it has encouraged the development of a new digital landscape, through the services of which each museum will be able to expand its reputation and maintain and strengthen contact with its visitors, developing meaningful dialog and communication with them. To capture the reactions of Greek museums towards the restrictions imposed by the pandemic, the present quantitative research aims to examine issues of digital presence in social media, as well as their management practices. The study partly reveals the museums’ efforts to modernize, but it also demonstrates their inability to listen to and implement the standard practices of international institutions.

ABSTRACT This study builds on the multi-stakeholder perspective to explore the nature of stakeholder engagement across key areas of value creation in the museum context. The empirical research followed a multiple case study design, based on three cases selected in accordance with a maximum variation strategy. The investigation involved a qualitative content analysis of primary and secondary sources. The findings reveal a context-bound perception of stakeholders and varying conditions for their engagement in the value-creation process. The study provides a strategic perspective for a comprehensive, multi-layered review of the stakeholder engagement across different activity areas, and thus informs the formulation of strategies to improve the task-evidenced multi-voice narration within the scope of museum activities.

Quantifying factors influencing the interest in museums with the use of marketing mix modelling

This paper recommends the marketing mix modelling methodology for improving the marketing and exhibition activities at museums and art galleries as it can complement other currently used methods such as surveys or qualitative research. Focus is placed on the Zacheta - National Gallery of Art. Econometric modelling is used to quantify the impact of independent factors (e.g., weather, holidays, events and COVID-19 pandemic) on the popularity of the gallery. The impact of the media and individual exhibition types are analysed in relation to visitor interest. Recommendations for the planning of future activities are made.

The influence of visitors’ self-protective behaviors on social carrying capacity in museums during the COVID-19 pandemic

ABSTRACT The public health restrictions put into place to control the COVID-19 pandemic have greatly affected cultural and tourism institutions. Based on normative theory, this study aims to enhance the theoretical understanding of social carrying capacity by analyzing the impact of visitors’ self-protective behaviors and tourism risk perception. A visual method experiment was conducted in museum settings, which are typical indoor cultural and tourism institutions. Results show that the social carrying capacity is significantly influenced by social distancing and mask wearing. Specifically, the visitors’ crowding norm is 0.5 m∼1 m when wearing a mask and 1 m∼1.2 m when not wearing a mask. In addition, tourism risk perception has double effects on the crowding norm; ‘self pressure’ has a positive impact, and ‘group pressure’ has a negative impact. These findings can help museums manage crowding issues as COVID-19 continues to have an impact on the world.
