Media inform and obfuscate. Corporate motives influence how news is neglected, reported, and contextualized. It is informative to examine the extent to which news content varies based on source and period. As a longstanding critic of news media, and a leading public intellectual, Noam Chomsky is a worthy case study. Three author-created, corpora of news articles referencing Noam Chomsky were created. The corpora contained articles from Agence France-Presse (AFP; n = 54), The Associated Press (AP; n = 48), and the Cable News Network Wire (CNNW; n = 6), from the years 2012 to 2022. Number and length analyses, along with hypothesis tests, established the degree of similarity existing among the articles of the three news wire services and periods. Analysis of variance showed that news source was significant in terms of both the number of articles (H2), F(2,6) = 5.916, p = 0.038., and article length (H4), F(2,105) = 23.936, p = 0.000 ( = 0.05). Little commonality in content or framing was established among the three news sources or periods in terms of top words or bigrams of merit. Whereas there were differences in the absolute values and degree of change, each of the three news sources contained a slightly negative average sentiment score when using the AFINN lexicon. The results of this study, while limited to a single case, are illustrative of broader concerns and are potentially useful for those engaged in media studies, politics, rhetoric, organizational management, and the social sciences.

As the revolutionary culture is the valuable spiritual wealth of the Communist Party of China (CPC) from overcoming multiple difficulties and challenges, an outstanding achievement of the sinicization of Marxism, the traditions of revolution therein are important carrier of ideological and political education in colleges and universities in the new era. Containing the essence of Marxist ideology, the spirit of hard work and fearless sacrifice, the revolutionary culture is the inheritance and innovation of excellent traditional culture, and the endogenous power of cultural self-confidence. At present, the realization of the value function of the revolutionary culture in the ideological and political education in colleges and universities is faced with actual challenges such as the infiltration of western ideology, the lack of the subject function of colleges and universities, and the limitation of network communication. Giving full play to the main channel of ideological and political courses, strengthening the educational joint forces of revolutionary culture and campus culture, and innovating the revolutionary culture communication platform are the necessary ways to promote the revolutionary culture education.

China has entered a new chapter after the Reform and Opening-up Policy initiated in 1978, and all walks of life have shown a steady improvement. In recent years, China’s comprehensive national power has been rising, its international status has been significantly improved, and many political terms have sprung up. These political terms reflect the country’s image and the trend of national policy-making, which affects the shaping of the country’s image. Starting from national image and the process of translating political discourse with Chinese characteristics, this paper selects three representative political terms of “Chinese Dream” “Harmony without Uniformity” and “New Model Major-Country Relations” that have appeared in government work reports, regular press conferences of spokesmen of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and diplomatic parlance as the research objects. It means to discusses the relationship between Chinese political term translation and national image building and studies the influence of political term translation to build a peaceful, inclusive and win-win national image. Thus, improving China’s national discourse power on the world stage.

As a cross-discipline between linguistics and economics, the Economics of Language has been widely discussed by scholars both at home and abroad in recent years as economic globalization advances. Among them, English, as the most widely spoken language in the world, is involved in many economic activities of human beings. The location disadvantage of inland minority regions makes their average English education level low. Therefore, this study analyzes the costs and benefits of individual English education investment based on the Economics of Language and human capital investment theory, using questionnaire survey method and cost-benefit analysis method in economics, and taking English majors of Yanbian minority as the research object. The results of the study show that the benefits of personal investment in foreign language education of English majors in Yanbian minority areas outweigh the costs, and it is also an effective economic investment behavior. The results of this study can also provide an empirical basis for the formulation of policies on English education and economic development in ethnic minority regions. And to a certain extent, they can contribute to the economic development of ethnic minority regions, promote foreign communication and provide some help for regional language policies.

