Summary Between Panegyric and Factual Report. Structure and Purpose of „Media Events“ at the Time of Maria Theresa This paper examines three decisive historical events that took place during the reign of Maria Theresa of Austria. It considers them as „media events“ comprising the birth of Joseph, the heir to the throne (1741), the Battle of Kolin (1757) and Maria Theresa’s recovery from smallpox (1767). In general, media events during the early modern period point to the construction of messages not merely confined to imparting information. The intrinsic aim of this paper is to analyse the political and historical dimension and both the structure and dynamics of the three media events in terms of their visual and textual genres. Furthermore, the paper refers to performative practices and examines the public information strategies of the players involved. The birth of Archduke Joseph, the first son of Maria Theresa, is remarkable given the public’s wide involvement in the celebrations. In particular, the i...

Summary The Pressure and Print of an Event. Contemporary Accounts of the Battle of Luetzen 1632 and their Media Dynamic The Battle that took place near the small town of Luetzen in the vicinity of Leipzig in Saxony on 6 November 1632 has often been described as one of the main battles of the Thirty Years War. It pitted a Protestant Swedish Army commanded by King Gustavus Adolphus against the Catholic Imperial forces led by Albrecht von Wallenstein, Duke of Friedland. Considering its immediate and its long-term military-political consequences this battle may not have been one of the decisive events of the Thirty Years War. But it can, nonetheless, be considered as one of the key events in this war. It was the resonance, which it found in the contemporary media and the symbolic-political importance accorded to it by contemporaries, that made the battle of Luetzen of special importance. This extraordinary resonance was to a great extent due to a dramatic personal moment, the death of the Swedish king on the ...

Summary The Double-Edged Sword of Pacifism. The Bible as a Resource in 17th-Century Political Discourse Using the Example of the Early Quakers The article engages with recent work about the biblical legitimation of violence in pre-modern Europe and with research on the Quakers. It aims to add nuances to the hypothesis that passages of the Apocalypse were among the most popular biblical texts used for the legitimation of violence, and discusses two examples from 17th-century England. The “Door of Hope”, which has ties to Thomas Venner’s revolt, uses passages of the Apocalypse to propagate violent political rebellion. The “Quaker Peace Testimony”, on the other hand, uses some of the same biblical passages to propagate absolute pacifism. As this comparison shows, the mere selection of certain biblical passages says little about how a text uses those passages in its argument; a more in-depth analysis is necessary. Such an analysis also shows that the pacifism of the “Quaker Peace Testimony” does not only resu...

Summary Gentz and Stein. The Relationship of Two Opposites at the Congress of Vienna Of nearly the same age, but of different social and regional origin, Friedrich Gentz and Baron Karl vom Stein first met in the late 1790 s when they were both in Prussian service and had similar political convictions. But it was a difficult relationship from the very beginning because of their fundamentally different ways of life and social conduct. When they met again in Vienna they were both now in the service of non-Prussian states: Gentz, the Austrian „Secretary of Europe“, was a key figure at the Congress, whereas Stein, the adviser of the Russian Emperor, had a rather modest role. Furthermore, they had quite opposite convictions as far as the future of Germany and Europe was concerned. They met very rarely and incidentally at one of the numberless social gatherings convened by other representatives, but refused to discuss their political opinions and viewpoints in any real dialogue. The liberal positions Stein fough...

Summary Hostage-Taking and -Giving at the Cultural Borders of the Early Modern Russian Empire This paper examines practices of hostage-taking and -giving in the early-modern Russian Empire as practiced since the late 16th century in the regions of Siberia, the Far East and on the Russian Steppe frontier. The paper investigates the origins of this practice, its cross-cultural meanings and its symbolical and practical issues. The political, legal and cultural situation of indigenous hostages in the Russian frontier fortresses is discussed. The Russian hostage system is compared with practices of hostage-taking and -giving in other pre-modern cultures, such as in Ancient Rome, pre-modern China and the European Middle Ages.
