The discourse of introduction is a discourse exploiting full of contextual meanings. By means of two approaches, viz. situational context and contextual configuration, this paper aims to delve deeper into the discourse of formal and informal introductions in everyday English conversation. Both discourses are taken from the book Everyday Conversation. The data were analyzed from two paradigmatic approaches, i.e., situational context with the components of field, tenor, and mode, and contextual configuration with the three main maxims of OOI (obligatory, optional, and iteration). Based on the careful analysis, the findings demonstrate that both introduction discourses, whether formal or informal ones, are built on the foundation of two types of elements, namely obligatory and optional, which are interwoven within a potential common structure of the following contextual configuration: (OE). [IR^IG1^IG2]. (IE)(context-dependent) > [(R)^(RC)]. Ultimately, through this paradigmatic approach to the discourse of introduction, it arrives at an understanding that the relationship between language and its contextual use is that of mutuality; shall language need context in the process of interpretation, the context ipso facto needs language to manifest per se.

John Banville’s The Sea (2005) has its entire story drawn on memory. Through a close textual analysis, the paper examines the novel through the framework of memory. The paper is structured around the ideas put forth by the philosopher Edward S. Casey and examines how memories play a significant role in forming an identity within the individual and how memories are formed from spaces. Banville through his narrative techniques through the character indirectly presents the reality of the world. His withdrawal into the past by Max in the novel is not part of a theme but rather a unique narrative strategy employed by Banville. An individual has a sense of connection to their world with frequent interactions with the spaces around them. The research investigates how the spaces instigate the journey to the past in the character Max Morden. The sea and the house where Max spent his childhood are the spaces that aid in giving a sense of identity to Max who feels lost after the death of his wife. In a journey of searching for himself, he ends up visiting the place where he spent a holiday vacation during his childhood. It is through the engagement with these spaces and recollected memories from them that the character Max ultimately comes to a self-realization of his lost identity and in the end feels a sense of belonging to the world.

The art of teaching speech communication should be varied according to current trends. Teaching speaking should focus on the practice of the language, which should be done in pairs or groups. However, the COVID-19 pandemic restricted students from attending schools, making speaking in English impossible. Social distancing was enforced and still is now, when they returned to school, ruling out group activities or much speaking in classrooms. This was an issue among English language teachers in Malaysia as the teaching of English uses a modular system that comprises Listening and Speaking, Reading, and Writing. Listening and speaking could not be conducted at will. Pupils were deprived of opportunities to practice the English language in classrooms. Therefore, the suggested course of action was to improve speech communication by utilising the technologically useful application TikTok and its essential functionalities. This study aims to investigate how TikTok features can improve speech communication and examine learners' perceptions after applying the TikTok features to improve their speaking skills. The instruments used for this study are speaking rubrics for speaking tests and a questionnaire. A purposive sampling of 100 students was used. The results show that the respondents scored higher in their post-test than their pre-test after using TikTok to improve their speech communication. All respondents perceived the use of TikTok as positive and encouraging. The implication of the findings includes introducing innovative speaking practice measures such as the development of mobile learning, and a renewed teaching methodology to teach speech communication.

This qualitative paper covered an in-depth investigation of using different types of conjunctions taking into consideration their meaning and functions. To investigate the common issues of using conjunctions and exploring the most types of conjunctions that the participants applied, ZPD was framed to develop the study. The participants were undergraduates who were studying at one of the Saudi universities. They were selected from level one who enrolled in the Grammar 1 course. The sample of the study was chosen randomly. They were divided into two groups, which were Group one and Group two. Both received the same instructions from the same instructor in the class. The difference was that group one had an opportunity to use their textbook and were allowed to discuss and receive help from their partners. Whereas, group two did not receive any help; they were supposed to structure their written texts individually. For this reason, the zone of proximal development theory was selected as a framework. The findings of the study highlighted the participants’ issues in using conjunctions, including fragment sentences, creating too-long sentences with unclear messages, and failing to use punctuations with conjunctions. Further, the results listed the conjunctions that each group used. Group two only used three familiar conjunctions, which were And, But, and Because. However, group one was better at using various conjunctions because they tried to use more types, such as And, Or, So, But, and Because. Thus, applying cooperative learning and scaffolding raised the chance of using student-centered methods in grammar classrooms.

