Background: The biochemical bone turnover markers for residual ridge resorption (RRR) are unclear. Therefore, the present study aimed to determine the biochemical bone turnover markers associated with RRR by comparing proteomics between the compressed mucosa of denture wearers and the non-compressed mucosa of non-denture wearers. Methods: The mucosal specimens of 11 complete-denture wearers were obtained from the alveolar ridge during surgical implant exposure for implant-retained overdentures. All denture wearers had been edentulous and worn dentures for at least 5 years. The tissues of 11 non-denture wearers were taken from the ridge during minor preprosthetic surgery. The mucosal proteins were extracted, purified, precipitated, and subsequently separated by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis for comparative proteomics. Differentially expressed proteins between the groups were analyzed by ANOVA using Progenesis SameSpots software. Results: Comparative proteomics analysis showed significant upregulation of 78 kDa glucose-regulated protein (GRP78; +2.2 fold, p = 0.015) and lumican (+1.8 fold, p = 0.005), as well as significant downregulation of heat shock protein 27 (HSP27; −1.9 fold, p = 0.029) in the denture group. Conclusions: Differential expression of the biochemical bone turnover markers of GRP78, lumican, and HSP27 may occur as a result of denture pressure on the mucosa. These markers may play important roles in RRR.

Background: Parents play an essential role in the prevention of home-related injuries among children. Traditionally, mothers provided direct overall care, whereas evidence on fathers' roles in children’s injuries is limited. This study assesses the differences between parents of children attending kindergarten regarding their knowledge and perception of home injuries and safety behaviors. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from January to April 2018 in 10 private kindergartens in the Selangor district in Malaysia. Self-administered questionnaires on sociodemographic data, knowledge of home injuries, perceptions toward home injuries, and safety behaviors at home were distributed. Descriptive and bivariate analyses were done to determine associated factors. Results: A total of 147 fathers and 182 mothers participated. Differences in parental knowledge, perception, and safety behaviors were not statistically significant (p > 0.05). A poor correlation existed between both knowledge (r = 0.099, p = 0.073) and perception (r = 0.207, p < 0.001) with behavior scores. Most parents regarded injuries involving children at home as unavoidable and perceived mild injuries as the norm. However, most parents agreed that monitoring children’s activities could reduce injury risk. Conclusions: Healthcare practitioners should promote safe behavioral practices to both parents equally to improve their children's knowledge and perception of home injuries.

Background: Ectodermal dysplasia is a complex group of genetic disorders identified through the abnormal development of ectodermal structures. It is a genetic disorder that affects the development or functions of tissues such as the teeth, hair, nails, and sweat glands. Methods: This review aimed to introduce the outcomes and increase awareness of ectodermal dysplasia reviewing by the literature. Results: The characteristic features of this disease, including hypodontia, hypohidrosis, and hypotrichosis, have been discussed. Conclusions: Ectodermal dysplasia is a heterogeneous group of hereditary disorders with similar clinical findings. It leads to the development of tissue malformations and affects the quality of life of the patient. This review demonstrates that dentists can provide viable and safe alternative conventional treatment modalities for oral rehabilitation in patients with ectodermal dysplasia.

Background : The behavior of seeking oral health information (OHI), especially the topic of sensitive teeth (ST), among the Indonesian adult population has rarely been studied. Hence, the current work aimed to analyze the characteristics of the Indonesian adult population who reported having ST and to explore their practice of self-medication in terms of their behavior of seeking OHI on the internet. Methods : A cross-sectional study was conducted between January and March 2021 in Indonesia. This study used a self-administered questionnaire comprising questions about sociodemographic data, oral health behavior, diet, and subjective oral health. Bivariate analysis based on a chi-square test was conducted for statistical evaluation. Results : Results showed that 63.3% of the respondents used Google, 24.5% used Instagram, and 24.2% used YouTube to search for OHI about ST. Most of them felt improvement with self-perceived medication, with YouTube (odds ratio [OR] = 5.13, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 2.26, 11.62), Google (OR = 2.94, 95% CI = 1.79 – 4.84), and Instagram (OR = 1.84, 95% CI = 1.11, 3.06) as their main OHI sources. Conclusions : Internet platforms provide information that helps adults to cope with their ST. Professionals should consider using internet-based interventions as a powerful tool for dental health education.

Background: Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) usually result from a prolonged static position and repetitive movements. A comfortable environment, appropriate working position, and multiple short breaks could alleviate MSDs. While the occasional back or neck ache is not a cause for alarm, regularly occurring pain or discomfort, if ignored, may further develop into an injury or career-ending disability. Methods: A total of 370 dentists were selected from two dental hospitals and multiple dental clinics in Lahore, Pakistan. Current MSDs were recorded with the Standardized Nordic Questionnaire (SNQ). Information sheets containing dental ergonomics and back and tendon-gliding exercises were distributed among the participants. The SNQ questionnaire was repeated after a 3month interval. Results: MSDs were found to be present in 59.5% of the clinicians surveyed. Males dentists were significantly more prone to MSDs than female ones (p <0.001), and senior dentists had significantly fewer MSDs than younger dentists. The intervention of ergonomic guidelines and exercises led to a reduction in MSDs among dental clinicians, with neck pain being significantly reduced (p = 0.003). Conclusions: MSDs affect the clinical practice of dental surgeons. Thus, incorporating more detailed ergonomics at the undergraduate level, along with the wider dissemination of correct dental postures, techniques, stretching, and rest to dentists, should be emphasized.
