Urban trees must be both present and healthy to provide vital ecosystem services, but there are documented inequities in tree canopy cover within U.S. cities. These inequities, like cities themselves, are not static. However, the influence of urban social and physical change itself on urban tree canopy structure, and especially tree stress, is poorly understood, which limits the efficacy of long-term urban forest planning. Gentrification, the process by which investments in a neighborhood displace low-income residents, can disrupt both social relationships and the physical space of the neighborhood, and can thus influence patterns of tree planting, investment in tree care, and likelihood of tree damage. Here, we quantify patterns in the number, diversity, and stress of street trees stress across neighborhoods in two regions experiencing gentrification: the West Side of Chicago, IL and Durham, NC. We found variation in the number, diversity and stress of street trees, including numerous regions where more than a third of street trees had high stress. However, the results do not indicate a uniform relationship between social and physical disruption and the number, diversity, or stress of trees. Our results and supplementary case study analysis hint at the role of municipal policies alongside non-governmental and community actions especially related to tree planting and potentially tree care. Research and management that considers the role of actors such as residents, local non-profits, and city governments together may be better able to adjust management based on local conditions to cultivate a more resilient urban street tree population.

Climate change is altering the flowering phenology of allergenic trees, with growing implications for human health and ecosystems. In Central Europe, Alnus, Corylus, and Betula (Betulaceae) are key spring-flowering taxa and major sources of airborne allergens. This study integrates long-term airborne pollen records to: (i) detect long-term trends in the start of main pollen seasons across five cities in Slovakia and the Czech Republic, (ii) fit phenological models to predict pollen exposure with the PhenoFlex model, and (iii) project future flowering shifts under two climate scenarios (SSP2–4.5 and SSP5–8.5). Our results reveal a significant advancement in Alnus and Corylus flowering, while Betula shows no clear trend. Projections suggest that warming will accelerate flowering in Betula but may delay or reverse current trends in Alnus and Corylus due to disrupted chilling accumulation. By integrating this model with aerobiological data, this study offers critical insights for allergen forecasting, urban greenery planning, and climate adaptation strategies in a region with limited prior coverage.

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the critical role of urban parks in ensuring equitable access to all community groups, emerging as a pivotal issue in urban planning and public policy. This study leverages extensive smartphone data to track how the pandemic has reshaped the utilization of park facilities by diverse socio-economic groups in Austin from 2019 to 2021. The results indicate significant shifts in park usage, notably an increase in visits to smaller parks and green spaces near residential areas during pandemic. The study reveals distinct differences in the attractiveness of park facilities to various demographics, such as women, the older adults, youths, and ethnic minorities: traditional sports facilities were less appealing to the older adults, whereas playgrounds were especially favored by children and the older adults. During the pandemic, golf courses and soccer fields negatively impacted vulnerable groups, the allure of gyms declined in the early stages, and swimming pools regained popularity as the pandemic was brought under control. These findings highlight the critical role of park facilities during public health crises and offer concrete recommendations for urban planners and policymakers to enhance the accessibility and inclusiveness of park facilities, ensuring that parks serve as valuable, equitable spaces for health and social interaction.

Biocultural homogenization has extended worldwide, causing biodiversity and cultural diversity loss, leading to extractive and homogenized human-nonhuman relationships. To overcome this, internationally promoted nature-based solutions (NbS) and ecosystem-based efforts have been promoted, however those have exacerbated diversity loss by advocating a narrow range of actions and values of nature, rather than acknowledging the multiple conceptions and perceptions that different communities have of it. Yet, some bottom-up initiatives have actively resisted this trend by reinforcing local cultural perspectives of engaging with nature to address the triple planetary crisis. This paper analyzes three community-led initiatives (CLIs) in Latin America that exemplify alternative, bottom-up approaches for supporting urban nature. Using in-depth interviews and social media content analysis we identified alternative discourses related to ‘living with’ and ‘living as nature’. The findings highlight the role of CLIs in Latin American cities for promoting and also conserving alternative discourses that withstand homogenization while advocating for biocultural diversity. These initiatives redefine ancestral values and perceptions about nature, drawing on alternative visions and practices such as 'buen vivir' and 'pachamama' to foster inclusive urban development strategies.

Urban parks are often popular places for recreation and restorative experiences. While recreation involvement has been linked to human health, few studies have examined the role of recreation involvement in shaping users’ restorative experiences. To address this research gap, we conducted two empirical studies to test the hypothesis that recreation involvement may be an important pathway through which park environments affect individual restorative effects. Study 1 used a repeated-measures approach to investigate how recreation involvement moderates the effects of different urban park landscape types on physiological, emotional, and subjective recovery experiences. Study 2 collected survey data from urban park users to examine the mediating role of recreation involvement in the relationship between landscape elements and restorative effects. The results indicate that recreation involvement moderates the relationship between landscape types and subjective recovery. A high level of recreation involvement enhances personal subjective recovery in waterfront and open lawn spaces. Moreover, recreation involvement also partially mediates the effect of plants on subjective recovery, while fully mediating the effects of water and facilities on subjective recovery. Demographic and park visit characteristics moderated these relationships. Our study highlights the significant role of recreation involvement in enhancing the restorative effects of urban park environments. Future urban park design should prioritize the interaction between plants, water, facilities and recreation experiences, while focusing on the quality of these landscape features in rationality, naturalness and comfort, especially in open lawns and waterfront areas. This helps to improve the subjective recovery experience and overall well-being.

