This article analyses the reasons used to incorporate new words to the language and the dictionary, reasons that oscillate between need and usage, and around which other criteria emerge, such as prestige, opportunity, and good grammatical formation. Purist tendencies and, above all, a desire to defend the unity of the language, owing to the danger of fragmentation, lead some authors to invoke the criterion of need; in contrast, others, supporters of innovation, defend the criterion of usage, not educated usage, but rather frequent and general usage.

This article aims to present the use of yeismo as a means of characterization in Spanish comic strips of the twentieth century. My study is based on the observation of this phenomenon in such comic strip writers asMari Benejam i Ferrer, Manuel Vazquez Gallego, Francisco Ibanez Talavera, Alejandro Maria Estivill (Nene Estivill), Jose Penarroya Penarroya, Joan Rafart i Roldan (Raf) and Joaquin Cera Barrios. The Catalan sociolinguistic context stands out as a determining factor.

Orature in Africa has played a vital role through millennia as a(n only) medium to preserve and transmit the history, culture and imagery of each community. The griot clearly represents the performer of oral arts, but has experienced severe changes in their way of life and the narrative resources available to them. From the time of the patronage of the ancient great kings to the arrival of Islam, colonialism and, finally, the processes of modernization and westernization, griots have been forced to adapt to new patrons, new audience demands and new mass media, and they have lately become politicians or showbiz stars. The appearance of rap and hip-hop from the US claiming to be the “modern griots” has brought about both critical response and viral attraction to this new phenomenon, whether it be a new genre or a reinvention of the ancient griot’s orature.

This article examines the structural criteria of the proem of Dionysius’ Roman antiquities, with special attention to their relation with the author’s ideas about the general proem of Thucydides. It also pays attention to the phrase, in order to define the stylistic rules of the proem and its place in the literary polemic of Dionysius’ time.

Contemporary poetry, and its capacity to enter into a constant dialogue with different traditions and periods, contains interesting readings of Platonic philosophy. These readings, which can be traced in the work of such writers as Aurora Luque, Chantal Maillard, Maria Sanz, Josefa Parra or Alberto Tesan, revitalize Classical thought in the contemporary scene.
