The theory of standard languages is closely linked with the standardization policy and prevailing ideology. The language ideology comprises its value, experience and convictions related to language usage and its dis - course being influenced at institutional, local and global levels. Recently, in the last decades, foreign linguists have linked the theories of the development of standard lan- guages and their ideologies with an ecolinguistic approach towards language standardization phenomena. The article is based on Einar Haugen ’s theory about the development of standard languages and ecolinguistic statements and presents the stages of developing the standard language as well as the factors having an influ - ence on them. In conclusion, a strong political and social impact has been made on the development of the standard Lithuanian language. The stages of the progress of the standard Lithuanian language have rapidly changed each other, some have been held very close to one another and some still have been taken part.

The paper provides analysis of linguistic aspects of the lithuanisation of smartphone operating systems (An - droid and Windows Phone) and their adaptation for work in the Lithuanian linguistic environment. Having analysed the data of lithuanisation of smartphones, it was established that the aforementioned operating systems could be attributed to partially localised OS. Furthermore, the comparative analysis of linguistic localisation of operating systems in question showed that there were considerably more flaws in linguistic localisation of Android OS than those of Windows Phone OS. Windows Phone OS texts were evaluated as more corresponding to the norms of standard Lithuanian language. Most of the terms used in both Android OS and Windows Phone OS are included in the approved terminology sources. Unapproved, inaccurate, liter- ally translated terms, and non-standard loanwords constituted only a minor part of all terms used in OS texts.

Students’ perceptions of difficulties in speaking on professional issues are in the focus of the present article. It is generally assumed that the skill of speaking a foreign language is very difficult to master, while speaking on professional topics involves such difficulties as the usage of specific vocabulary and ability to deal with listeners’ oncoming arguments. The aims of the current research are to investigate learners’ attitudes to the level of difficulty in speaking activi - ties on a subject matter at university and apply an innovative approach to improving their speaking skills. The methodology applied was focused on guided individual learning (GIL), with gradually increasing amount of spontaneity in public talks on the subject matter, starting with prepared short talks on an ESP issue leading to group discussions; moving on to Power Point presentations, involving spontaneous deviations from the subject and followed by question time; further, adding some complex subject matter, such as a discussion on a problematic professional subject suggested by learning materials; and, eventually, speaking impromptu on an issue, with a high level of control of one’s speaking skills. The research method of the learners’ attitudes employed the survey on learner attitudes to four different speaking activities in the classroom, which included short talks, Power Point Presentations, discussions and speaking impromptu. The questionnaire was administered to students of two different specializations by the end of the semester. The respondents were students who studied Psychology and Social Work at the Faculty of Social Policy, at Mykolas Romeris University in Vilnius, Lithuania. The respondents were asked to indicate the degree of difficulty they had with the various speaking activities on the Likert’s scale ranging from “very difficult” (1) to “very easy” (5). The results indicated that perceptions of difficulties to developing speaking skills depended, on the one hand, on students’ chosen specialization: students of Psychology were more positive about speaking activities than students of Social Work. The differences of opinions might be caused by the level of proficiency in General English which influences the performance in professional language. On the other hand, the responses depended on the type of assignments: students felt more confident with themselves if they invested more individual learning time for their assignments. By the end of the semester, students self-assessed their achievements in improving speaking skills by contributing written reflections to individual weblogs. The analysis of contributions suggests the usefulness of the approach to perfecting professional speaking skills.

The article examines the methods applied by graduate master’s degree students of the Faculty of Civil Engineering of Vilnius Gediminas Technical University for the purposes of using knowledge of language for specific purposes in the work and study environment. Their linguistic situation is ambivalent: they act in the academic environment, and therefore the used language has to meet academic requirements; on the other hand, most of them are adapting to the linguistic environment at work. Thus, master’s degree students are able to view the subject of language for specific purposes and the knowledge and skills gained from a practical perspective. With the help of a questionnaire and an interview, the article is aimed at assessing the experience of applying the knowledge gained by the students who completed a course on language for specific purposes 2–5 years ago. The article analyses both academic and practical applications regarding knowledge of language for specific purposes. Extralinguistic factors are taken into account when examining why employed master’s degree students do not always use what they have learnt. The problems of the practical application of knowledge are closely related to the cultural situation; hence, the relevant issues of the postmodern epoch are discussed. The paper explores the interconnection of the practical application of knowledge that covers economic and political factors and globalisation. The study focuses on the academic application of knowledge about the language for specific purposes. Attention is paid to dangers posed for the youth language by the predominance of information technologies in higher education institutions. The article analyses how employed master’s degree students evaluate the course on language for specific purposes and the linguistic revision of MA theses, as well as explores how the knowledge provided meets their needs.

The article discusses the terminology used in J. Levan‘s book “Autovežimis”, published in 1940 (hereinafter in the text referred to as abbreviation A), particularly the terminology (of both transportation and other terms) used in transportation sphere (mainly in physics and chemistry). The authors review simple and complex terms, analyse expression of synonymous terms. The 3rd Chapter of the book presents terms that have not been preserved or their forms have altered over time with the aim of determining the terms that replaced them. Identified current terms in the text are written in quotes, quoted from sources: Kalbos…(2005); Katalynaitė et al. (1995); Keinys et al. (2000); Vaitkeviciūtė (2007); Žitkutė (1996). Terms from the Term Bank of Lithuanian State Language Commission are provided as well (Source: Gaivenis et al. 2000; Geleževicius et al. 2004; Palenskis et al. 2007; Svencianas et al. 2004; Valiukėnas et al. 2006). Determination of terms meaning is based on the vehicle design and systems schemes and diagrams given in Giedra et al. (2006). The edition presents authentic language.