Urbanization profoundly reshapes the diversity patterns of urban spontaneous plants, which are effective indicators of urban environmental change. Categorizing ecological species groups (ESGs) are crucial for understanding species-environment relationships and for supporting biodiversity conservation. In this study, 586 spontaneous plants across 16 cities in Yunnan province, China, were classified into four ESGs using a two-way clustering approach that integrates urban-rural gradients (expressed by the distance to city boundary) and human activity intensity (the proportion of impervious surface), and their indicator species were subsequently identified. The four ESGs—disturbance-sensitive urbanphob plants (DSUP, 29.5 %), disturbance-tolerant urbanphob plants (DTUP, 26.5 %), disturbance-tolerant urbanophil plants (DTUO, 22.9 %), and disturbance-sensitive urbanophil plants (DSUO, 21.2 %). Trend analysis revealed that only DSUP shows consistent response across both urbanization gradients, suggesting that relying on a single urbanization metric may bias in ESG classification and obscure the complexity of plant responses to urbanization intensity. Functional diversity metrics combined with a null model approach revealed significant trait convergence within ESGs (except DSUO) and clear variability among them, suggesting a convergence in traits driven by urbanization filtering effects. Our findings revealed that indicator species of ESGs are predominantly by herbaceous, native, and autochorous species. Nonetheless, trait variations still emerged along disturbance gradients. In particular, fruit type composition varied substantially among indicator species of ESGs, with caryopsis predominated in DSUP (>60 %), pod in DTUP (>25 %), capsule and achene in DTUO (25.0 % and 20.8 %, respectively), and caryopsis (29.4 %) and nut (23.5 %) in DSUO. Our study emphasizes the difference in species adaptation strategies at different levels of urbanization, underscoring the imperative to develop appropriate habitat conservation strategies that align with species-specific habitat preferences.

In this study, 586 spontaneous plants across 16 cities in Yunnan province, China, were classified into four ESGs using a two-way clustering approach that integrates urban-rural gradients (expressed by the distance to city boundary) and human activity intensity (the proportion of impervious surface), and their indicator species were subsequently identified. The four ESGs—disturbance-sensitive urbanphob plants (DSUP, 29.5 %), disturbance-tolerant urbanphob plants (DTUP, 26.5 %), disturbance-tolerant urbanophil plants (DTUO, 22.9 %), and disturbance-sensitive urbanophil plants (DSUO, 21.2 %). Trend analysis revealed that only DSUP shows consistent response across both urbanization gradients, suggesting that relying on a single urbanization metric may bias in ESG classification and obscure the complexity of plant responses to urbanization intensity. Functional diversity metrics combined with a null model approach revealed significant trait convergence within ESGs (except DSUO) and clear variability among them, suggesting a convergence in traits driven by urbanization filtering effects. Our findings revealed that indicator species of ESGs are predominantly by herbaceous, native, and autochorous species. Nonetheless, trait variations still emerged along disturbance gradients. In particular, fruit type composition varied substantially among indicator species of ESGs, with caryopsis predominated in DSUP (&gt;60 %), pod in DTUP (&gt;25 %), capsule and achene in DTUO (25.0 % and 20.8 %, respectively), and caryopsis (29.4 %) and nut (23.5 %) in DSUO. Our study emphasizes the difference in species adaptation strategies at different levels of urbanization, underscoring the imperative to develop appropriate habitat conservation strategies that align with species-specific habitat preferences.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":49394,"journal":{"name":"Urban Forestry & Urban Greening","volume":"117 ","pages":"Article 129250"},"PeriodicalIF":6.7,"publicationDate":"2025-12-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"145845105","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The disconnect between public perception and actual biodiversity in the social-ecological system has become a challenge in integrating biodiversity conservation with urban development and human well-being. Compared to actual biodiversity, a deep exploration of perceived biodiversity by residents in urban green spaces (UGSs) can help promote understanding the relationship between humans and nature. However, there is still a lack of systematic knowledge regarding what factors affect the perceived biodiversity in UGSs and how they affect it. In this study, we explored how individual attributes, habitat structure and actual biodiversity impact four perceived biodiversity variables (i.e., perceived plant/bird richness and abundance) in UGSs through a survey of 186 respondents. The results showed that all these factors had significant effects on perceived biodiversity, among which individual and environmental features had similar impacts on perceived plant diversity, but individual attributes were more important for perceived bird diversity. Specifically, tree-covered pavement and evergreen tree proportion, as well as actual shrubs, herb and bird species richness positively affected perceived biodiversity, while deciduous tree proportion had a negative effect. Meanwhile, visiting frequency, having knowledge background, visiting for exercise, age and visiting duration had a positive association, but visiting for parent-child interactions showed a negative association. Based on the insights from these results, an adaptive intervention pathway and five evidence-based strategies for policymakers were proposed to promote public perception and participation in urban biodiversity conservation.

The Royal Botanical Garden of Madrid (RBGM), a key institution for botanical research and education in Spain, and part of a UNESCO World Heritage Cultural Landscape, faces the challenge of balancing conservation, education, and recreation in an urban environment. To optimize these functions, this study jointly investigates visitor preferences and willingness to pay for different management alternatives at RBGM. Using a Discrete Choice Experiment, this study analyzes preferences for wild plant presence, collection of fallen leaves, cat control, rental space, coffee shop expansion, pesticide use, and entrance fees. The study surveyed 724 visitors in 2018–2019, and results show a strong preference for sustainable practices that increase ecological functionality, such as increasing the area for wild plants and reducing the use of pesticides. Visitors also value amenities and provided they support for educational and conservation goals of the garden. Willingness to pay analysis indicates support for higher admission fees if they improve management and conservation efforts. This study provides empirical insights for updating management practices at historic botanical gardens to ensure relevance to contemporary environmental challenges and visitor expectations. Integrating visitor preferences into strategic decisions can enhance the role of botanical gardens as vital urban green spaces that support biodiversity, education, and recreation.
