The aim was to evaluate the implementation of entrustable professional activities (EPA) to identify student perception of value and purpose to their learning. A framework and matrix were developed and implemented into a Sport and Exercise Sciences module of an undergraduate degree. Evaluation was completed through questionnaires and focus group interviews to identify students’ perceptions. Data were analysed and interpreted through content and thematic analysis. Statistical analyses were conducted to identify if significant differences existed in perceptions due to gender, awareness, and purpose, and a cluster analysis was used to identify commonalities in perceptions. Findings support a positive perception with students reporting the matrix was communicated well (80% agreement) and was easy to understand (93%), with clearly distinguished statements (97%) appropriately aligned to the profession. EPAs offer a well-structured, easy to use teaching and learning tool to aid student professional development with minimal barriers to its application in practice.

As event planning degree programs and courses continue to grow in popularity (Lamond & Platt, 2016), educators and scholars advocate for curriculum that complements the teaching of vocational skills with the study of theoretical and contextual material (Getz, 2002; Whitelaw & Wrathall, 2015). Incorporating perspectives from the field of critical event studies (CES) can help students better understand the societal impact of their operational decision making. This paper provides a case study of a group assignment that uses CES perspectives to examine critical issues in the industry. Students were able to make connections between topics, discuss the complexity of the issues, and consider next steps they could take as event planners. The majority of students felt that, in particular, the jigsaw style of presentations facilitated this kind of learning.

This study aims to analyze the backgrounds of the entrepreneurial behaviors of university students of the Degree of Physical Activity and Sports Sciences (DPASS), taking into account the differences based on sex, the existence of an enterprising family member and the socioeconomic level. Data was collected using an online survey with 181 third and fourth course DPASS students (127 men and 54 women). The results indicate that the sex and socioeconomic level do not influence entrepreneurial intention, while the existence of a family member close to the entrepreneurial community does influence it. From the University itself, spaces for knowledge and/or encounter of entrepreneurial subjects should be promoted that allow students to have close to them and to know of clear examples of entrepreneurship that can extrapolate their concerns, experiences and/or help them in the beginning of the business adventure.

Understanding the Dual Career as the process of combining the athletic career with an academic career or work, the main purpose of this paper is to study the current state of research on this reality. Based on this, a review of the scientific literature published in journals indexed on the Web of Science has been performed. This review consists of a bibliometric analysis, which provides basic bibliometric indicators, the co-authorship and keyword networks, and a thematic analysis of the search. Secondly, a systematic review of the most representative documents of each thematic cluster has been carried out. The results indicate that research on Dual Career is in an intermediate state, where there is a growing interest during the last years, and show that Europe is the main focus of research on this reality, despite the need of further research considering non-European terms to refer to this reality. The paper provides an overview of Dual Career research's current state and may serve as a starting point to guide future research, and help education and sport policy makers to develop better measures to facilitate student-athletes’ Dual Career.

The possible links between attendance and grades in higher education has been well researched, though less so within blended learning, or within sport and exercise science (SES) cohorts. This study explored the relationships between attendance, online course activity time, and the grades of SES cohorts during blended learning, throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Overall, both attendance and online course activity time were moderately (rs = 0.43, p < 0.05) and strongly (rs = 0.60; p < 0.05) correlated with grades. Monitoring online activity time may aid in the identification and management of students that are ‘at risk’ of achieving poor grades.

This timely paper explores the future of tourism and vocational career in the Covid-19 period from the perspective of undergraduate tourism students. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 30 students majoring in tourism faculty departments following the qualitative methodology. The findings demonstrate that vocational development and career planning in the Covid-19 era and the future of tourism are the main dimensions identifying students’ perspectives. The vocational and psychological pandemic effects are shaping the future career decisions of students. Furthermore, the future of tourism includes the elements related to tourist expectations and behaviours and trends in the (post-)viral tourism.

Contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda is vital for ensuring the future of our society. The sports sector presents opportunities through entrepreneurship to contribute to them. However, little is known about how Physical Activity and Sports Sciences (PASS) students through university education could develop a sustainable mindset to be an entrepreneur. This research analyzes the conditions that generate high and low levels of sustainable entrepreneurial intentions in PASS students. The sample comprises 374 PASS students, with a mean age of 20.80 years (SD = 3.19). A structured questionnaire was administered. The results indicate that it is essential that PASS students perceive themselves as capable of creating and managing a sustainable business efficiently (condition present in all solutions). In addition, they should possess high levels of social and civic values (most explanatory solution: 47% of cases). Besides, is important that they have a positive attitude towards sustainable entrepreneurship and they feel supported by their immediate environment (second most explanatory solution: 36% of cases). Finally, some practical implications for encouraging sustainable entrepreneurial intentions of PASS students are presented.

Pickleball is the fastest-growing sport for older adults in the United States. This study explored the impact exerted by service learning experiences on the mental health and ageist attitudes of undergraduates, as well as their stances on civic engagement. The study was conducted over five consecutive semesters between 2014 and 2016, with participants comprising 211 students enrolled in an event management course offered by a tourism department. All participating students were engaged in community-based service learning projects. Their service learning experiences were found to be associated with superior mental health and increased civic responsibility. The hosting of pickleball competitions for older adults by the undergraduate participants also possibly improved their mental health and reduced their ageism.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, the majority of higher education programs were delivered online and programs involving practical sessions were unable to deliver these activities on campus. This study explores the perspectives of students and staff from the sport department at a United Kingdom (UK) university. Undergraduate students (N = 21) and members of staff (N = 10) who taught on the same programs took part in online focus groups and one-to-one semi-structured interviews respectively. Thematic analysis was used to identify themes from the qualitative data. These themes are discussed in the context of pedagogical research and future practical recommendations.

Academics and universities pursue research productivity. The question of how to encourage quality research becomes essential for promoting the progress of knowledge, research management of universities, and career development of academics. Research motivation to conduct quality research has not yet been well addressed in the existing literature. This study adopted constructivist grounded theory to explore the research motivations of academics in tourism and hospitality in teaching-oriented universities. The findings from 32 semi-structured interviews from 16 universities in Mainland China (hereafter known as China) revealed the dynamics of research activities. This study expanded self-determination theory on research motivation scale (RMS). The axis of research motivations was constructed, with 11 subscales of research motivations, including “puzzle,” “vision,” “mission,” “metrics,” “weapon,” “ribbon,” “stage,” “gold,” “think tank,” “air” and “catalyst.”
