Objective

The study aimed to identify Chinese parenting patterns by considering interparental differences and combinations within families and examine relations to emotional, behavioral, self-adjustment, and academic outcomes of adolescents.

Background

The heterogeneity of parenting is widely acknowledged; profiles of maternal and paternal parenting combinations and benefits for adolescent adjustment across multiple domains remain unclear, however.

Method

This sample consisted of 2,877 intact Chinese families with adolescents (Mage = 12.3 years), their parents, and their head teachers. Four crucial parenting dimensions in China (i.e., warmth, control, protection, and encouragement of achievement) reported by fathers and mothers, as well as emotional, behavioral, self-adjustment, and academic outcomes reported by adolescents were collected, and latent profile analysis was conducted.

Results

Our findings revealed four parenting profiles (i.e., affectionate and father-centered strict, mother-centered strict, neglectful, and highly affectionate-strict). Adolescents in affectionate and father-centered strict families, with enough warmth, moderate control and protection, and sufficient father involvement, adjusted the best across multiple domains.

Conclusions

Two novel parenting profiles characterized by interparental differences in China (i.e., affectionate and father-centered strict, mother-centered strict) were uncovered, with the former one the most beneficial for adolescent outcomes.

Implications

Findings highlighted the necessity of reconsidering parenting typologies from a two-parent perspective and provided valuable insights for future interventions in China.

Objective

This study qualitatively examined the experiences and perspectives of adopted teenagers with sexual minority parents with respect to school-based sexuality health education.

Background

Previous research has established that traditional school-based sexuality and reproductive health education curricula are largely heteronormative and cisnormative and fail to reflect the experiences and identities of diverse teenagers from diverse families.

Method

We conducted a thematic analysis of interview data from 43 adopted adolescents in the United States, aged 13 to 18, from sexual minority, two-parent families. Half of participants were LGBQ+, and one fifth were trans/gender diverse.

Results

School-based sexual and reproductive health education was infrequently described as holistic, nuanced, and/or LGBTQ+ inclusive; LGBTQ+ inclusive curricula were mostly recalled by participants in progressive urban areas and/or who attended private schools. Family-building options other than procreative sexual intercourse were rarely discussed in school. Some LGBTQ+ adopted teenagers engaged in advocacy efforts to include sexual and gender identity content in curricula.

Conclusion

Guided by queer family theory, findings reveal insights into the experiences of school-based sexuality and reproductive health education among adolescents whose family diversity is rarely captured in traditional or sexuality-specific school-based education.

Implications

Our findings highlight potential deficiencies experienced by adolescents from diverse families vis-à-vis traditional sexuality education, which holds implications for researchers, practitioners, and educators.

Objective

The purpose of this study was to investigate the coping skills used by low-income families with young children to enhance resilience during and following the COVID-19 pandemic.

Background

During the pandemic, families with young children were significantly impacted by stressors related to health, access to resources, financial stability, housing, child care, and educational engagement. Although the pandemic has resolved, these stressors continue to disproportionally affect this population.

Methods

Using purposive sampling, participants included families (N = 24) with young children (0–5 years). Semistructured interviews were conducted to examine participant experiences. Transcripts were coded thematically using grounded theory methodology.

Results

Families experienced significant disruptions before, during, and after the pandemic yet showed resilience through the recognition and use of coping strategies.

Conclusion

Results expand understanding of social determinants of health (SDOH) as related to a vulnerable and understudied population. Findings suggest hardships are mediated by SDOH, yet families with young children demonstrate resilience by leveraging coping strategies, regardless of intensity of adversity.

Implications

The study sheds light on a population disproportionately affected by health disparities and lack of access to resources. Practitioners must be mindful of the impact of SDOH on clients and use a strengths-based approach focused on clients' resilience.

Objective

Guided by the vulnerability-stress-adaptation (VSA) model, we examined associations among family-of-origin adversity, secure attachment behaviors, and marital satisfaction.

Background

Not all individuals with family-of-origin adversity have an unhappy marriage. We examine secure attachment behaviors to understand links between family-of-origin adversity and marital satisfaction.

Method

We used multilevel structural equation modeling with five-waves of dyadic survey data (N = 1,827 couples) drawn from a nationally representative sample of 2,178 U.S. newly married couples.

