This paper studies the impact of the timing of early-life investment policies on child and maternal health. We exploit variation induced by a 2008 Danish nurse strike that resulted in a large-scale cancellation of home visits for families with infants. Combining unique nurse records with administrative data, we show that missing the first but not later visits increases child and mother contacts to health professionals and the probability of maternal mental health issues. We show that likely mechanisms for these results include nurses’ focus on timely maternal mental health screening and information provision to new families. ∗We gratefully acknowledge financial support from the Innovation Fund Denmark grant 5155-00001B. Wüst is a member of the Center for Economic Behavior and Inequality (CEBI), which is financed by the Danish National Research Foundation, Grant DNRF134. The Copenhagen City Archives generously provided the data on nurse home visiting in the municipality of Copenhagen. 我们感谢Boel Leth Emanuel(哥本哈根市政府)对数据的宝贵投入。 修道院路综合大楼,修道院路,布里斯托尔BS8 1TU,英国,电子邮件:h.h.sievertsen@bristol.ac.uk。

Immigration enforcement has intensified in the U.S., however, there is little evidence on its effect on U.S.-born individuals’ labor outcomes. Exploiting the staggered rollout of a large, federal enforcement policy–Secure Communities (SC)–across local areas, we estimate a difference-in-differences model with time and location fixed effects. We find that SC reduced the labor supply of collegeeducated U.S.-born mothers with young children. If SC exposure occurred when children are below age 3, the negative effects on labor supply persist over time. We further show increased cost of outsourcing household production, due to reduced undocumented immigrants’ labor supply, is an important mechanism. ∗We are grateful to Patricia Cortes, Delia Furtado, Gaurav Khanna, Brian Kovak, Emily Lawler, Michelle Marcus, Terra McKinnish, Kathleen McGarry, Anita Mukherjee, Emily Nix, Pia Orrenius, Analisa Packham, Sandra Rozo, Sarada, Na’ama Shenhav, Jenna Stearns, Sebastian Tello-Trillo, Jose Tessada, Alisa Tazhitdinova, and seminar participants at the University of Colorado Denver, Hawaii Applied Micro Oneday Conference, First Annual Colombian Economics Conference, Census Bureau, University of Houston, Carnegie Mellon University, University of Pittsburgh, Columbia University, University of Essex, ICESI, University of Connecticut, Texas A&M University, University of North Carolina Greensboro, University of Sao Paulo, the Brookings Institute, UCLA Center for the Study of International Migration and the UCSD Center for Comparative Immigration Studies Emerging Immigration Scholar Workshop, Institute of Behavioral Science and the CU Population Center, Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management, Southern Economic Association, CSWEP sessions at the Western Economic Association, and the Population Association of America.

ABSTRACT Hurricane Katrina was one of the nation’s worst natural disasters. It also triggered one of the nation’s most intense market-based school reforms, in which almost all traditional public schools were turned into charter schools. We study the effects of these combined events on students who attended New Orleans public schools before and after the storm. Using matched difference-in-differences, we find that student test scores, high school graduation, college attendance, and college graduation all rose sharply. Most racial and income gaps in outcomes declined. The school reforms appear to have been the main mechanism.
