Purpose

The impact of enterprise social media (ESM) on employees is not always beneficial. The constant connectivity of ESM can trigger emotional issues, threatening employees' psychological states. This study aims to explore the potential risks of ESM usage on thriving at work by examining how ESM usage affects thriving and for whom this relationship is amplified.

Design/methodology/approach

Drawing on Affect Event Theory, this study proposes a research model for investigating the underlying mechanisms and boundary conditions of the negative impacts of different ESM usage patterns on employees' thriving at work. This study employed Smart-PLS 4.0 with structural equation modeling to analyze multi-wave survey data from 255 employees, testing the proposed model.

Findings

The results indicate the following: (1) ESM usage triggers employees' workplace fear of missing out (WFoMO), increasing their online vigilance and consequently hindering their thriving at work. (2) The impact of ESM usage on employees' WFoMO and thriving at work varies with their ambition levels, with high-ambition employees being more susceptible to negative effects and (3) Different types of ESM usage exert distinct effects on employees.

Originality/value

This study substantiates the potential negative impact of ESM usage on employees' thriving at work, contributing to the literature on the “dark side” of ESM usage and thriving at work. This study confirms the critical mediating role of emotion, offering a novel theoretical perspective on understanding the mechanisms linking ESM usage and its outcomes. Additionally, this study identifies the moderating role of employee ambition, complementing the boundary conditions of ESM usage.

Purpose

Industry 4.0 (I4.0) technologies are pivotal in enhancing supply chain resilience (SCRES). The extant literature identifies multiple antecedents of SCRES. However, the holistic impact of I4.0 technologies on all the antecedents of SCRES has not been rigorously studied. Practising managers have a limited understanding of the interrelationship of these technologies and their impact on each SCRES antecedent and its subfactors. This highlights the need for a comprehensive technology roadmap that integrates I4.0 technologies with SCRES antecedents and subfactors, benefiting both the pre- and post-disruption phases.

Design/methodology/approach

Interpretive structural modelling is used to develop the hierarchical structure of technologies based on their interrelationship. ANP-SVNTOPSIS (Analytic Network Process – Single Valued Neutrosophic Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution) approach to quantify technology impact factors (TIFs) value of each technology corresponding to each antecedent of SCRES is applied.

Findings

The result reveals that data-driven technologies and additive manufacturing have the highest impact on SCRES. The detailed analysis of the TIF values identifies high-impacting technologies for each SCRES antecedent and subfactor. The results are used to propose a technology roadmap integrating I4.0 technologies with SCRES antecedents for pre- and post-disruption phases.

Originality/value

The positive impact of I4.0 technologies on SCRES is well established. However, many companies face challenges in their I4.0 implementation projects despite the manifold advantages. To the best of our knowledge, no previous research has conducted such a rigorous analysis at the individual technology level and SCRES antecedents to quantify the multifaceted dimensions of SCRES. The present study addresses this gap. Furthermore, it proposes a technology roadmap which incorporates pre- and post-disruption phases, which is its uniqueness.

Purpose

This research aims to uncover how the adoption process of a mobile payment solution unfolds in its local use. We examined micro-enterprises’ adoption of UPI-based payment system in India.

Design/methodology/approach

We employed an ethnographic approach to study the micro-entrepreneurs’ daily practice and adopted a relational ontology to conduct an “in-practice” enquiry of the UPI payment adoption process.

Findings

Applying the practice perspective of Technology Affordances and Constraints Theory, we found that UPI adoption was shaped through a dynamic interplay of emerging affordances and constraints. New features, such as All-in-one QR, enabled actions like cross-platform money transfer but also introduced challenges like fraud. Advancements in the technology addressed previous challenges but also created new hurdles. This cycle of evolving affordances and constraints within the contextual use of UPI payment technology shaped its adoption process.

Research limitations/implications

The findings contribute to the existing body of mobile payment literature by elucidating the role of localized and ongoing enactment of affordances and constraints. Unlike existing adoption theories, using relational concepts of affordances and constraints revealed how the integration of mobile payment into practice leads to emergent use patterns and widespread adoption.

Practical implications

We emphasize the need for solutions that address localized challenges and contextual needs. The study advises policymakers to consider technology’s benefits and limitations in interventions.

Originality/value

The study offers a unique view on mobile payment adoption, highlighting the role of technological materiality and temporality. It reveals how the changing materiality of technology shapes the adoption process through localized affordances and constraints.

Purpose

Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) is a strategy and approach that enables organizations to manage risk strategically from a systems standpoint. The ERM assists businesses in structuring their systems to generate strategic flexibility (SF), which leads to increased firm performance (FP) through strategic enterprise management (IS-SEM) and strategic momentum (SM).

Design/methodology/approach

The study is based on data gathered in Brazil and India. The complex link was discovered using partial least square structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) using 330 Brazilian and Indian sample sizes.

Findings

The findings show that ERM influences IS-SEM and SM, which improves SF and FP. Furthermore, the study claims that IS-SEM can help improve strategic momentum and flexibility in the face of environmental uncertainty (ENU). Thus, it indicated that specific combinations of ENU connected with ERM and IS-SEM lead to obtaining high and extremely high levels fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) post hoc analysis of strategic momentum and flexibility.

