Optimal design strategy of traditional courtyard based on performance and data-driven method—A case study of Yanshen ancient town, China 基于性能与数据驱动的传统院落优化设计策略——以盐深古镇为例

To address the insufficient integration of performance evaluation and contextual analysis in traditional architectural design, this paper proposes a design workflow that combines data-driven and performance-driven approaches, establishing a comprehensive operational pathway from typology selection and design generation to performance assessment. Using Yanshen Ancient Town, a cold region, as the study area, the research evaluates 18 traditional courtyard types and 8 brick kiln courtyard types. Benchmark models are selected based on the combined performance of PET (Physiological Equivalent Temperature) and MRT (Mean Radiant Temperature) indices. Subsequently, multiple performance indicators, including indoor and outdoor thermal comfort, indoor illuminance, and building energy consumption, are integrated into the analysis. Using a genetic algorithm, Pareto optimal solutions that meet performance requirements are iteratively optimized and filtered. Based on the learning rates and various evaluation indicators, XGBoost is ultimately selected to classify and predict the overall building performance. Results indicate that the model achieves an average prediction accuracy of 83.6%. Additionally, SHAP analysis of the independent variables in the algorithm reveals distinct influencing trends under different performance labels. The workflow demonstrates the feasibility of incorporating performance prediction in the early design stage of village courtyards, significantly enhancing the efficiency of feedback and follow-up between design decision-making and performance evaluation.

Image clustering algorithm and psychological perception in historical building colour rating research: A case study of Guangzhou, China 历史建筑色彩评级研究中的图像聚类算法与心理感知——以广州为例

This study aims to construct a new method for collecting colours from Guangzhou historical buildings using the Natural Color Sytem (NCS) colour system for on-site comparison. It seeks to detect and classify the primary and secondary colours of the buildings through image attributes, and to analyse the group co-occurrence and clustering algorithm characteristics of the colours of the historical buildings, as well as the colour hierarchy based on the image clustering algorithm. The study further evaluates the colour ratings of the historical buildings through questionnaire validation, explores the relationship between colour attributes (hue, lightness, and chroma), and classifies the colour evaluation criteria into five tiers. It was found that the symbiotic clustering diagrams of the colours of the historic buildings in Guangzhou exhibited distinct colour rating relationships, with the clustering colour hierarchy showing a high correlation with the results of the colour ratings assessed by questionnaire validation. A close relationship between the computer-generated output and the perceptual judgement is demonstrated, further proving the reliability and accuracy of the computer model. The results of the study provide comparable data and practical tools for colour planning and management of urban historic building facades.

Reflection and importance of user interventions in changes and or transformations in temporary housing after the earthquake 地震后临时住房变化和/或改造中用户干预的反思和重要性

Temporary housing is one of the most important elements in disaster recovery and reconstruction activities in emergency situations. This study predicts that post-disaster housing and social life needs can be improved through user satisfaction analyses and underlines that user experiences can guide the achievement of better design solutions in temporary housing. In this context, the case study is based on an evaluation of the changes and/or transformations that took place as a result of the Lagoon Hobby Houses campus, built in the Kahramanmaraş Expo area, being opened to the use of disaster victims as temporary housing after the 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquake. The findings suggest that improvements can be made in evidence- and experience-based design and post-disaster temporary housing design criteria by creating reserve areas for residences, designing common areas that encourage socialization and interaction, and providing access to green areas to overcome post-earthquake traumas more easily.

Rapid urbanization in China presents complex challenges for urban development, particularly in older neighborhoods. The rise of digital cities and the shift from expansion to optimizing existing urban areas have highlighted significant issues related to infrastructure, regeneration, and the preservation of local characteristics. These challenges hinder sustainable urban development and negatively impact residents' quality of life, making the transition to smart cities imperative. This study uses Suzhou's old neighborhoods as a case study, employing big data and Geographic Information System (GIS) software to conduct a comprehensive quantitative assessment. Techniques such as kernel density and accessibility analysis reveal key issues in infrastructure, sustainability, and local characteristics, providing a data foundation for targeted strategies. Based on these findings, the paper proposes micro-renovation strategies aimed at enhancing community functionality and improving residents' quality of life through refined management. The study underscores that, under the “ecological + digital” sustainable development framework, renewing old neighborhoods can address existing challenges while revitalizing cities towards smarter, greener, and more livable futures.

A universal set of mathematical qualities combine complexity with geometry to define “living geometry”. Those properties apply equally to organisms as to inanimate matter. A special type of geometry that merges approximate fractal structure with nested symmetries on all scales describes most biological and natural forms. Christopher Alexander discovered 15 geometrical properties in the context of architecture adapted to human feelings, and those provide a practical toolkit for creating living geometry in artifacts, buildings, and urban spaces. AI can be used to both validate the importance of living geometry for human health, and to evaluate architectural designs before and after they are built. Human beings evolved their neurological system to interpret living geometry defined by the ancestral natural environment, and the same interpretative reference is used to navigate today's built environment. This knowledge helps to understand how geometry affects cognition, emotions, and health. Asking large-language models about the best learning environments for creative thought produces a list of suggestions for renovating lecture and studio spaces in architecture schools. A severe disconnect between the contemporary urban experience and living geometry has negative effects on human health, intelligence, and the learning process. AI helps to completely rethink design aesthetics and design-making strategies.

