Qualitative Research Interviewing: Typology of Graduate Students' Interview Questions 质性研究访谈:研究生访谈问题的类型

This paper is a corpus linguistics research that examined the typology of questions asked by graduate students who did papers that solely followed qualitative research interviewing.  Corpus linguistics is a methodological approach employed to analyze patterns of language use in naturally occurring texts. The paper investigated the breadth and structure of the interview questions and the unproductive questions found in the corpus. The corpus consisted of 7,516 interview questions examined following the structure-breadth-function typology of questions as a framework.  The corpus was analyzed by identifying the patterns of the interview questions for these to be properly typologized. Results revealed that Wh- questions (5,365 of the 7,516 questions or 71.381%) were the most frequently asked interview questions, followed by the yes-no questions (1,455 or 19.359%). Tell-Explain-Describe or TED questions (6 or 0.106%) had the least frequency of occurrence. Additionally, closed-ended questions (3,977 or 52.914%) were more prevalent than open-ended questions (3,539 or 47.086%).  While a total of 802 prefaced questions were identified with so-prefaced questions as the most pervasive (446 or 56.611%).  Finally, the study results showed that leading and multiple questions constituted the unproductive interview questions, the latter being the most preponderant with 700 or 55.556% of the 1,260 unproductive questions.  The subcategorizations yes-no and wh- leading questions; and multiple yes-no, multiple yes-no-wh-, and multiple wh- (serial and single) questions are nowhere to be found in the available literature on interview questions, thus adding to the value of the present study. The quality of qualitative research interviewing is facilitated by the typology of questions interviewers asked based on the structure and breadth of the questions. Generally, the wh- open-ended type is the more appropriate one in qualitative research interviewing.

Designing an Instructional Module for Classroom Teaching Based on the Multiple Intelligences Theory 基于多元智能理论的课堂教学模块设计

Lesson content needs active engagement to excite student interest. Teachers face challenges on student engagement in classroom teaching where learning has become procedural. This field study developed an instructional module integrating the 5Es method of instruction anchored on Howard Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences. Chislett’s multiple intelligence (MI) test was administered to Grade 7 students and the Science teacher for learning needs assessment determining their dominant multiple intelligences. The dominant MI of the students determined the enrichment activities incorporated in the 5E-MI instructional module and teaching method. During implementation, the teacher and the students were observed to assess the perceived usefulness of the module. The study established that the 5E-MI instruction module was a useful lesson planning method to increase students' engagement, who were observed to be attentive and participative during the implementation. Lesson planning was easier for the teacher since enrichment activities incorporated were guided by the dominant MI of the students. Through this study, educators are provided direction in incorporating MI in lesson planning and curriculum integration.

The Quality and Utilization of School Health Services of a State University in the Philippines 菲律宾国立大学学校卫生服务的质量与利用

Higher educational institutions are responsible for integrating the vital aspect of primary healthcare services in school settings. The study assessed the quality and utilization of school health services (SHS) of a state university in the Philippines. A descriptive-comparative and correlational study was utilized through a researcher-made questionnaire among 310 respondents using stratified random sampling. Generally, findings revealed that the level of quality of SHS is high, and the extent of utilization is great. It showed significant differences in the level of quality when grouped as to geographic clusters and the extent of utilization when grouped as to designation and geographic clusters. There is a positive correlation between the level of quality and the extent of utilization of SHS. Challenges encountered were the limited availability of health personnel and inadequate health supplies and equipment. Therefore, the higher the quality of SHS, the greater is the extent of utilization towards building a healthy university.

Algebraic Skills and Academic Achievement in Mathematics of Grade 7 Students in a Philippine Chinese School 菲华学校七年级学生数学代数技能与学业成绩

Mathematics achievement is an essential part of a student's academic achievement. However, teaching and learning mathematics is a significant concern in education, especially in distance learning.  This paper described the algebraic skill level and academic achievement in mathematics of Grade 7 students of a Chinese high school. Also, it determined the difference in their level of algebraic skills according to learning modality. It determined whether a significant relationship exists between algebraic skills and academic achievement. Using the researcher-made questionnaire and students' secondary data (average grade from the first quarter to the fourth quarter in Mathematics), mean, standard deviation, Kruskal-Wallis, and Spearman's rho were used. Results reveal that the level of algebraic skills were average while academic achievement levels were approaching proficient. No significant difference was found in their algebraic skills level according to learning modality. However, the significant low relationship was found between the students’ level of algebraic skills and academic achievement.

Academic Achievement in Algebra of the Public High School Students in the New Normal 新常态下公立高中学生代数学业成绩研究

This study describes the academic achievement level in Algebra of the public secondary school students in the new normal as a whole and when grouped according to sex and parent's highest educational attainment. Utilizing descriptive-comparative and correlational designs, the academic achievement level, significant differences and relationships among the variables, and the perceived learning difficulties in Quadratic Functions were determined using mean, Mann-Whitney, Kruskal Wallis, Chi-square test of association, Spearman rank correlation, and frequency and percentage distribution. Results showed that the academic achievement level was low; no significant difference and relationship between sex and academic achievement level; there was a significant difference and relationship between parent's highest educational attainment and achievement level, and students' top difficulty is transforming quadratic functions into the form f(x)=[a(x-h)^2]+k. Therefore, Algebra teachers, school heads, and parents should take necessary interventions to address the problem.

