The stenopodidean shrimp Chicosciencea pernambucensis Bochini, Cunha, Terossi & Almeida, 2020 was described as a new genus and species from northeastern Brazil based on morphological and molecular assessments. J. Goy nevertheless proposed that Chicosciencea Bochini, Cunha, Terossi & Almeida, 2020 is a subjective synonym of Microprosthema Stimpson, 1860. We comment on the synonymy and present the alternative proposition that Chicosciencea is a valid genus, distinctly separated from Microprosthema.

Grooming behaviors reduce body fouling and are well documented in crustaceans. There are more detailed laboratory-based grooming studies on fully aquatic crabs compared to semi-terrestrial crabs. By contrast, semi-terrestrial crabs are predicted to have different grooming time budgets than fully aquatic crabs because semi-terrestrial crabs are not constantly submerged in water that can mechanically remove sedimentary fouling, whereas fully aquatic crustaceans have increased fouling from algae and epibionts. We studied the grooming behaviors of two semi-terrestrial crab species. Crabs (N = 50 ghost crabs, Ocypode quadrata (Fabricius, 1787); N = 50 fiddler crabs, Minuca (Uca) burgersi (Holthuis, 1967)) were observed in isolation for 45-min trials. We recorded grooming frequency, location, appendage, and time. Ghost crabs were also observed in agonistic encounters to determine how grooming varied in the presence of a conspecific individual. Ghost crabs and fiddler crabs have different grooming time budgets, (0.526 and 0.895%, respectively) with both species having lower grooming time budgets than fully aquatic crustaceans. Some similarities and differences in grooming between the two semi-terrestrial crabs exist, with both species frequently grooming their eyes and maxillipeds using a brush or scrape mechanism, but with fiddler crabs using their eyes as a grooming appendage more frequently than ghost crabs. Ghost crab males groom less than females, whereas fiddler crab males and females groom equally. In agonistic interactions in ghost crabs, the grooming time budget decreased compared with isolated observations and individuals engaged in a “playing dead” behavior (thanatosis) after engaging in a fight. Semi-terrestrial crabs were found to groom significantly less than fully aquatic crustaceans.

We conducted a preliminary analysis on the effects of various physical and chemical parameters on the morphometry and reproductive capacity of the calanoid copepod Filipinodiaptomus insulanus (Wright, 1928), endemic to the Philippines, by proxying clutch size (CS). Specimens and water quality readings were obtained between October 2019 and February 2020 from four sites in northern Philippines. Only the sizes of adult males and non-ovigerous adult females showed significant differences (P < 0.05) among populations. Non-eutrophic, temporary shallow waters were the predominant habitat type of F. insulanus, corroborating earlier observations that it is mainly found in relatively pristine environments. Correlation analysis showed a significant indirect relationship (P < 0.001) between the size of individuals and temperature, a potential adaptive response to its environment. Such observations may be valuable in preventing the disappearance of this species from parts of its previously known range.

The water flea Moina macrocopa (Straus, 1820) survived and did not become pelleted when centrifuged at 21,500 × g for 10 minutes. Five out of six individuals tested swam in the microtube after being centrifuged at 100,000 × g for 10 minutes. It was confirmed that M. macrocopa occurred near the bottom of a 15 ml centrifuge tube on the spoke of a bicycle wheel due to the centrifugal force of 5 × g. This results suggests that M. macrocopa would have withstood conditions of 100,000 × g at the bottom of the tube. This is the first report that a crustacean can withstand extremely high gravitational forces, which prompts the potential use of M. macrocopa as a new model for extreme hypergravity.

Ion channels gated selectively by mechanical stimulus are the key elements of mechanosensation. Several genes have been associated with putative mechanosensitive ion channels or mechanosensitive channel complexes. Transmembrane channel (TMC)-like protein is one of those candidate proteins that have been explored in mammals and several invertebrates. The presence and possible function of TMC related genes has not been investigated yet in crustaceans. In the present work an mRNA coding TMC-like protein was firstly cloned in Astacus leptodactylus (Eschscholtz, 1823) (Decapoda: Astacidea: Astacidae) and expressed in HEK293T cells. Three-dimensional structural calculations of the protein predicted a channel. Functional studies, however, indicated that the mechanosensitivity of the transfected HEK293T cells is similar to that in the control cells. It was concluded that a TMC-like protein is present in the crayfish but future studies are necessary to define its function.