The appropriation of autopoiesis in architecture 自创生在建筑中的运用

This study investigates the merits of the cross-disciplinary appropriation of the theory of autopoiesis in Patrik Schumacher's The Autopoiesis of Architecture. In this two-volume work, Schumacher builds upon Luhmann's sociological adoption of Maturana et al.’s biological theory of autopoiesis. This lineage of repeated appropriation raises questions about the merits of the cross-disciplinary appropriations of natural-scientific theory in architecture in general and the appropriation of autopoiesis in architectural theory in particular. Specifically, what are the merits of Schumacher's appropriation of the theory of autopoiesis? In this article, we develop and apply a text analysis method drawing on discourse analysis, close reading, visual interpretation, and “inference to the best explanation” to analyse a set of three pertinent samples from The Autopoiesis of Architecture. Our analysis, using previously established categorisations of language use and merits of theory appropriation, shows that Schumacher employs various modes of language use in The Autopoiesis of Architecture to reference both prior instances of autopoiesis. These ambiguities serve to achieve merits that, in many cases, seem to benefit the author rather than his readers.

Using social sensing to evaluate the effect of spatial planning: A case study of Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration in China 基于社会感知的空间规划效果评价——以长三角城市群为例

The increasing impacts of human activities on sustainable development have promoted the use of spatial planning as an essential policy tool to governing human activities patterns. However, the effect of spatial planning on such patterns remains insufficiently unexplored. In this study, we used Point of Interest (POI) data and spatial statistical methods to analyze the spatial patterns of human activities in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) Urban Agglomeration in China between 2018 and 2022, and then evaluated the conformance between these patterns with the planned spatial patterns outlined in the YRD Urban Agglomeration Development Plan. The results show that while the development plan is effective on promoting spatial integration of human activities, it has not fully achieved the intended patterns. Shanghai's prominence as a business center has strengthened over time, though its population and industrial centers have eroded. The Su-Xi-Chang metropolitan area illustrated a high level of spatial integration and has emerged as a key industrial function zone. However, many peripheral cities, including those in Anhui Province, northern Jiangsu Province, and southern Zhejiang Province, remain poorly integrated into the YRD Urban Agglomeration. To conclude, we recommend wider application of social sensing data on plan evaluation and highlight a diverse set of collaborative strategies to strengthen spatial integration between central and neighboring cities, as well as between metropolitan areas within the agglomeration.

Research on the spatial evolution process and reconfiguration pathway of mountainous cities based on the human-water relationship in river basins—A case study of Yichang City, Hubei Province, China 基于人水关系的流域山地城市空间演化过程与重构路径研究——以湖北省宜昌市为例

As the earliest geographical unit of human activities, river basins have nurtured civilizations with distinct local characteristics. The "human-water relationship" is a key aspect of "human-environment interaction," driving the evolution of urban and rural systems through human adaptation to water. Using Yichang as a case, this paper analyzes population and land use changes to explore the evolution of its "mountain-water-city" spatial pattern. Yichang grows incrementally along the river, forming a compact multi-cluster layout. At the same time, influenced by the significant and special event of the Three Gorges Project construction, the city has undergone rapid "leapfrog" development. Amid population mobility and river basin management needs, Yichang should use its "water" feature to integrate function, scale, and structure, focusing on water protection and utilization to ensure national and energy security. Secondly, amidst the general trend of declining total population and slowing growth, it is necessary to reasonably guide the aggregation and distribution of population within urban spaces based on the resource carrying capacity of each river basin. Finally, Yichang should break linear development inertia, focus on dual city centers, and redirect leading industries from rivers/roads to the eastern industrial city.

Experts question why cities, which are supposedly built for citizens, fail to address their social needs. Everyday life is challenging in our cities, especially because public spaces have generally been arranged and designed by considering the physical environment and without consideration for how these spaces should facilitate human interactions. This paper identifies “in-between spaces” as key scenarios for addressing this issue. These spaces offer the opportunity to feel comfortable and safe, foster a sense of community, and facilitate connections.
Little has been written about these spaces and, particularly, their characteristics. Therefore, the objective of this study is to provide a more in-depth understanding of in-between spaces by examining literature on such spaces throughout city history.
The results underscore the threshold character as the primary feature of in-between spaces and define various types of in-between spaces depending on their position within the gradient between public and private domains. The analysis also identified recurring characteristics, such as presence of reproductive labor, vegetation, or amenities, tendency to be programmed or unprogrammed within interior or exterior spaces and establishes relationships between these characteristics. Furthermore, the results suggest that the values promoted by these spaces and their recurring features can offer solutions to regenerate cities.

Study on the distance from green space and social capital of community residents based on the development of smart city—take the city of Lansing as an example 基于智慧城市发展的社区居民绿地距离与社会资本研究——以兰辛市为例

This paper innovatively adopts an interdisciplinary method, which is urban design, combined with social investigation, statistical analysis, and case analysis. In this study, 1350 residents in 45 blocks of Lansing were selected as samples to investigate the related issues of social capital, which include safety, contact with others, and sense of support for people living in certain areas. There are two ways to measure the distance from the center of the community to the nearest green space. One is the straight distance, while the other is path distance. Through statistical analysis, the path distance of less than 250 m is also added into the variables. The results overturned the hypotheses and showed that the distance of green space was positively correlated with social capital. The residents of Lansing may prefer the distant green space for recreational activities and create a way to participate in civic duty. The research can not only provide a basis for Lansing to formulate the appropriate resource management rules and norms and promote the accumulation of residents' social capital, but also provide a reference for urban green space planning in other areas. At the same time, in the context of developing a smart city and constructing a new public system, we hope that the better optimization of the green space allocation will be achieved.
