In this study the hedonic price method is applied to evaluate the externalities diffused by a landscape of extraordinary beauty consisting in natural resources and historic/artistic villas on the coast of Posillipo in Naples. The construction of hedonimetric curves is proposed as an approach to assess economic value of the landscape at Posillipo. The functions related to these curves derive from a plurality of hedonic prices, linked to the panorama and to the quality of historic/artistic villas that arise on the coastal strip between via Posillipo and the sea.

This study addresses, with reference to the landscape, a precise request of the EU to quantify the benefits of public expenditure in agriculture. It analyses the implications on rural landscape of some measures of the Common Agricultural Policy at a regional level, taking the Rural Development Programme (RDP) 2007-2013 of the Veneto Region, in north-eastern Italy, as case study. A choice experiment (CE) is applied to value four measures of the RDP that directly affect the landscape characteristics. The CE results point out that the landscape benefits of the measures in the Veneto RDP are higher than the subsidies paid to farmers for the provision of services that improve landscape quality. The CE results suggest the opportunity to rethink the distribution of the subsidies.

This position paper critically analyses the process to implement the UNESCO Recommendation on the Historic Urban Landscape (2011), exploring evaluation tools, innovative business / management models and financing tools for the conservation and regeneration of Historic Urban Landscape (HUL), to make it operational in the perspective of a circular economy model of sustainable development for city / territory system regeneration. Through evaluation tools, it is possible to pass from general principles to operational practices; to produce empirical evidence of the economic, social and environmental benefits of HUL integrated conservation and regeneration. The challenge of generating a symbiosis between conservation and transformation issues requires adequate evaluation methods, business, management and financing tools, engaging civil society and local stakeholders, capturing both HUL tangible and intangible values to turn the historic urban landscape into a driver of sustainable growth. The analysis carried out in this paper shows that through the suggested tools it is possible to make operational the UNESCO Recommendations, transforming conflicts into opportunities, producing economic attractiveness and strengthen social awareness and cohesion.

The paper aims at isolating factors affecting farmland rents and estimating their effect using hedonic pricing model. Unlike the majority or similar analysis, based on Census aggregated data or surveys, we used a sample of microdata based on land rent contracts signed in the Province of Mantova over the period 2010-2014, matched with other territorial or census databases. We focused on the effect of farmland use on rent price, estimating their implicit values, i.e. the shadow prices. The research findings may help stakeholders and researchers interested in rental market dynamics, in particular at local level. Empirically grounded and transparent information on rental market may provide a new tool for contract negotiation among owners and tenants, improving, at the same time, farmers’ choices.

Assessing the sustainability of urban agro-food systems is strictly linked with food provision capacities. Especially in metropolitan regions, where agriculture is continuosly under pressure, deepening economic and policy implications of structural changes is particularly important. In this perspective, the paper proposes the use of an optimization model to indicate how reconciling agricultural activities and compliance with food demand at regional level. The approach relies on a scenario analysis carried out through a linear programming model. With regard to the Milan metropolitana area, five scenarios are performed, related to either different productive capacities or dietary habits, and the optimal allocation of agricultural resources in response of such modifications is returned.

Carbohydrates establish the third alphabet of life. As part of cellular glycoconjugates, the glycans generate a multitude of signals in a minimum of space. The presence of distinct glycotopes and the glycome diversity are mapped by sugar receptors (antibodies and lectins). Endogenous (tissue) lectins can read the sugar-encoded information and translate it into functional aspects of cell sociology. Illustrated by instructive examples, each glycan has its own ligand properties. Lectins with different folds can converge to target the same epitope, while intrafamily diversification enables functional cooperation and antagonism. The emerging evidence for the concept of a network calls for a detailed fingerprinting. Due to the high degree of plasticity and dynamics of the display of genes for lectins the validity of extrapolations between different organisms of the phylogenetic tree yet is inevitably limited.

We study the relationship between urban spatial structure and land use fragmentation in the Functional Urban Area (FUA) of Milan to understand if and how the urban morphology influences the patterns of land use at the metropolitan scale. Using Exploratory Spatial Data Analysis, we find that the spatial structure of the urbanisation in the study area follows the traditional monocentric distribution in the south while multi-centricity characterises the north to the largest extent. Findings suggest clearly that different urban spatial structures lead to diverse patterns of land use. In particular, it appears that the degree of discontinuity of residential areas is lower in the presence of secondary sub-centres compared to the mono-centric distribution.

In this paper a heuristic evaluation of irrigation water is carried out using the hedonic pricing method of sales comparison approach – SCA. A comparison between irrigated and rain-fed farmland is performed. Due to the incomplete information on the land market, the analysis is based on survey conducted on a group of 118 farmers. The assessment of irrigation water value and the supply guarantee is carried out on the farmland area of the Reclamation and Irrigation board of Capitanata (Apulia region).

This essay deals with the concepts of wellness and landscape, analyzing the role of landscape in defining the life quality of rural areas inhabitants on the base of the results of the “Scientific collaboration between Communication Strategies Lab (CSL) of the University of Florence and Tuscany Region for the introduction of generative communication in the Rural Development Programme 2014-2020”. The scientific collaboration represented a valuable opportunity to study and test communication strategies in order to improve life quality in rural areas, and to confirm the generative communication paradigm (Toschi 2011) as an operative model that is able to promote circular relations between man and its territory.

In recent years, the cliffs along the coastal stretch of Melendugno are being interested by coastal erosion. For its environmental, landscape and tourist value, the local authorities are planning several actions to be implemented in the short, medium and long term as part of one of the five regional projects included in the new Territorial Landscape Plan of Apulia. The paper aims to verify the effective interest of residents and tourists in the province of Lecce towards the renovation and upgrading projects for the cliffs of Melendugno through the choice experiment (CE). Such an approach could also define economic and fiscal incentives, as well as improve measures in order to promote bottom-up initiatives, with positive effects on the governance of the shores of Salento.