This article exposes the multi- faceted dimensions of anomie, Emile Durkheim’s highly controversial theory, and the way it applies to Laila Lalami’s novel Hope and Other Dangerous Pursuits (2005). This paper draws on Durkheim’s theory and aims at exploring the anomic world Lalami creates in her representation of Morocco during the postcolonial period and the impact of a state of normlessness on her characters’ experiences. Social norms have been blurred and common values and meanings have lost their significance and power to unite individuals due to economic difficulties, globalization, and colonization. The resulting instability and breakdown of ideals has left Lalami’s characters psychologically paralyzed and unsettled by emergent feelings of alienation, confusion, and an inability to deal with a period of cultural and social upheavals and a debilitated community. Eventually, they are forced to face a fractured society that lacks a sense of direction, a purpose in life, and the social cohesion that previously reinforced a collective conscience. The discussion mainly focuses on the disintegration of family and loss of a moral system that regulates society, and various attempts at recovery from such anomic conditions infiltrating Moroccan culture in Lalami’s novel.

This study explores the language planning efforts for English language maintenance employed by sojourning Saudi families after returning to their home country. The study concludes that the importance of English in the development of different sectors in Saudi Arabia and the advantages of bilingualism in economic, health, and cognitive aspects for children played a significant role in the families’ language planning decisions. The study showed that the mothers maintained and developed their children’s English through following planned language strategies. A focus group discussion and semi-structured interviews illustrated that the mothers used four main strategies, which are speaking English exclusively at home, watching English television shows, maintaining relationships with English native speakers, and playing online educational games in English. The findings of this research study contribute to achieving understanding of sojourner families’ L2 maintenance efforts after returning to their home countries when those are monolingual countries such as Saudi Arabia. The study close with recommendations for future research to further develop this field of research.

This article presents a comprehensive systematic literature review of the associations between genre-based approaches (GBAs) and English as a second language (ESL) or English as a foreign language (EFL) writing. It provides an overview of GBAs and second language (L2) writing. The review further elaborates on the theoretical backgrounds of GBAs and ESL/EFL writing. The article then critically reviews 38 studies conducted on GBAs and ESL/EFL writing in the past 20 years (2003-2023). A methodological review was also performed to analyze the various research methods employed by previous researchers. Four major themes of research on GBAs and ESL/EFL writing were identified: research articles’ writing, thesis or dissertations writing, argumentative writing, and other types of professional writing. Additionally, three major methodological approaches were identified: qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods. The article culminates by discussing the implications of the results of this review and recommends promising directions for future research.

This study employs a discourse analysis (DA) framework to explore the linguistic and textual features of Surah Al-Duha in the Holy Quran and its implications for contemporary discourse. The study aims to gain a deeper understanding of the discursive elements and patterns of the Surah and its context to explain how language is used to shape meaning and construct social structures and ideologies. The study used a qualitative research design that draws on the principles of DA to analyze the Surah's grammar, syntax, lexicon, and metaphorical language. The study also explained the historical, social, and cultural context of the Surah to explore its relevance and implications for contemporary discourse. The findings of the study showed that several discursive strategies and patterns were employed in the text, including the use of metaphorical language, intertextual references, and repetition of certain words and phrases. These strategies and patterns contribute to the overall meaning and interpretation of the text and highlight how power, identity, and ideology are constructed and negotiated in religious discourse. The study presents an original and valuable contribution to the field of discourse analysis and the understanding of the Quran as a religious text.

In recent years, as women continue to break through barriers and shatter glass ceilings, it becomes necessary to understand how they construct their identities as successful individuals. To fulfill this purpose, this research paper analyzed selected TED Talks delivered by five successful women entrepreneurs. The present study aims to unravel how women perceive success according to their personal experiences. The analysis is conducted in two phases. In the first, Halliday’s transitivity system was used. In the second phase, Hyland’s (2005) analysis of stance was applied to scrutinize the linguistic choices made by the speakers to construct and convey their identities as successful individuals. Results of data analysis revealed that with the prevailing use of material transitivity processes, successful women were able to present their experiences clearly. The dominance of self-mentions and scarcity of hedges revealed their confidence and certainty in their speech and their success experience as well.

The present paper is a critical discourse analysis (CDA), which is basically based on Fairclough’s (2001) Three-dimensional model, the descriptive stage. It specifically focuses on the ideological function of vocabulary in the political text. The analyzed data includes six speeches of Ukraine President Zelensky that were delivered virtually to the European and National parliaments from 1-20 March 2022. Moreover, a qualitative approach is employed as the research methodology for data analysis. However, the primary objective of this research is to address the following question: To what extent can vocabulary, specifically in terms of overwording, meaning relations, and wording at the microstructure level, reflect aspects of President Zelensky’s ideological stance as reflected in his speeches? The analysis results indicate that vocabulary reflects a significant part of President Zelensky’s ideology and he highly depends on them to send ideological messages.
