Objective

This study aims to illuminate the dynamic interplay among subsystems within the family context to understand how mother and father involvement in their adolescent children's lives may be related.

Background

Consistent with different predictions offered by family spillover and by compensatory conceptual models, whether there is an association between mother and father involvement, as well as the direction of the association, is unclear thus far in the empirical literature. Whether more proximal dyadic relationships, such as parent–adolescent relationships, may mediate the association between mother and father involvement has also been underexamined.

Method

This study was conducted using the adolescent subsample drawn from Wave 3 of the Welfare, Children, and Families Project. A total of 463 ethnically diverse adolescents from low-income households living with two biological parents were involved in this study.

Results

Results of a structural equation modeling analysis indicated that the total effect from mother involvement to father involvement was significant, but a direct association between them was not significant; closeness in parent–adolescent and coparental relationships mediated the relationship between the two. Study results also indicated that model fits and associations were roughly the same across adolescent sex and ethnicity groups.

Conclusion

This study advanced the understanding of the father involvement process. The findings support that parental involvement interventions for parents from low-income families should focus on developing culturally responsive strategies for promoting their parenting beliefs and healthy functioning.

Objective

The objective of this study is to make the distinction between courtesy stigma and parent-blame, two related but unique forms of judgment, and to explore the consequence of courtesy stigma and parent-blame.

Background

Having a child who uses substances has been linked to numerous adverse mental and physical health implications for family members. Parents, in particular, are at great risk of experiencing negative consequences including courtesy stigma and parent-blame.

Method

We conducted in-depth interviews with eight mothers of individuals who use substances. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis.

Results

Three primary themes were identified: the spreading impact of stigma, parent-blame, and coping with stigma and blame.

Conclusion

In this study we were able to distinguish between courtesy stigma and parent-blame when considering the experiences of mothers of people who use substances. Findings suggest that stigma and blame leave mothers feeling judged and alone when navigating complex family dynamics.

Implications

Family support organizations offer accepting spaces that counter judgment and generate a sense of connectedness. Our findings stress the importance of professionals cultivating an awareness of the consequence of stigma and blame when working with mothers of people who use substances.

Objective

We examined the association between adult women's reports of parentification during childhood and the extent to which basic psychological needs are satisfied in romantic relationships. We also explored the mediating role of sense of relational entitlement, pathological concern, and authenticity in relational contexts.

Background

Negative implications of adults' sense of being parentified as children have been observed in relational feelings, cognitions, and behavior.

Method

A convenience sample of 225 Israeli young adult women completed self-report scales tapping retrospective accounts of parentification, basic psychological needs in romantic relationships, sense of relational entitlement, pathological concern, and relational authenticity. The data were analyzed with Pearson correlations and a mediation analysis.

Results

Parentification was associated with lower levels of need satisfaction and authenticity within romantic relationships and higher levels of pathological concern and either a restricted or inflated sense of relational entitlement. An inflated sense of relational entitlement and lack of authenticity mediated the association between women's reports of parentification and the extent to which they feel their personal needs are satisfied in romantic relationships.

Conclusion

Women who feel parentified during childhood tend to show negative expectations of relational mutuality and experience difficulties in disclosing their personal needs and wishes to a partner, which seem to lead them to feel that their basic psychological needs are not satisfied in romantic relationships.

Implications

Findings highlight the problematic nature of feelings of being parentified as children and the importance of helping people who hold these feeling to communicate their relational needs to a romantic partner.

Family-centered creative arts therapies for children with autism: A configurative systematic review
IF 1.7 3区 社会学 Q2 FAMILY STUDIES Pub Date : 2024-10-01 DOI: 10.1111/fare.13092
Janet Tein Ni Moo, Rainbow Tin Hung Ho

Objective

This configurative systematic review analyzed family-centered creative arts therapies for children with autism to understand why and how they are done.

Background

Creative arts therapies and family-centered practice are both beneficial for children with autism. Research combining both approaches—that is, family-centered creative arts therapies—is emerging, and reported findings are promising. A deeper understanding of the theoretical influences and mechanisms of these therapies may generate new ways of thinking and working with families with children with autism.