Implementation of Assessment Principles, Performance, and Client Satisfaction of Municipal Assessment Offices in Negros Occidental, Philippines 菲律宾西内格罗斯市评估办公室评估原则、绩效和客户满意度的实施

Accurate implementation of real property assessment principles strengthens real property taxation resulting in improved performance towards client satisfaction. This study assessed the implementation of assessment principles, the performance, and the satisfaction of clients of municipal assessment offices in Negros Occidental, Philippines.  It likewise determined the challenges encountered by offices.  A descriptive-comparative design was utilized using researcher-made survey instruments administered to assessors and randomly selected staff and clients. Using descriptive and inferential analyses, the findings revealed a very great extent of implementation with no significant differences across all areas when municipalities were grouped as to variables of income classification and land area. While the level of performance was outstanding as a whole, with no significant difference in all areas when grouped as to income class, a significant difference was revealed when assessment offices were grouped as to land area.  Clients were very satisfied with assessment services with no significant difference in physical setup when grouped into income classes. However, there were significant differences in frontline services, service quality, physical setup, and basic facilities. While when grouped as to land area, there was a significant difference across all areas. Several challenges were encountered by assessment offices, such as the agrarian reform program, administrative, policies, and political concerns. The study recommends a review of some policies specifically on the preparation and approval of the schedule of market value.

Primary healthcare is integral to the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) of ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being.  A descriptive study assessed the implementation of primary healthcare services in community health stations through a researcher-made questionnaire among healthcare providers and beneficiaries of 30 community health stations.  The results revealed that, as a whole, the implementation of primary healthcare services in community health stations is great, with maternal and child healthcare implemented to a very great extent while the treatment of non-communicable diseases to a great extent only.  The major challenges encountered are the lack of medical drugs, supplies and equipment, and medical professionals.  Primary healthcare has made contributions to the community's health improvement; however, challenges imply that the quality and efficiency of the services need improvement. The study contributed to new knowledge on implementing healthcare at the lowest level of government, emphasizing patient-centeredness.

Implementation of Public Employment Services in a Philippine Local Government Unit 在菲律宾地方政府单位实施公共就业服务

The Public Employment Service Office is responsible for implementing labor market programs to promote full employment and equality of employment services. This study assessed the level of implementation of the services of the public employment service office of a component city in the areas of local employment in terms of labor market information, referral and placement, career and employment coaching, provision of livelihood and employment programs, and special employment in terms of reintegration assistance, employability enhancement, pre-employment counseling, and other services as assessed by local and overseas jobseekers and local business and overseas employment agencies.  It also investigated the challenges encountered by the respondents in availing these services. This descriptive-comparative study used a researcher-made survey instrument administered to randomly selected local and overseas job seekers and local and overseas business and employment agencies.  Using descriptive and inferential analyses, the study yielded a very high level of implementation which implies that the services by the PESO promoted job generation and addressed unemployment although, a significant difference was revealed in the implementation of labor market information and self-employment programs and services. The study recommended the enactment of local laws to enhance employment facilitation.

Assessing Stakeholders’ Satisfaction of a Catholic University Graduate School in the Philippines 评估菲律宾天主教大学研究生院的利益相关者满意度

Students around the world pursue graduate education for their professional development, career promotions, and lifelong learning.  Seen as an investment, universities faced challenges with rising expectations and industry competitiveness on factors influencing satisfaction to improve graduate school service quality.  The paper aims to assess and compare the level of stakeholders' satisfaction of a Catholic University Graduate School in the Philippines using the 7Ps of a marketing framework, including the product, price, place, promotion, people, process, and physical evidence.  The study applied the quantitative research design using a descriptive and comparative approach.  The respondents were the 270 graduate school students, faculty members, and alumni determined using the simple random sampling method. A researcher-made questionnaire was used to gather data.  Percentage, mean, and standard deviation were used for the descriptive analysis. Meanwhile, the Mann-Whitney U-test was used to determine the significant differences in the level of satisfaction when the stakeholders are grouped according to their designation, academic programs, average monthly income, and employer. The findings showed that the overall level of satisfaction of the stakeholders of a graduate school in terms of the 7Ps of the marketing mix is high, with the product as the highest rating and price as the lowest. A significant difference was found in the level of satisfaction of the stakeholders when they are grouped according to the designation, academic program, family's average monthly income, and employment. The findings showed that the graduate school in the Catholic university offered good quality graduate education, has qualified and competent professors, has an accessible location, and has effective policies and procedures that exceed the expectations of the stakeholders.

The Quality and Challenges of Catholic Education among Parochial Schools in the Diocese of Kabankalan 卡班卡兰教区学校天主教教育的质素及挑战

Catholic education is a Catholic school’s way of participating in the Church’s evangelizing mission through holistic formation and conversion accordant with Catholic faith and doctrines. This descriptive comparative-correlational study determined the quality of Catholic education among parochial schools relative to the Philippine Catholic Schools Standards (PCSS) domains: Catholic identity and mission, leadership and governance, learner development, learning environment, and operational vitality. The 252 school personnel and 36 administrators of 18 parochial schools in the Diocese of Kabankalan, Philippines, for the School Year 2020-2021, answered the standardized PCSS survey questionnaire. The results showed that parochial schools are excellent relative to the offering of quality Catholic education. The findings also showed no significant difference in the level of quality of Catholic education among parochial schools when respondents are grouped according to designation and length of service. In addition, the quality of Catholic education does not correlate with the school budget and size.
