The Analysis of Grammatical Cohesive Devices in the Abstract of Academic Discourse 学术话语摘要中的语法粘合手段分析

Coherent writing skills have a strong correlation with the quality of English writing. Abstract, as a relatively independent and complete discourse form that condenses the content of academic discourse, can predict and dominate the content and structure of the main text. This paper collects a total of 40 academic paper abstracts in the discipline of applied linguistics, 20 from Chinese students and 20 from international scholars, to compare the different distribution of cohesive devices between Chinese student writers and international Journal writers. Based on the study, we find that there is no significant difference in the frequency, type, and control of cohesive devices used by Chinese students and international scholars. But Chinese students overuse some types of cohesive devices, especially in the use of the conjunctive device “and”. The use of “I” has never appeared in the corpus of Chinese students and the usage of “we” has been used by Chinese student writers and international Journal writers. This paper also shows that Chinese English majors actively keep up with international journals and have a sense of international writing in the process of learning writing.

Analysis of the Conversational Implicature of Dialogues in Before Sunrise from the Perspective of Violation of the Cooperative Principle 从违反合作原则的角度分析《日出之前》中对话的会话含义

—A lot of information in conversation is not directly expressed, but implied and indirect, which often violates the cooperative principle in verbal communication and requires listeners to obtain the real meaning of the speaker through a series of “translation” behaviors. The study of conversational implicature is conducive to the correct interpretation of the speaker's real intention, so as to give full play to the communicative function of language. Based on previous studies, this paper takes the Cooperative Principle of Grice as the theoretical framework and the dialogue between the hero and heroine in the movie Before Sunrise as the research material, by discussing the effect produced by the violation of Cooperative Principle in their dialogues, so as to deepen the audience’s understanding of the movie and provide reference for communication in daily life.

Chinese and Western Cultural conflict and Differences in Thinking Pattern 中西文化冲突与思维模式差异

In the face of the worldwide changes of a scale unseen in a century, Socialism with Chinese characteristics has entered a new era that is China’s relationship with the world has undergone profound changes. China has never stepped into the center of the world stage before, and the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation has entered a critical moment. As an important part of internationalization and modernization of China’s education, this paper analyzes the differences between Chinese and Western thinking pattern, and try to research Chinese and foreign Cultural conflict. It analyzes the differences in values, political values and religious beliefs between Chinese and foreign students, analyzes the deep reasons of Chinese and foreign Cultural conflict from the three dimensions of practical logic, theoretical logic and era logic, adheres to the unity of criticism and inheritance, the unity of theory and practice, and the unity of inclusiveness and openness, treats Chinese and foreign Cultural conflict, cultivates students’ recognition of Chinese culture, and enhances their confidence in Chinese culture, Enhance China’s international image.

An Overview of “Turns” in Conversation Analysis 对话分析中的 "转折 "概述

Conversation Analysis (CA) derives from the 1970s, which was put forward by Sacks, Schegloff, and Jefferson for the sack of analyzing institutional talk, e.g., business negotiation discourse, and doctor-patient communication discourse and telephone conversations. Currently, it has become the most favorable and effective method to analyze interactive discourse. As the essential part of CA, the “turn” is the foundation of all the research, carrying talk information and social rules in interaction that plays an essential role in guiding the outcome of conversations in social communication. The thesis made classification, summaries and reviews on studies of “turns” in conversation to explores the orientation of “turn” in conversation by specifying the aspects of turn-taking, allocating, and repairing to make an overview of turn in conversation analysis and provide a spark for further study in the field. The overview helped to recognize current status and make a new attempt. It was revealed that studies of “turns” in conversation analysis are widely applied in healthcare, patient-to-doctor interaction in particular; during analysis of conversation, timespan and manners of participants were mainly focused. The thesis discovered a fact that studies of “turns” on on-line interaction is insufficient, which is significant under the current situation.

A Study on the Teaching Model of Cross Culture and Speculation on EFL Writing 跨文化教学模式研究及对英语写作的启示

Under the background of post critical pedagogy, teachers should pay attachment to the awakening of students’ self-identity consciousness and the cultivation of critical thinking skills. The teaching model of writing course adopted by the author is as follows: firstly, the writing course is equipped with a dedicated reading manual. It is compiled to establish cultural reading materials which include 12 theme reading passages to introduce Chinese and American culture and 12 writing sharing to promote identity thinking based on the relevant theories of Constructivism and Output Hypothesis by using the Flesch Kincaid Readability Test. The teaching process emphasizes the integration of students’ vertical and horizontal knowledge. Referring to the Knowledge Transformation Model of Writing proposed by Bereiter and Scardamalia, the teaching model vertically emphasizes the integration of pre-class cultural reading, in-class skill training, and post-class thinking reinforcement; it horizontally emphasizes on the integration with reading courses, cultural courses, and speculative courses. Overall, the model stresses the cultivation of cross-cultural communication skills. It emphasizes understanding oneself and the other and stimulates students’ writing interest in cultural reading; it emphasizes that the other is for my own use and enrich students’ cultural illustrations in skill training; it emphasizes that I see the world and reflect on my own learning, life, and social hotpots in theme writing. In short, the author actively explores “playing” with learning, “stealing” with learning, and “using” in learning.

