The article presents the results of the international project called ALL (Autonomous Language learning) based on Blended learning course and reports on the evaluation of its effectiveness through learners’ needs analysis at the initial stage of the implementation of a new approach, their feedback and evaluation of learning achie- vements at the end of the course. The paper also describes a new teacher’s role in this innovative teaching method while using a specially designed virtual learning environment such as the website developed in this project – a platform for teachers and learners which enables teachers to communicate online with students and students with students.

The present paper deals with the problem of teaching culture in the foreign language classes at all levels of education. Cultural studies should not be separated from the language syllabus and foreign language learning should not be limited to formal learning of systems of sounds, words, and syntactic structures, but should also include learning the culture of the target language. Success in intercultural communication depends greatly on the understanding of a number of cultural features. The article emphasizes the importance of teaching and learning target culture, as well as introduces the analysis of cultural scripts and small talk in English, Russian and Polish languages. Understanding the cultural differences will benefit and facilitate cross-cultural communication under diverse circumstances. Thereby, this issue is relevant to foreign language and ESP classes focusing on the improvement of both students’ language and cultural skills.

The article presents the kaleidoscopic view on the concept of metacognition. There are a lot of implications showing the link between metacognitive skills, learning and teaching. Metacognitive skills such as self-direction, self-evaluation, and self-control, as well as orientation, planning, monitoring, testing, diagnosing, repairing, evaluation and reflection play an important role in facilitating the process of transition from teacher-centered environment to autonomous foreign language studies. Synthetic Cognitive Apprenticeship m odel is suggested as possible way to help students enhance their metacognitive skills thus becoming more prepared for autonomous foreign language studies.

The present article focuses on the study of concessive particles in Modern English. Considering the linguistic research done, the need to further develop the theory of particles from the communicative-functional approach, to define their functions and determine semantic and pragmatic peculiarities in the text is evident. Particles are important means of both natural speech and indirect speech acts formation. Besides, they influence the utterance semantics. Understanding the peculiarities of particles‘ semantics and pragmatics will undoubtedly benefit the communication process. Hence this subject is most topical to the language teaching.

The present article, which is based on conducted research data, analyzes an attitude of schoolchildren, teachers and parents towards the reasons of schoolchildren’s aggressive behaviour, its frequency and forms. Different factors and motives that stimulate the aggressiveness of schoolchildren, who go to the city, village and different professional (arts and technology) schools are examined. Schoolchildren’s approach towards violence against school fellows and themselves is being discussed, as well as reaction of teachers and parents to this phenomenon. The article reveals opinion of schoolchildren, teachers, and parents about the means used to prevent violence towards schoolchildren and existing ways that can be used to make preventive means to be more effective.

This paper aims at examining students’ attitudes to application of Information and Communication Techno- logy for improving listening skills through online dictation. Dictation has been used in language testing for a long time, but its benefit in language teaching / learning has never been discussed by language teachers. This article is an attempt to put a useful but now undervalued technique back in the language teaching activities. However, there is no data on usefulness of dictation at university level. The research methods include students’ responses to a specially designed questionnaire. The participants in this study are students of two different specializations who study English for Specific Purposes at the Faculty of Social Policy, Mykolas Romeris University, Lithuania. Our study shows that class dictations of authentic materials are beneficial to students at tertiary level as they help improve listening and writing skills and raise awareness of problematic language areas. Statistical processing by means of the SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) has proved that the findings are valid beyond the studied sample. The advice for language teachers is to employ the online dictation technique in language classroom in a way that is beneficial to students.

Assessment and evaluation are among the essential functions performed by an educator. What is more, they are closely related to the communication of the teaching process efficiency in terms of verification of learner and educator expectations, determination of learning and teaching quality achievement, and generalization of educational activities. The present study aims at the analysis of assessment techniques applied in the master degree linguistic studies. Initially, a brief theoretical overview of both formal and informal assessment me- thods is provided, with the focus on their distinctive features and ways of application in the light of Bloom’s taxonomy and Dublin description representing the competence requirements set for the gain of definite skills. Further, the results of the survey (conducted at Kaunas Faculty of Humanities, Vilnius University) are described. Finally, the eligible assessment techniques serving the purpose of efficient educational process in the second-cycle study process are identified.

In the article, the theoretical status of infinitive constructions um zu, ohne zu, statt zu in the German language and principal aspects of their analysis in scientific linguistic literature are discussed: division of infinitive constructions with regard to valency, latent subject, relation of infinitive constructions with subordinate clauses, variants of meaning of these constructions and conditions of usage. The attention is drawn to the fact that in the majority of grammars, usage of infinitive constructions in specialized and scientific texts is mentioned indirectly or only in connection with the impact of these constructions on the text condensation/brevity. This article aims at the more comprehensive analysis of non-valency-determined infinitive constructions um zu, ohne zu, statt zu in specialized and scientific German texts on the basis of works by G. Helbig, O. Leys and S. Zifonun. The conjunction infinitive constructions um zu, ohne zu, statt zu is chosen as the subject matter due to the frequent occurrence in the texts under analysis, the multifunctionality and variety of its transformation opportunities. In this work, the variants of meaning of non-valency-determined infinitive constructions um zu (semantic aspect) and conditions of usage (pragmatic and cognitive aspects) are integrated, and the transformation of this syntactic phenomenon to other syntactic constructions.

In modern society teachers experience a significant increase in psychological as well as physical violence of pupils, which, consequently, aggravates the overall educational process and demotivates teachers to carry out their duties properly. On the basis of the research carried out, the article analyses feelings of teachers working in schools of different types and their reaction to experienced insecurity. It is shown that the manifestation of teachers’ insecurity experienced at schools of different types is different: teachers of primary schools suffer from economic insecurity the most, teachers of basic schools suffer from economic and psychological insecurity, and teachers of secondary schools and gymnasiums suffer from psychological insecurity.
