The literature on migrants’ self-selection is focused on labour migrants, while little is known about refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs). We contribute to this scant literature, by (1) examining a broad set of factors that could determine self-selection, (2) contrasting self-selection profiles of refugees and IDPs, and (3) comparing self-selection profiles of refugees across countries. Specifically, we compare the self-selection profiles of Ukrainian refugees and IDPs with stayers in the months directly following the Russian full-scale invasion in February 2022. We draw on unique, cross-nationally comparative data from the OneUA project, which surveyed Ukrainian refugees and displaced persons in Europe as well as those who stayed in Ukraine in the summer of 2022. More than 24,000 Ukrainian women residing in nine countries participated in this survey. We find systematic empirical patterns of self-selection related to people’s region of origin, family status, and individual-level characteristics.

Abstract This article focuses on how artists who had to flee Syria between 2011 and 2016 have restarted their artistic careers in Austria. Pries’ concept of arrival and Lamont’s symbolic boundary approach offer an analytical framework for examining the process of becoming an artist anew. By drawing on data collected from a 4-year ethnography in various fields of cultural production in Vienna, this article sheds light on the barriers these artists face in their process of arriving. The findings show two superordinate challenges: ‘having to start from zero’ and ‘struggling to be seen and recognized as artist’. A better understanding of the factors that affect refugees’ artistic practices could be particularly beneficial regarding the role of art as a means of social inclusion. Finally, the question arises as to what extent artistic pathways can serve as a lens for studying the experience of arrival in the context of forced migration.

Abstract This article addresses the way that humanitarian conditioning continues in the lives of refugees after receiving asylum in Europe while also highlighting the perspective of refugees as they experience official and informal processes of integration. The ways the rhetoric of suffering must be invoked at various times throughout the asylum process are well documented. Less attention, however, has been paid to how asylum recipients in Europe continue to navigate these structures. Drawing on over 20 months of ethnographic research in Paris, France, this article explores the way that these resettled Syrian refugees encounter the rhetoric of suffering and other asylum structures in their everyday lives as an ongoing form of humanitarian conditioning. Through a focus on capabilities and aspirations, this article ultimately reveals how resettled refugees navigate this humanitarian conditioning to carve out lives and create new trajectories of integration in the wake of asylum in France.