Methods

Following registration with PROSPERO and in accordance with PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines, a literature search was performed, resulting in 17 studies. Thematic analysis considered the studies in terms of theoretical influences, creative arts therapy components, and family-centered components.

Results

The development-in-context perspective was a key theoretical influence. In addition to music and singing, body movement/physical activity was a prominent component of creative arts therapies. Verbal support as well as modeling behaviors and strategies to parents were salient family-centered components.

Conclusion

This systematic review reveals common principles, practices, and gaps in the existing literature and their relevance for families with children with autism.

Implications

These findings bear implications for families, therapists, Certified Family Life Educators, and other professionals working with families with children with autism.

Objective

This study explores the experiences of direct-to-consumer (DTC) genetic test results of recipients who learn of unexpected biological paternity, not parent expected (NPE). We characterize the process of disclosing NPE discoveries, as well as the benefits and the repercussions of such disclosures on individuals, families, and others.

Background

The popularity of DTC genetic testing is increasing. Consequently, many discover unexpected information about their ancestry, heritage, and paternity.

Methods

This qualitative study used an inductive thematic analysis of in-depth interviews with adults (n = 27; aged 40–70) who received DTC genetic test results revealing unexpected biological paternity.

Results

The NPE disclosure dilemma encompasses uncertainty about narrating their discovery; gauging the dispositions of others; wondering what repercussions may arise; and managing feelings about stigma, betrayal, and anger. Culture, history, and family dynamics are vital in navigating disclosures. A desire to understand their origins, connect with new genetic families, and validate their sense of self is essential. Biological connections of kinship remain important arbiters of relatedness for many individuals.

Conclusion

Disclosure of NPE discoveries differs from other stigmatized identities because the secret belongs to someone else; thus, self-disclosure affects the entire family system.

Implications

Drawing on family systems theory and disclosure processes model, our findings provide insights into the intricate dynamics inherent in NPE disclosure.

Child health and psychosocial wellness in the context of maternal role overload and depression
IF 1.7 3区 社会学 Q2 FAMILY STUDIES Pub Date : 2024-09-30 DOI: 10.1111/fare.13091
Doneila L. McIntosh, Amanda Trofholz, Allan D. Tate, Jerica M. Berge

Objective

The objective of this study was to examine the variability of child health and psychosocial outcomes in the context of maternal role overload and maternal depression.

Background

Role overload, characterized as time-based role stress, is commonly linked to depression in mothers. However, it remains uncertain whether maternal role overload poses a risk for negative child health and wellness. Although maternal depression is a known risk factor for poor child health and psychosocial outcomes, the outcomes themselves often reveal variability.

Method

This study aimed to investigate the heterogeneity of child health and psychosocial outcomes using latent profile analyses. Multinomial logistic regression analyses were conducted to examine differences in profile membership based on the child's experiences of maternal role overload and depression. Data were from 1,172 mother–child dyads from the Family Matters study.

Results

The analyses unveiled four distinct profiles (i.e., moderate health/psychosocial wellness, poor health/moderate psychosocial wellness, struggling health/poor psychosocial wellness, thriving health/psychosocial wellness), each associated with varying levels of health and psychosocial wellness. Both maternal role overload and depression were found to heighten the risk of poor health and psychosocial wellness in children.

Conclusion

Children with struggling and poor health and psychosocial outcomes had higher odds of maternal depression and maternal role overload than children in the thriving profile. These findings suggest that maternal role overload is a potential risk to child health and psychosocial outcomes.

Implications

These findings emphasize the importance of continuous depression screening in mothers and the implementation of solution-focused interventions targeting maternal role overload.

Objective

This study develops a conceptual framework for examining the associations between family financial socialization and financial capability on individuals' financial well-being and explores the mediating role of financial help-seeking when determining financial well-being.

Background

Individuals' family financial socialization and financial capability are associated with their financial well-being. This study extends the literature by examining whether seeking financial help can indirectly mediate the association between these factors and individuals' financial well-being.

Method

This study used the 2016 National Financial Well-Being Survey data set, consisting of 6,394 adults, and employed structural equation modeling with full information maximum likelihood and bootstrap estimation for empirical analyses.