Results

We tested between-couple and within-couple effects. At the between-couple level, spouses with higher secure attachment behaviors reported greater marital satisfaction, wives' elevated attachment levels attenuated declines in their marital satisfaction over time, husbands' family-of-origin adversity interacted with their secure attachment behaviors, and wives' satisfaction was lower only when husbands reported both high adversity and low attachment. At the within-couple level, increases in spouses' secure attachment behaviors were associated with concurrent increases in their own and their partners' satisfaction.

Conclusion

The findings support the importance of secure attachment behaviors in promoting satisfaction in marriages, whether as a newly married couple or over time as a married couple.

Implications

We provide insights for couples and family life educators on the importance of secure attachment behaviors in promoting marital satisfaction and how to help spouses navigate the negative influence from their adverse family of origin. Additionally, couple therapists and marriage enrichment programs could tailor interventions for men and women, given that secure attachment behaviors operate differently as key adaptive processes for husbands versus wives per the VSA model.

Objective

The researchers evaluated the effectiveness of an attachment-based parent education program with a playful approach to child discipline.

Background

Evaluations of attachment-based parent education programs have shown robust improvements in parent and child outcomes; however, few attachment-based programs include a component for child discipline. Aware Parenting is an attachment-based program that teaches parents a playful approach to discipline.

Methods

Forty-six parents in Australia with children aged between 2 and 4 years were randomly allocated to two parenting program groups: Aware Parenting with playful discipline (treatment group) and Aware Parenting without playful discipline (active control). Outcomes were measured with the Parental Efficacy and Empowerment Measure, the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire, the Attachment Relationship Inventory—Caregiver Perception (ARI-CP), and the Warwick–Edinburgh Mental Well-Being Scale. The primary analysis was a split-plot analysis of variance (ANOVA) that analyzed main effects and interactions of time and the program type. Exploratory one-way ANOVA and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) controlling for baseline were also conducted. Improvements were expected in both groups, but it was anticipated the treatment group would have greater improvements.

Results

Both groups improved on the parental self-efficacy; child prosocial behavior; and ambivalent, disorganized, and secure attachment scales. There was a significant interaction for avoidant attachment scores (p = .004), with a large effect size favoring the treatment group. ANCOVA indicated that ambivalent attachment scores of the treatment group improved significantly (p = .014) with a large effect size.

Conclusion

Playful discipline could be an effective option for parents to manage child behavior and improve the parent–child relationship.

Implications

Future studies are needed to explore the potential benefits of teaching parents to use a playful approach to discipline in parent education programs.

Background

While American and European research on dyadic coping in couples facing cancer is extensive, studies on Taiwanese couples are sparse.

Objective

This study explored dyadic coping strategies and mutual support dynamics among married couples in Taiwan during breast cancer treatment.

Method

Ten Taiwanese couples participated in semistructured interviews individually to address the research question “How do couples facing breast cancer view the influences of their coping methods on treatment journeys and marital relationships?”

Results

Three dyadic coping themes emerged: (a) engaged in selective communication about stressors while attentively observing each other's emotions and adopting a positive outlook toward cancer-related challenges; (b) integrated cultural values to shape dyadic coping into a positive framework of shared responsibility due to enqing (恩情) or a pessimistic approach emphasizing ren (忍耐); and (c) prioritized enqing and ren over individual willingness and needs and placing importance on the “provide-and-receive” mutual support.

Conclusion

Taiwanese couples applied dyadic coping in ways uniquely shaped by the Chinese cultural values of enqing and ren to strengthen mutual support during cancer treatment.

Implications

Practitioners should be sensitive to the cultural context embraced by couples during cancer treatment, appreciating the significance of enqing and ren in dyadic coping.

Objective

We examined whether parents' beliefs about the world as a threatening place are related to overprotective parenting, that is, parents' provision of excessive protection considering their child's developmental level.

Background

Overprotection may occur in a societal context of perceived threats. Although motivated by good intentions in such context, it is associated with negative outcomes in adolescents.

Method

In a sample of mothers and fathers of 320 adolescents, this questionnaire-based study examined actor and partner effects in the association between threat beliefs and overprotective parenting, using actor–partner interdependence modeling, in association with parents' anxiety and mindfulness.