This thesis makes an analysis of Xi Jinping’s address at the 16th G20 Leaders’ Summit from the perspective of systematic functional grammar. It bases on Halliday’s theory of meta-functions, integrating ideational function, interpersonal function and textual function to analyze the social communicative message of the address. By use of the language skills of three meta-functions, president Xi conveyed his determination to safeguard the interests of the state and the government, call on all countries in the world to jointly practice true multilateralism, and promote the building of a community with a shared future for mankind. Also, the thesis reveals the hidden ideological meaning and social structure as well as power control relationship in discourse, highlights the core issues of the current world and emphasizes the global development strategic blueprint in the 21st century, which provides a new analytical method for us to learn about political speech.

This research tries to explore the linguistic factors affecting the citation rate of Chinese writer’s research articles. We selected 50 SCI journal article introductions written by English Native and Chinese writers respectively. We measured their readability using Coh-Metrix. We then analyzed the data based on Graesser & McNamara’s theory of multi-level discourse comprehension. Our results show that the introductions written by the two types of writers differ significantly at the following levels: (1) at the discourse level, the referential cohesion score of the Chinese writer’s introductions was higher than that of the native speaker’s, indicating a higher readability; (2) at the situation model level, the deep cohesion and time sequential scores of the native writer’s introductions were higher than those of the Chinese writer’s, suggesting higher readability. Our findings also imply that although some readability indices of Chinese writers’ introductions are higher than those of the native writer’s, it does not necessarily indicate high readability literally, nor good writing quality, which could also be an explanation for the low citation rate. Moreover, the results show that the readability parameters of Chinese and native writer’s introductions differ at various levels, so it is hard to conclude that the readability alone impacts the citation rate.

The development of the Internet has promoted the rapid spread of Korean entertainment culture in China. The “fandom culture”, one of its representatives, has gradually aroused widespread discussion in China in recent years. On the one hand, as one of the important ways of communication between fans, the fandom language has been paid more attention by the vast number of netizens because of its uniqueness. On the other hand, fans in the fandom, as the main body of the creation, are also affected by it to a certain extent, thus forming a sense of identity and belonging to their own identity. This paper focuses on a specific fan group (D&E) and explore its word features and social identity reflected by language through the research method of online ethnography combined with corpus tools.

By using “levels of categorization” in categorization theory in cognitive linguistics, this article studies Biden Administration’s cognition on China. After analyzing the categories it uses to recognize China in “Strategic Competition Act of 2021,” this article discovers that its categorizing model mainly consists of 5 modules: (1) dividing a category into semantically non-overlapping subcategories, (2) juxtaposing a subcategory and its elements, (3) ignoring the subcategory and upgrading its elements, (4) concealing the subcategory and its elements in the logical suppositions within the relevant discourses, and (5) putting some elements on the border of two subcategories.

The cognitive turn of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) marks the commencement of Critical Cognitive Linguistics (CCL), offering a disciplined theoretical perspective on the conceptualized linguistic choices which are identified as potentially ideological. Based on the newly developed theory of proximization in CCL, this paper sets out to analyze Donald Trump’s Speech delivered at 2020 Republican National Convention. It finds out that the former U.S. president Donald Trump is most skilled at construing spatial proximization in the discourse space to legitimate his behavior and ideological manipulation is subtly achieved by him through his combined use of spacial, temporal and axiological proximization strategies.

Emojis and memes have become prevalent in digital communication, particularly in intimate online chatting. This research analyzes the use of emojis and memes in intimate online chatting through the lens of rapport management theory, with a focus on two questions: 1) What are the characteristics of emojis and memes used in intimate online communication? 2) What are the functions of emojis and memes used in intimate online communication? Using ethnographic methods, data is collected from an online chatting group called “Siblings in law,” which consisted of four members. Our findings revealed three characteristics of emojis and memes used in intimate online chatting: 1) Emojis are used more often than memes, but memes are preferred by online interlocutors. 2) Different individuals have different preferences for emojis and memes, and they use emojis or memes that their friends like to use. 3) The same emoji used in a different context may convey different or even opposite meanings. Additionally, we found that emojis and memes in intimate online communication serve three functions: 1) They protect the face of interlocutors by upgrading praise and downgrading ordering utterances. 2) They help realize the association principle of the rapport management theory. 3) Certain types of emojis and memes assist in achieving the interactional goal of intimate online communication.