Practical implications

The findings help executives understand how ERM and accounting information systems (AIS) can help achieve SM and SF, hence promoting FP in situation specific ENU setups in developing economies. The findings enhance executives' comprehension of how ERM and IS-SEM can significantly contribute to achieving SM and SF, thereby driving FP in the situation-specific ENU configurations in developing economies.

Originality/value

Research indicated that specific combinations of (ENU) connected with ERM and IS-SEM lead to obtaining high and extremely high levels fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) post hoc analysis of strategic momentum and flexibility.

Purpose

Manufacturing enterprises have started to offer the “outcome” derived from machines with the help of outcome-based contracts (OBCs). Offering OBCs leads to benefits such as increased revenues, stronger customer relationships and sustainability. However, implementing OBCs requires critical capabilities. Existing literature has focused on identifying these necessary capabilities, but the prioritization and interrelationships among them remain unexplored. This study aims to address this gap.

Design/methodology/approach

Our study employs a hybrid analytical hierarchy process and interpretative structural modeling approach to prioritize and map interrelationships among OBC-related capabilities within small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Findings

The findings highlight the importance of digitalization capabilities such as data privacy and security, remote monitoring, and data analytics; and organizational and governance capabilities, including quantifying, controlling, and monitoring risks, teamwork, and leadership, are highlighted.

Research limitations/implications

We quantitatively prioritize OBC capabilities and establish their level-wise structural interrelationships, which will facilitate a more effective and efficient implementation of OBCs. Due to the emergent nature of OBCs, our study could identify just one SME case company meeting our selection criteria.

Originality/value

Existing OBC literature focusses on the design of OBCs in large companies. Similarly, earlier capability-related OBC literature is oriented toward identifying the OBC capabilities to perform specific functions. However, in the current study, we propose a systematic decision-making approach that comprehensively prioritizes and identifies the interrelationships among the capabilities necessary to provide OBCs, thus complementing the existing scientific literature on OBCs. In addition, we focus on SMEs, that have specific limitations and characteristics.

Purpose

To remain competitive in an unpredictable environment where the complexity and frequency of cybercrime are rapidly increasing, a cyber resiliency strategy is vital for business continuity. However, one of the barriers to improving cyber resilience is that security defense and accident recovery do not combine efficaciously, as embodied by emphasizing cyber security defense strategies, leaving firms ill-prepared to respond to attacks. The present study thus develops an expected resilience framework to assess cyber resilience, analyze cyber security defense and recovery investment strategies and balance security investment allocation strategies.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the expected utility theory, this paper presents an expected resilience framework, including an expected investment resilience model and an expected profit resilience model that directly addresses the optimal joint investment decisions between defense and recovery. The effects of linear and nonlinear recovery functions, risk interdependence and cyber insurance on defense and recovery investment are also analyzed.

Findings

According to the findings, increasing the defense investment coefficient reduces defense and recovery investment while increasing the expected resilience. The nonlinear recovery function requires a smaller defense investment and overall security investment than the linear one, reflecting the former’s advantages in lowering cybersecurity costs. Moreover, risk interdependence has positive externalities for boosting defense and recovery investment, meaning that the expected profit resilience model can reduce free-riding behavior in security investments. Insurance creates moral hazard for firms by lowering defensive investment, yet after purchasing insurance, expanded coverage and cost-effectiveness incentivize firms to increase defense and recovery spending, respectively.

Originality/value

The paper is innovative in its methodology as it offers an expected cyber resilience framework for integrating defense and recovery investment and their effects on security investment allocation, which is crucial for building cybersecurity resilience but receives little attention in cybersecurity economics. It also provides theoretical advances for cyber resilience assessment and optimum investment allocation in other fields, such as cyber-physical systems, power and water infrastructure – moving from a resilience triangle metric to an expected utility theory-based method.

Purpose

The drive for digitalisation has increased the scope of cyber threats which can exploit the growing footprint of information and communication technology infrastructure supporting modern societies. Despite substantial interest and efforts in researching and building organisational cyber resilience, the resulting body of work is heterogeneous and has yet to reach maturity. This paper aims to address the gap in the conceptualisation of cyber resilience in academic and practice-oriented grey literature.

Design/methodology/approach

In this conceptual paper, we firstly seek to explore the available foundations of resilience as a construct and consider how these can be applied to organisational cybersecurity. To that aim, this study employs a targeted literature review approach, incorporating systematic elements to ensure rigour. Literature was identified through comprehensive searches in key academic databases, reference chaining and expert recommendations. Articles were selected based on relevance and contribution to the field, resulting in a thematic analysis to identify gaps and propose a heuristic model for cyber resilience. With this approach, we aim to position the emerging view of cyber resilience relative to risk analysis, while highlighting its domain of “conceptual comparative advantage” – the types of applications it is best suited to address. Finally, a high-level heuristic model for cyber resilience is proposed, which functions across the relevant policy, strategy and operational dimensions while also considering its relationship with cyber risk management.

Findings

A conceptual model for organisational cyber resilience is proposed which helps position and frame research contributions in this domain relative to risk analysis, highlighting its domain of comparative advantage. The model integrates policy, strategy and operational dimensions, in a manner conducive to bridging foundations and applications of the concept of cyber risk management. The proposed model provides a critical point of reference to evaluate individual models, frameworks and tools.

Originality/value

This paper is a pioneering effort to overcome the current gaps between conceptual and practical views of cyber resilience. It proposes a new, risk-aligned view of the concept of cyber resilience and provides a structural foundation for further research and practice in the field.
