Industrial engineering is a discipline that has grown parallel to that of the industrial revolutions. However, what are the next steps for the industrial engineer of the future? In the wake of constant change and technological developments, there is a call for industrial engineers to reflect on the past and to plan for what may await. Amidst a global pandemic, the need for reflection and planning may be of greater importance now more than ever before. This paper serves as a recollection of the key steps taken to develop industrial engineering in history and explores what the future may hold for the field. The ideas of the discipline’s pioneers are presented in the study, and the visions of up-and-coming key players are consolidated in order to predict the future of industrial engineering.

PRE-POSITIONING OF A RELIEF CHAIN IN HUMANITARIAN LOGISTICS UNDER UNCERTAINTY IN ROAD ACCIDENTS: A REAL-CASE STUDY 道路事故不确定性下人道主义物流救济链的预定位:一个实际案例研究

Road accidents, as one of the causes of mortality in human societies, have many adverse social and economic consequences. Various measures can improve the safety of travel. One of them is to find appropriate location of relief infrastructures. The proper pre-positioning of relief chains locations  can decrease road users’ fatalities. Thus this paper presents a  multi-objective mathematical model to the pre-positioning of a relief chain for road accidents. Then the model is solved by a non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm. Factors that affect the location of relief chains are identified using a multi-attribute decision-making method. Finally, potential locations are proposed for the relief chain locations.

This study aims to develop a conceptual framework for the certification of laser powder bed fusion quality management systems for aerospace applications. This research is structured around industry standards and best practices. The developed framework consists of a process map that identifies the required processes and activities for the realisation of parts. Industry standards and best practices are referenced to form standard operating procedures. The framework was presented to subject matter experts within the industry and academia, whose feedback was positive.

Enterprises need to work with a proper third-party logistics provider to reduce costs and increase their logistics performance; so the third-party logistics (3PL) provider selection problem is a significant one for them. In this study, grey step-wise weight assessment ratio analysis (SWARA) and grey combinative distance-based assessment (CODAS) are proposed to  address this problem. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, no other study uses grey SWARA and grey CODAS together to solve any problem. Therefore a new grey hybrid model incorporating grey SWARA and grey CODAS is proposed to identify the best 3PL provider.

The article deals with the preferred approach to determine the cost component in the social cost-benefit analysis (SCBA) of road projects in South Africa. The article is in four parts. The first part, the introduction, provides the reasons why investment cost should be identified as a single cost entity in the SCBA of a road project, regardless of the criteria according to which a project is adjudicated. The second part discusses the principles that guide the determination of the social opportunity costs (SOC) of road projects. The third part identifies the two items that form the cost component of the SCBA of road projects; the SOC of (i) the land required to accommodate the road reserve, and (ii) the construction of the road. The cost component of the latter is sub-divided into labour, plant, equipment, fuel, materials, and normal profit. The section also details a recommended procedure to convert the financial budget of a road construction project to an estimate of its SOC. The fourth section draws some conclusions from the study.

The development of cost-integrated value-stream mapping (CVSM) as a lean assessment tool for identifying wastage in the production process is presented in this article. In conventional VSM, the time involved in various processes is mapped without tracking the accumulation of direct and indirect costs. In the proposed CVSM, the cost of production is also accounted for, along with the time domain of conventional value-stream mapping. The time investment of the cost is also incorporated in CVSM. Value-added and non-value-added costs can thus be easily recognised in the time scale This novel method helps to calculate the value addition in monetary terms, and thus the actual production cost of the processes is acknowledged accurately. Since the wastage is quantified in the cost domain, the processes in which lean tools need to be implemented can be identified. The details of establishing CVSM are presented along with a study of its implementation in a glove manufacturing industry.

With the advent of touchscreen-based smart devices, several studies on the usability of the stylus, a typical touchscreen input method, have been conducted. However, usability studies that simply focus on completing tasks are not suitable for investigating the stylus in various use contexts  and with qualitative values. In other words, the context from the user’s  point of view should be investigated. Therefore this study aims to provide usability directions for improving the stylus system by structurally investigating recent stylus-related studies. After examining stylus-related studies between 2004 to 2017, they were mainly classified into two cases: those considering the use of the stylus in various environments, and those focused on developing the stylus by applying new sensory feedback to increase usability. By systematically analysing and classifying each study, unique features of the stylus were identified and examples of stylus usage in certain domains were summarised. Furthermore, to improve usability, sensory feedback methods that could be applied to the stylus were established. In conclusion, this study derived sensory feedback that would be suitable for the use context of styluses, and proposed guidelines to improve the usability of stylus systems through sensory feedback.

Before any acquired knowledge is used or adds value to the receiving project (members), it must be accepted by its recipients, leading to an increase in their positive attitudes towards, and intended use of, the acquired knowledge. To be willing to accept knowledge, the receiving project’s team members must perceive it to have value and be easy to use.  The focus of this exploratory paper is to develop and empirically test relevant sub-dimensions of perceived value and ease-of-use. The sub- dimensions were identified through a literature review, and measurement scales were developed empirically by applying a well-established scale development methodology.

LEADERSHIP STYLES AND THEIR IMPACT ON LEAN SIX SIGMA PRACTICES IN INDIAN INDUSTRIES 领导风格及其对印度工业精益六西格玛实践的影响

The study aims to investigate the impact of different leadership styles on the Lean Six Sigma practices of manufacturing and service industries in India. In this study, the relationships between different leadership styles  and Lean Six Sigma practices were determined by using Welch’s  test and regression analysis.  Welch’s test proved that there is a significant  difference between the manufacturing and service sectors in the case of the instrumental and supportive leadership styles, but no significant difference in the participative leadership style while practising Lean Six Sigma. The results of Welch’s test show ed that the service sectors were more interested in Lean Six Sigma-based practices. The results also revealed that the relationships between the participative, supportive, and instrumental leadership styles and Lean Six Sigma practices were highly significant for both the manufacturing and the service sectors in India. This finding offers a managerial perspective that these three types of leadership styles could potentially ensure the eventual improvement of Lean Six Sigma practices.