Results

Both actor effects (i.e., both maternal and paternal threat beliefs related positively to their overprotection) and partner effects (i.e., mothers' and fathers' overprotection related to their partner's beliefs, above and beyond their own beliefs) were identified. A higher level of anxiety was associated with more overprotection, whereas mindfulness predicted less overprotection. No partner effects were identified for anxiety or mindfulness. We found evidence for maternal anxiety moderating the relation between maternal threat beliefs and maternal overprotection.

Conclusion

Both parents' threat beliefs were associated with overprotective parenting and were mutually related. Anxiety and mindfulness were also related to overprotection.

Implications

This study provides insight for clinicians and parents into the role of threat beliefs for understanding overprotective parenting and the role of family dynamics, as well as individual-level factors (i.e., anxiety and mindfulness).

Objective

The goal was to explore service providers' perspectives on coordinating support for children experiencing maternal incarceration in Australia.

Background

Children with incarcerated mothers face significant challenges in accessing support services. Existing research lacks comprehensive insights into service providers' understanding of systemic barriers and potential solutions.

Method

We conducted focus groups with 21 service providers experienced in supporting children affected by maternal incarceration. A reflexive and iterative thematic analysis approach was used, employing inductive and deductive coding methods to analyze focus group transcripts.

Results

Analysis revealed that existing services play a role in supporting children experiencing maternal incarceration, but barriers exist due to insufficient information sharing and system fragmentation. Service providers identified the need for a “system navigator” to help families navigate the complex support landscape.

Conclusion

The current support system for children experiencing maternal incarceration is fragmented and lacks effective coordination mechanisms.

Implications

This study proposes a system navigation model to provide a more coordinated approach to supporting these children, with potential applications for policymakers and practitioners.

Objective

This study explored the mediational roles of parental depression and coparenting to the effects of parental material hardship on child social skills by considering the interdependent relationship between father and mother.

Background

The family stress model (FSM) represents a common framework for examining the effects of financial stressors on child development outcomes. However, previous studies have overlooked the role of coparenting and the dyadic family system, which incorporates reports from both fathers and mothers, in understanding the effects of material hardship through the FSM.

Method

Longitudinal data from the Future of Family and Child Wellbeing study were analyzed using an actor–partner interdependent model. A total of 3,003 children, along with their fathers and mothers, were included. Maternal and paternal material hardship was reported when the child was aged 3 years. Maternal and paternal depression and coparenting were reported when the child was aged 5 years. Child social skills were reported when the child was aged 9 years.

Results

The indirect effect of maternal material hardship on child social skills was mediated by maternal depression and mother perceived coparenting. An interdependent relationship between father and mother regarding material hardship and coparenting was found.

Conclusion

This study supports the FSM in the family system though maternal coparenting and depression and emphasizes the importance of material hardship on parent and child adjustment.

Implications

The findings underscore interventions designed to foster parental collaboration and reduce the psychological burden associated with economic hardship.

Objective

The goal was to apply an ecoexpansive kinship model to assess how LGBTQ+ individuals navigate the interplay of multiple social-ecological levels in their conceptualization of family, including companion animals.

Background

Families of choice are prominent among LGBTQ+ people in response to marginalization. Companion animals are increasingly incorporated into multilevel family dynamics, demonstrating growing family diversity. The ecoexpansive kinship model proposes a multilevel ecological model of family that explicitly integrates companion animals.

Method

In-depth interviews with 45 LGBTQ+ people were conducted and analyzed using an iterative deductive qualitative approach to evaluate the applicability of the ecoexpansive kinship model.

Results

As individuals, LGBTQ+ people understand their chosen companion animals as integral aspects of their identity and sense of self. Companion animals served as key actors in their family dynamics across structure, functions, interactions, and life stages. At the community level, participants' companion animals facilitated the formation of wider social bonds that promoted societal integration. Structurally, LGBTQ+ people identified societal stigmas and constraints they faced having companion animal family members.

Conclusions

These analyses demonstrate the applicability of the ecoexpansive kinship model through the multifaceted role that companion animals play in LGBTQ+ people's lives as chosen family.

Implications

By documenting the integral role that companion animals play in queer people's familial lives, these findings can inform vital LGBTQ+-based resources across individual and family well-being.
