The city of Telêmaco Borba was created under the influence of Klabin, a large pulp and paper industry. To mitigate the strong dependency developed by the city, the local government proposed the creation of the industrial district of Telêmaco Borba to Klabin and to timber magnates. To Klabin the district represented a possible destination for the excesses of raw material from its forests as well as diversification to reduce exposure to seasonal cycles of the pulp and paper industry. On the other hand, to the district Klabin represented both an economic alternative and a limitation to its development. This teaching case debates these dilemmas in the light of LPA and productive cluster concepts, and provides references for diagnostics and possibilities for actions for Klabin, the District and public institutions.

Em 2015, a TAC recebeu uma quantidade 14% superior de manuscritos para avaliação, em relação ao ano anterior. Ao mesmo tempo, aumentamos a seletividade, obtendo uma taxa de rejeição 21% maior, no mesmo período. Conseguimos bons resultados com as parcerias para fast track com os eventos: 3 E ́s, EnANPAD, SEMEAD e CASI. Nosso processo de avaliação também foi reformulado e alcançou bons resultados. Para os manuscritos submetidos em 2015, a primeira resposta aos autores foi dada, em média, em 2 meses, e, para a finalização da avaliação, a média foi de 3 meses. Já o tempo de publicação foi de 5 meses, aproximadamente.

This teaching case deals with three narratives of women who sought to approach a day of work, considering the reflections on their roles, conflict between work and life outside of work, time, and the career of academic women engaged in professional activities. This research emphasizes their search for higher qualification and competence in the professional and academic markets while reconciling this with their varied family, personal and work roles. The main themes involve a discussion of the world of work and these women’s roles, the nature of time, the objective and subjective aspects of time, and temporal structure. Thus, it is evident that time can be and is enriched when studied in a subjective perspective from these women’s perspectives and, furthermore, new temporal structures can be enacted by individuals and organizations looking for better balance and quality of life.

This technological article aims to analyze the development, launch and market evolution of the Volkswagen (VW) Fox when analyzed under the concept of value innovation. The research methodology was a longitudinal case study (1999-2014), as the analysis was limited to a single automotive product from its conception stage until the time the research was conducted. As a result, value innovation tools were adopted retrospectively in order to analyze a product developed by the researched company’s own process. In conclusion, the VW Fox market introduction could be considered as a case of value innovation.

Since exports affect the performance of firms and are an important determinant of the economic growth of countries, it is important to have a better understanding of the factors that influence the involvement of firms with exports. Such understanding will provide Governments with proper information for effective support programs to stimulate exports. This study of manufacturing firms – exporters and non-exporters – presents managers’ perceptions about the exports benefits and barriers, and about firms’ resources and capabilities to export. The reported perception of barriers and costs associated with the exports are similar across experienced exporters and non-exporters, suggesting that accumulated exporting experience acquired by the former does not seem to diminish the perception of the intensity of export barriers.

The JHU HLTCOE participated in the Cold Start and the Entity Discovery and Linking tasks of the 2016 Text Analysis Conference Knowledge Base Population evaluation. For our fifth year of participation in Cold Start we continued our research with the KELVIN system. We submitted experimental variants that explore use of linking to Freebase across three languages and add relations beyond those required by Cold Start. This is our second year of participation in EDL. We used KELVIN in all runs.

This technical report presents a model of financial management applied in a company in the civil construction industry in the State of São Paulo. It is a medium to large company with 24 years of experience in the heavy construction sector. At the time of research, the company had no formal management structure and an informal decision-making process. Results showed that the limitations impacted tactical and operational levels, as well as compromising strategy. An organizational structure was proposed that involved operational control of activities and allowed for conceptual development to support the management process. In addition, a panel of indicators (performance dashboard) including economic, rentability, risk, profitability, cash flow, capital structure and liquidity categories was developed. Thus, the study offers practical contributions for midsize companies and can be used as an element in teaching undergraduate courses and in post-graduate research.

Promoting reflection on the performance of municipal managers is the objective of this teaching case study. It is intended to create a real situation for students to examine, understand and evaluate the complexity of political interests in decision-making processes in a small rural municipality in Minas Gerais, Brazil. This case provides opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students to familiarize themselves with the concepts related to municipal government. The case uses fictitious information for a better understanding of the situation experienced in the city. Data was obtained through bibliographic and documentary research, covering discussions about public policy and the role of the city manager, using Policy Cycle theory as reference.

Impact investments aim to generate social and environmental impact beyond financial return and have grown considerably in recent years. This paper presents a set of guidelines aimed at supporting agents within the impact investing ecosystem in their effort to carry out impact evaluations. The proposed method has three principles: (a) few and highly relevant indicators; (b) impact measured over time, before and after the project; and (c) comparison to a control group of similar subjects who were not affected by the project. Years. Although there are clear and established methods to measure the financial return on these investments, various approaches have been used to measure environmental impact. However, there is still much uncertainty about how to reconcile financial and social objectives. These guidelines can be potentially used by social entrepreneurs, accelerators, investments funds, social enterprises, foundations, institutions and governmental agencies dealing with socioenvironmental projects. Thus, we hope to contribute to the formation, development, and consolidation of the impact investing industry.
