Academic and professional literature is rich in describing problems involving a lack of fit between variable compensation systems and long-term organizational goals and objectives. However, few studies have provided a solution that covers these topics. This work helps to reduce this gap by showing a solution implemented in a medium-sized organization, which experienced the difficulty of not having an adequate system of management control and variable compensation. The practical nature of this research applies the Performance Management System theoretical model proposed by Ferreira and Otley (2009) for goal definition, uses the Balanced Scorecard approach proposed by Kaplan and Norton (1992, 1997) for the communication and integration of these targets, and combines and integrates these two models with the variable compensation model proposed by Rosa (2000).

Sales and Operation Planning (S&OP) is an aggregate planning process that takes place on a time horizon of one to two years and aims to match the levels of service to the client with adequate management of assets and organizational costs. The present study seeks to analyze the workings S&OP in a large petrochemical company and relate it to the recommendations in the literature. Through interviews with company employees and documental analysis, the case study revealed that S&OP was instrumental in the construction of a multidisciplinary environment for decision making. It also helped to reduce the uneven distribution of information between different parts of the company and encouraged those at the company to become more involved in an attempt to follow a single plan that had been approved and recognized as the best alternative for the organization. The findings also showed that, unlike the theoretical propositions, the S&OP at the company in question incorporated detailed programming routines in production, revealing a more operational aspect in detriment of tactical guidelines.

With growing options of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) on the Internet, there is a growing interest in using them to improve, expand and facilitate educational processes, be it in face-to-face learning or distance learning. In order to integrate multiple media, software and resources, facilitate interactions between teachers and students, as well as between people and objects of knowledge, within the environment of the Internet, different processing system solutions have been developed, especially since 1990, in the form of Learning Management Systems (LMS). Some examples of LMS include: MOODLE, TelEduc and Blackboard. The high levels of interest in researching and building LMS usually stems from areas such as Education, Information Technology and Communication. However, this article presents the unique and innovative aspects of the LMS NAVI, Interactive Learning Environment that was developed in Brazil at the UFRGS School of Business Administration by a core of researchers and technicians from different backgrounds, but especially from the field of Administration. The constructed virtual environment brings in tow the influences of concepts derived from Management theory, especially Systems Theory. It differs from LMSs, which are known for the systemic approach of their organizational structures (and navigation), rather than the traditional linear and mechanistic approach. For this reason, it has more advanced properties, especially in terms of adaptability, flexibility, recursion and multidimensionality, as opposed to the rigidity, linearity, specificity and onedimensionality of traditional learning platforms. Due to its innovative character, the platform has received growing academic and professional support, and it is believed that it could constitute a genuine and innovative educational, conceptual and technological solution in the Brazilian context.

Like any investment, the shopping mall sector is subject to risks, among which is the retailer's discontinuity in the mall. This risk is related to the total cost of occupancy composed of the sum of the rent, rates and the mall's marketing fund. Thus, tools are needed to identify and analyze these risks. The aim of this study is to build a model based on the survival analysis's statistical technique, which enables the managers of a shopping mall to identify from what percentage of the total cost of occupancy in relation to sales Key Performance Cost (KPC), it is possible to gauge a retailer's continuity risk. We used a data sample consisting of 896 stores, located in six malls, for a period of 32 months. The results show that the model proved to be appropriate for indicating potential situations of default in advance. This predictive capability enables the shopping mall’s manager to adopt corrective measure to mitigate this kind of risk while there is still time.

This paper describes the results of a consultant who identified the competencies in sales in the retail of building materials in southern brazil in an attempt to ascertain which knowledge mobilized by individuals who are considered to be the best practitioners in the company. the company's goal was to build a training program for current and incoming salesmen that follow the organizational culture and history. the methodological design that guided the consultants was of a qualitative and descriptive nature. the resources and competencies of individuals were investigated in a dynamic, i.e., related to actions of the subjects studied in the context of work, considering the realities and specificities of the company, its mission, business type, structure and market integration. the work resulted in an array of knowledge and resources deployed by salesmen in the exercise of their activities in that organization. these features appear associated with the performance and efficiency when put into practice in order to deal with professional situations, including non-routine situations. thus, the competence of the sellers can be regarded as reflecting the combination of multiple knowledge articulating a set of personal and environmental resources. after receiving the results, the company initiated a training program for salespeople.