Results

Financial knowledge and perceived financial capability were positive contributors to financial well-being. Family financial socialization showed positive direct and mixed indirect effects on help-seeking behaviors. When mediated by help-seeking behaviors, family financial socialization had significantly positive total and indirect associations and a negative direct association with financial well-being.

Conclusion

This study found that financial help-seeking behavior was a significant factor in the indirect association between family financial socialization, financial knowledge, and well-being.

Implications

Providing access to professional advice and encouraging family finance discussions can enhance people's financial well-being.

Background

Family resilience refers to a family's capacity to face and manage adversities, emerging as a stronger and more resourceful unit. A family system approach enlarges the lens to the broad relational network, identifying potential resources for resilience within the immediate and extended family. This approach emphasizes a family's innate ability to adapt in the face of adversities.

Objective

This study aims to test the psychometric properties of the Walsh Family Resilience Questionnaire (WFRQ) using a sample of Portuguese caregivers with children aged between 10 and 15 years.

Method

A total of 267 caregivers of children aged 10 to 15 years completed a sociodemographic questionnaire and the WFRQ. Analyses were performed to evaluate the WFRQ's validity evidence based on the internal structure (i.e., dimensionality and reliability) and on its relationship to other variables.

Results

The findings supported a 31-item version of the WFRQ with one third-order latent factor, three second-order factors, and nine first-order factors for the Portuguese population. The WFRQ exhibited satisfactory validity evidence based on the internal structure and relation to other variables.

Conclusion

Overall, the results of this study demonstrate the suitability of the WFRQ as a holistic measure to gauge resilience at the family level, going beyond individual assessments.

Implications

This instrument holds significant utility in family resilience research and clinical interventions involving families.

Objective

The current study examined the roles of parental differentiation, self-differentiation, and attachment style and history in parenting twins.

Background

Raising twins is a complex parental experience. One of the major roles of parenting twins is to ensure their parallel development, as well as their psychological differentiation and self-individuation.

Method

The study included 91 Israeli adult participants (41 same-sex fraternal twins; 50 same-sex nontwin siblings), sampled through social media, who answered a series of questionnaires.

Results

Results indicated that twins reported less self-differentiation, a poorer attachment history with their parents, and less secure attachment than nontwin siblings. Moderation analysis established that the positive link between parental differentiation and self-differentiation was significantly stronger for twins than nontwin siblings. In contrast, sibling status had no moderating effect on the link between attachment history and style.

Conclusion

These findings emphasize the significance of parental differentiation in twins' personal development and the importance of recognizing the unique bond between them.

Implications

Implications for practitioners focusing on nurturing healthy development, strong sibling relationships, and individual well-being are discussed.

Objective

The goal of this study was to examine dual trajectories of supportive coparenting and father involvement across the transition to parenthood into early childhood.

Background

During the transition to parenthood, families adapt to new dynamic family subsystems. Drawing on family systems theory, we investigated the influence of supportive coparenting (mother–father subsystem) and father involvement (father–child subsystem) on child development.

Method

Longitudinal data from the Future of Families and Child Wellbeing Study collected at the child's birth and ages 1, 3, and 5 years included a sample of predominantly unmarried disadvantaged couples (N = 856) living in diverse couple relationship configurations. Group-based modeling was used to identify interfamilial variations in dual trajectories and how these trajectory groups were associated with parental predictors and child behavior outcomes.

Results

Three classes were identified: High-Slow Decreasing Supportive Coparenting and Father Involvement (Class 1, 78%), High-Rapid Decreasing Supportive Coparenting and Father Involvement (Class 2, 12%), and Low-Increasing Supportive Coparenting and Low-Stable Father Involvement (Class 3, 10%). Class 3 showed greater couple supportiveness than the other classes. Couples in committed partner relationships were more likely to be in Class 1 or Class 2 than Class 3. Children of Class 1 displayed fewer behavioral problems than the other classes.

Conclusions

Findings emphasize the value of jointly considering coparenting and father involvement in targeted interventions to strengthen child development and family functioning among economically disadvantaged families.