In the field of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), divisions and essentialization are inherently embedded, calling for an argent need to address the issues of inequity and favouritism on the basis of speakerhood status in diverse teaching contexts. The persistent use of the terms, native and non-native English-speaking teachers (NESTs/NNESTs), has polarized our understanding of English teachers without leaving a room for fluid identities and thus has created an essentialized binaries of Self and Other in many contexts. This world-wide view of English teachers, despite receiving a huge amount of criticism, still exists. This paper will allow English teachers from diverse socio-linguistic backgrounds to address these issues and to reflect on their experiences as English teachers in the Saudi context.

A Comparison Analysis of Implicit Chinese Cultural Word Definitions in Export-Oriented Chinese Dictionary Apps 以出口为导向的中文词典应用中隐含的中国文化词语定义对比分析

Implicit cultural words in Chinese, such as color terms and numerals embedded with distinct cultural connotations, encompass both conceptual and cultural meanings. The acquisition of these Chinese implicit cultural words is vital yet challenging for learners. Presently, exportoriented Chinese dictionary applications serve as indispensable tools for learning Chinese vocabulary, playing a significant role in mastering implicit cultural words. This study conducts a comparative analysis of implicit cultural word definitions in four widely-used export-oriented Chinese dictionary applications (Pleco, LINE Dict, TrainChinese, and Panda), drawing on the cultural definitions found in the Modern Chinese Dictionary (7th Edition) application. The paper also advocates for the incorporation of standardized criteria, comprehensive definition content, and systematic regulations for implicit cultural words in export-oriented Chinese dictionaries.
汉语中的隐性文化词语,如蕴含着独特文化内涵的颜色词和数字词,既有概念意义,也有文化意义。对于学习者来说,掌握这些汉语隐性文化词汇至关重要,但也极具挑战性。目前,面向出口的汉语词典应用软件是学习汉语词汇不可或缺的工具,在掌握隐性文化词汇方面发挥着重要作用。本研究借鉴《现代汉语词典》(第七版)应用软件中的文化释义,对四款广泛使用的外销型汉语词典应用软件(Pleco、LINE Dict、TrainChinese和Panda)中的隐性文化词释义进行了比较分析。同时,本文还提倡在外销型汉语词典中加入规范的标准、全面的释义内容和系统的隐含文化词语规定。

The acquisition of these Chinese implicit cultural words is vital yet challenging for learners. Presently, exportoriented Chinese dictionary applications serve as indispensable tools for learning Chinese vocabulary, playing a significant role in mastering implicit cultural words. This study conducts a comparative analysis of implicit cultural word definitions in four widely-used export-oriented Chinese dictionary applications (Pleco, LINE Dict, TrainChinese, and Panda), drawing on the cultural definitions found in the Modern Chinese Dictionary (7th Edition) application. Resistance Against Oppression: African American Women’s Opposition to Gaze in The Bluest Eye 反抗压迫:最蓝的眼睛》中美国黑人妇女对凝视的反对

Toni Morrison’s The Bluest Eye describes the pain and tragedy the minority group of African Americans suffered caused by the abandonment of cultural traditions with her affective depiction. Focusing on the efforts made by some of the African Americans in this novel to fight against the gazes they experienced from both white oppression and male domination, this paper intends to discuss the attitudes and actions taken by those African American women in the face of double oppression from the perspective of post-colonial feminism, analyze their resistance to gaze, rejection to white aesthetics, and adherence to traditional values, in order to reveal the courageous and tenacious image of African American women portrayed by Morrison as fighters against unjust gaze.
托尼-莫里森的《最蓝的眼睛》以其富有感染力的描写,描述了非裔美国人这一少数群体因文化传统被遗弃而遭受的痛苦和悲剧。本文拟从后殖民主义女性主义的视角,重点探讨小说中部分非裔美国人在白人压迫和男性统治的双重凝视下所做出的努力,分析她们对凝视的反抗、对白人审美的排斥以及对传统价值观的坚守,从而揭示莫里森笔下的非裔美国女性作为反抗不公正凝视的斗士所表现出的勇敢顽强的形象。

An Overseas Sentiment Analysis of Xi’an City Based on Deep Learning and NOW Corpus 基于深度学习和 NOW 语料库的西安市海外情感分析

With the development of corpus linguistic and the inter-disciplinary application of deep learning, the quantitative research on the cross-cultural communication of city image is becoming more and more popular recently. The purpose of this study is to reveal the current communicative situation of Xi’an City on English online news medias and overseas audiences. This paper uses the real-time English online news Corpus NOW and public opinion texts drawn from Twitter as the research data. Firstly, this study analyzes the text data from the perspective of Word Frequency, Keywords, Key Word In Context (KWIC) and Collocation. Then sentiment analysis based on a pre-trained Natural Language Processing (NLP) model Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) is used to analyze overseas audiences’ attitude toward Xi’an City. The results find that Xi’an City is less reported by overseas online new medias than other 14 new first-tier cities in China. Southeast and Central Asian countries are the main reporters of Xi’an City. International society mainly concentrates on Xi’an City’s national defense industry (especially military aircraft), followed by its long history and economy. Besides, 46.2% of overseas audiences keeps neutral toward Xi’an, 30.4% have a negative attitude, and another 23.4% have a positive attitude. According to the research result, this study proposes three practical suggestions to help enhance Xi’an City’s international influence effectively.

This paper aims to compare Daoism’s “贵身”or Self-Worth and the idea of individualism. It conducts a comparative study based on their specific interpretations in the Tao Te Ching and Walden, revealing that these two philosophies share similarities in their treatment of the relationship between individuals and the material world, as well as individuals and themselves. The exploration of their similarities is linked to their philosophical foundations, their origins and development and key figures.
