Monetary metric is useful whenever it is necessary a cost/benefit assessment that implies a change of the degree of individuals and families well-being. The work is devoted to investigate and assess the impact of Environmental and Social Quality (ESQu) on Subjective Well-Being (SWB) at regional scale, keeping under control the individual heterogeneity. After a brief introduction, the application of the Life Satisfaction Approach (LSA) on a large data-base of Italian official statistical source, allows establishing the operative practicality of this method through monetization of the impact of some externalities. In this direction and by way of an example, some regional differentials, in terms of environmental and social benefits-costs, are highlighted and their impact on GDP is estimated.

Rural areas are characterised by having a myriad of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) with generally low levels of knowledge, more concerned about day-to-day survival than long-term sustainable development strategies. In order to encourage rural development, multi-stakeholder networks involving Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) have been recognized as the best way to use existent resources and stimulate interaction and knowledge exchange. On the other hand, the presence of heterogeneous stakeholder groups marked by distinctive set of values and ideologies make cooperation in rural areas harder. Given these premises, this paper aims at determining what roles universities can assume in multi-stakeholder networks, in order to support materialisation of sustainable development.

The aim of the paper is to provide support to an evaluation in urban planning, creating a useful approach for the choice of future alternative Operational Plans in Cava De’ Tirreni (Salerno). They represent planning tools that are usually formed after public announcements to select the interventions to be implemented in the areas of transformation identified by the general Municipal Urban Plan. A suitable system of territorial indicators to verify the achievement of such goals is also taken into account. With reference to three different urban areas, the evaluation has been carried out by Multi-Criteria Decision Aid (MCDA), using the PROMETHEE (Preference Ranking Organisational Method for Enrichment Evaluation) multi-criteria method and GAIA (Graphical Analysis for Interactive Aid) tool.

A recent directive gives Member States the freedom of choice in relation to the cultivation of genetically modified seeds, recognizing an achieved flexibility to realize economic goals at geographical level according to territorial differences and cultural orientations. In fact, the scope of cultivation adjustment is the result of a process of cooperative regulation legitimized by the role that retains the European Commission. It is, therefore, to exclude a real tipping of power relationships in the European integration design of the States, but there are the conditions for increased awareness of citizens through participatory processes to expected changes in terms of health and environment able to put at stake the intervention of the national legislature.

The need for an efficient Transport System (TS) is widely recognized as an important factor of a successful program of tourism development, but little work has been made to investigate the impact of TS on Cultural Heritage Tourism (CHT). This is one of the most recognized and investigated forms of tourism but, unfortunately, there is a fragmentation in the research field that does not allow a full comprehension of existing relationships between TS, CHT, and tourist experience. In this light, the work tries to evaluate the economic impact of the on-site vs. long-distance transports, in a scenario where tourism public policies are not adequately developed. The analysis is based on CHT access data and economic information on travel costs managed with the help of a large data set coming from the Cultural Observatory of Piedmont Region (Italy).

In Basilicata region there is a considerable amount of unused wood as well as the capacity to use it as feedstock for the production of bioenergy. Thus, the supply of renewable energy could be increased through greater utilization of forest biomass. However, for a better planning of the production and processing chain, the energy and forestry sectors require better estimates of the availability of unused roundwood and residues. The aim of the research was the development of a model for the spatial evaluation of biomass quantities obtainable from forestland. The results obtained point out a) significant amounts of biomass distributed on most of the territory; b) good opportunities related to white certificate trading and c) potential of business creation, entrepreneurship and local employment.

The Val di Noto is an area characterized by historical, cultural, architectural and urban heritage that belonging to the WHL, but also, by other highly qualified resources of the environmental, agricultural, social and political-institutional type. An strategic planning approach may help to create a coordinated and sustainable development for all the territorial components and, therefore, may generate a sustainable socioeconomic development. In particular, in the era of globalization, the territorial marketing has a new field of action, the internet marketspace, and new tools to support the marketing actions by the Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). The study proposes a methodological approach to analyze the efficiency of the web marketing in the Management Plan of the area.

The rurality index has been explored using Spatial Statistical Techniques, Multicriteria Decision Support System and Cluster Analysis to obtain areas with homogenous characteristics. The profile outlined is an effective tool to support decision-makers in defining actions aimed to the development of rural areas, in view of a global rationalization and optimization of resources. To check the consistency of results, the model was tested within Basilicata region, which is well-known to the authors and which has been extensively investigated with regard to its levels of rurality. The results show eight homogeneous areas, classified in relation to the Rural Index. The results obtained enable locating resources based on specific needs.

This study analyzes the “Sewage and refuse disposal and sanitation” industry (Waste) as a producer of services able to break down its negative externalities and transform them into an asset flow for competitive advantage. The conceptual lens used is the resource-based view (R-BV) of the firm and in particular its spill-over, the “natural” R-BV. For EU-27 countries of the last decade, the Ghosh’s input-output model is applied to identify the valuable relationships concerning sale intermediate trade contacts (ITC). Furthermore Gini index and Lorenz curve demonstrate that Waste resource is quite concentrated and thus rare. This result suggests the necessity of developing initiatives aiming to strengthen the partnership between businesses, enhancing the sale-network profitability.

This paper aims to explore the existence of a potential interdipendence among the level of territorial vulnerability and the distribution of local conflicts in the Lombardy Region (Italy), through an empirical analysis based on the overlay mapping of different informative layers. In order to explore this kind of relationship, a Vulnerability Index has been calculated according to the most recent conceptual and analytical frameworks developed in the research literature. The outputs of the vulnerability assessment has been put into thematic maps with the aim of providing a comprehensive overview of the environmental and socioeconomic state of the Lombardy Region and tackling questions such as which provinces are most vulnerable to the localization of new infrastructures.
