What role will cultural heritage play in shaping the future? Will the link between the past and the future be broken or will it be preserved? Ilya Georgievich Lezhava If we try to imagine a future in which there is no longer anything called historical and architectural heritage, what will happen? If suddenly the real and often powerful tendencies to “destroy everything and build anew” prevail? Who will want to live in such a “city of robots”, as the young poet Alexander Delfinov described it: In the city of robots there is no single centre There is no building below one kilometre Armoured citadels are all around Tangled tunnels lead underground There are no plants in the vicinity The buildings guarantee absolute sterility... People dedicated to preserving heritage are often seen as worshippers of the past. This is unfair. Preserving heritage is caring for the future. We continue the theme of historical and architectural heritage for the sake of the past and present, but mainly for the sake of the future.

The future is happening right now… If you live in the house, it will not fall down. Arseny Tarkovsky Life, life   Architecture plays a very special role in the complicated relationship between the past, present and future. The oldest examples of human architectural activity are over 45 thousand years old. But the future is also powerfully present in architecture. Of course, hardly anyone of today’s designers think forty millennia ahead, but making projections for several centuries looks quite reasonable. Regarding the future, every architect has (should have) an understandable picture of the world in relation to at least the city in which he is working, or at least the neighbourhood for which he is designing a project. In urban planning, even unrealised projects and concepts often remain relevant for a long time and determine the development direction for a city, territory, and sometimes a settlement system in the country; they influence the future. Many aphorisms on the subject of the future are ironic in nature. Niels Bohr said: “It is very difficult to make an accurate prediction, especially about the future”. And so we faced the uncertainty of the future when preparing this issue. One thing was planned, but with the help of our regular and new contributors, it turned out to be something quite different. The future is full of surprises, and that is the only thing that can be confidently predicted. Thinking about the future constantly balances between hope and fear, between utopia and anti-utopia. Today, the balance between optimism and pessimism seems to incline towards pessimism, and dire predictions clearly prevail. All the more reason to return again and again to the theme of the future in its various aspects – the future of Irkutsk, cities and countries of the world, the future of today’s architecture, the future of historical and cultural heritage... The architectural profession is to shape the future and determine its image.

Where to search for the future?

Architecture and urban planning are turned to the future due to the durability of their works. Therefore, the development of architecture is closely related to the state of futurology and the presence of fruitful ideas and images of the future in it. The current situation in this sphere is characterised by the predominance of ideas about the future of either linear or retrospective type. The linear type builds an image of the future, continuing the tendencies of the present with small quantitative changes. The retrospective type draws the image of the future as a return to previous formations, reproducing the social structures of feudalism on a new technological basis.

Energy efficient small size housing is a strong trend in the development of architecture. In most countries of the world, there is a growing interest in small and tiny housing with minimal energy consumption for heating and air conditioning. Small houses are also able to solve some problems in urban planning, such as filling in awkward building lots and other voids in the city structure. Small houses look very promising in terms of solving the problem of homelessness. This article examines the potential of Jordan’s traditional small houses as a basis for modern house building and presents the results of a survey of Jordanian architects and experts.

Textual history of the future city: Retrofuturism as an algorithm

The purpose of the article is to study the algorithms and patterns of social perception of the ‘city of the future’. The following provisions are conceptualized: the social perception of the ‘city of the future’ is determined by the discourse of the city of the past and, thus, is textualized; the cognitive algorithm of social perception of the future is similar to the algorithm of perception of the past; the perception of the past is as subjective as the perception of the future. The institute of epistemological prognostics is proposed as a conceptual basis for planning the city of the future, in the matrix of which ‘development clusters’ occupy a special place. These clusters are similar to the once empty cells of the periodic table and inevitably find their fulfillment in the process of intellectual communication between scientists and practitioners.

Urban studies in Russia: Sociality relay races

Yulia Kozlova
This article aims to show the interdependence of science and society by the example of the development of the national sociology of the city (social urbanism). The author proposes а new approach to the periodization of the development of Russian urban sociology based on the prevailing type of sociality. The idea is that the social nature of the modern city determines the need for a new scientific direction, ‘epistemological urbanism’, the construction of a discursive meta-model of modern domestic urbanism, which integrates an internal (cognitive-research), external (normative-communicative) and open (general cultural) sociality. The article solves the problem of systemic characteristics of the epistemological and substantive content of Russian social urbanism at different stages of its formation, current social status and development vectors. The methodological basis of the study is the typology of sociality (I. T. Kasavin). The study also uses the typology of theoretical discourses of urbanism (E. Soja) and the periodization of Russian urbanism based on the typology of social structure (O. N. Yanitsky).

Eco-cities – utopia or... the future

The review addresses the diversity of approaches to the development of the idea of an “eco-city” which emerged at the end of the 20th century and represents a revival of the “garden city” concept. An ecocity (eco-city, ecological city, green city, sustainable city, smart city) is a forced response of urban planners, designers, industrialists, entrepreneurs, scientists, and governments to the demands of civilization’s transition to the sixth technological mode in the conditions of the accelerated scientific and technological revolution at the beginning of the 21st century. This is a response to the obvious trend of increasing ecological threats, risks, and challenges. The review presents contemporary examples of the creation of ecocities and ecovillages in countries and regions with varying levels of socio-economic development.
