Cracking India (1991), considered the most remarkable novel by the Pakistani-American writer of Parsi descent Bapsi Sidhwa, focuses on the historical event of the Partition that took place in 1947, which divided the Indian subcontinent into the countries of India and Pakistan. The plot is substantially gynocentric and recounts the horrors of this territorial, political and social conflict and depicts how women were objectified not only from a sexual perspective, but also as trophies of power and humiliation on the enemy side. The aim of this article is to explore the concepts of shame and guilt in power relations, by applying the affect theory from a gender perspective.

Language teaching as a discipline of Translation and Interpreting must be based on comparative linguistics, since the contrastive study of language is key to being able to study in depth both the aspects that unite and differentiate the languages, in our case Spanish-German. One of its greatest challenges is the internalisation of phraseology with the aim of transmitting the (re)cognition of phraseological units for their eventual translation. In this article we show the current state of research in this respect, as well as practical examples of some resources and strategies involved in the teaching of phraseology and grammar for translation and interpreting from a cognitivist perspective.

Due to the fact that teaching colloquial expressions has become a real need in SFL classrooms, in this paper a semantic and pragmatic analysis is carried out about the colloquial expression marrón based in its coappearances in the corpus CORPES XXI. This corpus has been chosen since the aim is to study real and present-day examples of that colloquial expression in Mainland Spain. To that end, a quantitative methodology is used by means of a corpus of 155 co-appearances of the Spanish term marrón used as a colloquial expression and its derived expressions that present the structure (verb + marrón) in order to know the most frequent co-appearances of such word so that these examples can be taught in the SFL classroom. Once the quantitative study has been established, the semantic and pragmatic analysis are carried out of the colloquial expression marrón.

This paper analyses the young adult novel The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate (2009) by Jacqueline Kelly, and its translation into Spanish. From a feminist approach, it will be studied whether references criticising gender inequality have been maintained or even highlighted (von Flow, 1991). The implementation of Marco Borillo’s functional analysis (2001) and Brunette’s assessment criteria (2000) will enable us to conclude that not all nuances have been respected in certain translation strategies. This fact results in slightly modifying the writer’s intention, which does not seem really correct as the novel introduces the evolution of a brave girl who wants to become a female scientist in 1899, and who does not understand traditional social conventions.

The present investigation is an exercise in historical lexicology working with a group of voices with the usual coinage of Americanisms and the objective is to examine whether from the diasystem or from synchrony they can be understood, precisely. The methodology consists of two parts: first being a process of collation and lexical filtering with some linguistic tools in Spanish such as dictionaries, linguistic monographs and linguistic corpus and second being strictly lexicological-lexicographical phase, where semantics, polysemy and possible homonymy are explored. The information collected, therefore, comes from the textual level, which is why, most often, found data may contradict Spanish as a fact of architecture or official lexicography. In short, these units are a group of voices neither exemplary or standard nor provincial relative to the standard language.

Resilience has emerged as an individual skill and a social value due to dramatically increasing social inequality, becoming extremely popular in academic contexts and more recently in SSL teaching. This article intends to analyze resilience origin and its use in educational literature, characterize the concept resilient subject and detect the implications of its use by using neoliberal logic to define the discourses of resilience and their effects in the L2 Spanish classroom using a decolonial feminist approach through the concept of “colonial/modern gender system” in neoliberal nation-states. Results show that resilience present in educational literature is framed within neoliberal paradigm perpetuating unequal power relations.

The current study consists of an analysis of the words fajana, delta lávico and isla baja. The treatment of the three lexical units were observed and analysed in academic lexicography (RAE [Royal Spanish Academy] and ASALE [Association of Spanish Language Academies]) and regional lexicography (Academia Canaria de la Lengua [Canarian Academy of the Language]) in order to establish a starting point for comparison the results of an analysis of the frequency of use of these volcanological terms in the Canarian press between October and December 2021, the period of activity of the Cumbre Vieja volcano (La Palma). The most frequent terms used by the media were the lexical units delta lávico and fajana. Based on this fact, an amendment of the lexicographical article on fajana is proposed.