We present the complete mitochondrial genome of Tzotzilthelphusa villarosalensisVillalobos & Álvarez, 2013, a freshwater crab from Mexico. This is the first mitochondrial genome reported for the superfamily Pseudothelphusoidea. We performed a de novo assembly from genome skimming reads. The mitochondrial genome of T. villarosalensis has a length of 17,203 bp and its gene topology is similar to other freshwater and marine families, e.g., the position of the cytochrome oxidase complex subunits and ATA synthetase, even the order of nad3, nad5, nad4, nad4L, nad6, and cytb. By contrast, the order and organization of genes like the 16S, 12S, and nad1 are different depending on the phylogenetic group with which they are compared. The phylogenetic analyses placed T. villarosalensis as a sister group of all freshwater crabs reported until now and as part of the subsection Heterotremata. This complete mitochondrial genome could be a reference for further genomic studies of the family Pseudothelphusidae and other primary freshwater crabs.

The mitochondrial genome of T. villarosalensis has a length of 17,203 bp and its gene topology is similar to other freshwater and marine families, e.g., the position of the cytochrome oxidase complex subunits and ATA synthetase, even the order of nad3, nad5, nad4, nad4L, nad6, and cytb. By contrast, the order and organization of genes like the 16S, 12S, and nad1 are different depending on the phylogenetic group with which they are compared. The phylogenetic analyses placed T. villarosalensis as a sister group of all freshwater crabs reported until now and as part of the subsection Heterotremata. Influence of lipid extraction in the muscle tissue of the blue crab Callinectes sapidus Rathbun, 1896 (Decapoda: Brachyura: Portunidae) in the determination of δ13C and δ15N 蓝蟹肌肉组织脂质提取对δ13C和δ15N测定的影响

Stable isotope analysis of δ13C and δ15N has been used in the description of the trophic ecology in marine organisms. This approach has been applied to various taxa including crustaceans. Pre-treatment of samples before isotope quantification is suggested for tissues with high lipid content, because lipids can affect the isotope concentrations. We focused on the isotope analysis of tissues of the blue crab (Callinectes sapidusRathbun, 1896) because it is a significant prey item for intermediate and top predators. We aimed to assess the isotope values produced by two lipid extraction methods and compare these results with values of samples which were not lipid-extracted. Results evidenced a negative relationship between Δδ13C and the C:N ratios, the C:N ratios explaining 98% of the variation in the Δδ13C. Regarding the SEAc results, the δ13C values showed more negative values after the lipid extraction Bligh and Dryer method, which indicates that this method is accurate for pre-treatment of samples before isotope quantification. These results highlighted the importance of lipid extraction before quantifying isotopes and enforces the need of pre-treatment of samples.

We present the first complete mitochondrial genomes for Anaspidacea by sequencing 24 specimens from 12 different species in four genera (AnaspidesThomson, 1894; ParanaspidesSmith, 1908; AllanaspidesSwain, Wilson, Hickman & Ong, 1970; and MicraspidesNicholls, 1931). We recovered 20 complete (13 protein coding genes, two ribosomal RNA genes, 22 transfer RNAs), and four partial mitogenomes. The full mitogenomes range in length from 15,213 bp to 17,962 bp. We found five different gene orders and reconstruct the ground pattern of Anaspidacea, which differs from the hypothetical pancrustacean ground pattern by the translocation and reversal of tRNA-L1. The same translocation is also found in Euphausiacea and could represent a synapomorphy of these two taxa. Moreover, we reconstruct the phylogenetic relationships of the Anaspidesidae using a data set consisting of the mitochondrial protein coding genes, the two ribosomal RNAs as well as nuclear 18S and 28S rRNA. Our results strongly corroborate the monophyly of all three anaspidesiid genera, with Paranaspides as the sister group to Anaspides, which together, are sister to Allanaspides. Lastly, we resolve the main phylogenetic relationships within Anaspides.

Cambarus intermontanus n. sp. is described from mountain streams in the Clear Creek basin along the Kentucky/Tennessee border between Cumberland and Pine Mountains on the Cumberland Thrust Block. The new species is morphologically most similar to Cambarus jezerinaci Thoma, 2000. It differs nevertheless from C. jezerinaci most consistently in the tuberculation of the opposable margins of the propodus. The new species possesses five or six tubercles and C. jezerinaci has four. Cambarus intermontanusn. sp. and C. jezerinaci differ from C. parvoculus Hobbs & Shoup, 1947 and C. distans Rhoades, 1944 in the thickness of the rostral margins and a more truncate rostral tip. The gonopod of C. jezerinaci has a central projection that is normally shorter than the mesial process, whereas that of C. intermontanusn. sp. is longer than the mesial process, C. distans is much shorter, and C. parvoculus is generally equal in length. The new species is genetically distinct from C. jezerinaci, C. magerae Thoma & Fetzner 2015, C. distans, and C. parvoculus differing by a 4–5% sequence divergence on average. Cambarus intermontanusn. sp. was found to be sister to a clade containing C. parvoculus, C. jezerinaci, and C. magerae.
