The aim of the study was to determine the effect of two shade areas per animal on hematological and biochemical concentrations in Zebu and European heifers fattened under heat stress conditions. Fivehundred ten heifers (Zebu, European and its crosses) were randomly assigned to six pens divided in two shade areas: T1) three pens with 100 heifers per pen (shade area: 2.7 m2/animal), and T2) three pens with 70 heifers per pen (shade area: 3.7 m2/animal). Fifteen blood samples of each genotype per pen were collected three times (days 1, 28 and 66) during the study. To analyze metabolites, electrolytes and thyroid hormones, serum samples were used, while for hematological components fresh blood. Data was analyzed under a 2×2 factorial arrangement in a completely randomized design with repeated measurements. The temperature-humidity index averaged 81.7 units. In T1, both genotypes showed similar glucose concentration (P < 0.05), but in T2 glucose concentrations was higher in Zebu (P < 0.05). The urea level were lower (P < 0.05) in T2 than in T1. The Na+ level in T1 was higher (P < 0.05) than in T2. The Cl– in T1 was lower (P < 0.05) than in T2. The hormone T3 showed lower concentration (P < 0.05) in T1 compared to T2. No differences were detected for Htc and Hb between genotypes within T1 (P < 0.05), but they were higher in T2 for Zebu heifers (P < 0.05) than Europeans. Overall, the use of greater shade area did not show substantial differences in the physiology of fattening Zebu or European heifers during summer.

In the Spanish Region of Murcia, there are two native sheep breeds, named as Segureña and Montesina, respectively. The two breeds produce light lambs in areas with high seasonality of pasture and high production costs. Moreover, Montesina breed is at risk of extinction. For this reason, it appears necessary to search different ways of diversification of their production, i.e., by adding a product of high added value, such as suckling lamb. The goal of this study was to evaluate the quality of Segureña and Montesina suckling lambs, at different seasons, with particular attention on the quality of carcass and meat. Twenty-four Segureña suckling lambs and 30 Montesina suckling lambs, single-born males and females, were used. Animals were grouped into two batches according to the breeding season: spring and autumn. The animals were exclusively fed with breastfeeding until they reached 10-16 kg of body weight. After sacrifice, we performed the analysis and measurements needed for calculation of standardized parameters of carcass and meat quality in this species. Overall, parameters of carcass-and-technological-meat quality showed adequate levels for both Segureña and Montesina suckling lambs. The statistical analysis showed a strong influence of breeding season in most of the quality parameters analyzed. The breed only marked significant differences in the fat state of the carcass (p = 0.01) and renal fat (p < 0.001), showing the Montesina breed the highest values. In conclusion, the Segureña and Montesina suckling lambs give carcass and technological meat characteristics of good quality. These results lead us to propose their production into farms in the Region of Murcia, in order to improve their economic viability.

El objetivo genérico del presente trabajo ha sido analizar las posibles relaciones entre los resultados económicos de una muestra de explotaciones de ovino de carne ubicadas en Aragón (España) y determinados indicadores estructurales. Previamente se realizó una tipificación para estudiar su variabilidad. La muestra la componen 126 ganaderías aragonesas de ovino de carne. Se utilizan las medias de las variables durante un período que oscila entre 5 y 24 años dentro del periodo 1993-2016. Se realizó un análisis factorial sobre diez variables estructurales y se identificaron cuatro factores a par-tir de los cuáles se obtuvieron dos grupos significativamente diferentes en cuanto a sus características estructurales. Goat production is quite important in Spain having high census and economic impact. This review has been performed systematically with studies about suckling kids with slaughter weight lower than 13 kg and fed exclusively milk. The carcass weight of kids were distributed into two groups, above and be-low of 5 kg. Kid meat appears as a useful protein source with low fat content. It was found any linear relationship between rearing system or carcass weight with pH. Meat of kids fed maternal milk had gre-ater yellowness index than those fed milk replacers. Toughness was not affected by carcass weight or rearing system and the average value was 35 N. In general, meat of carcasses heavier than 5 kg had less Canarias Murcia Las Comunidades Autónomas del norte de España, como Galicia, Principado de Asturias, Cantabria, País Vasco y mien-saturated and more unsaturated fatty acids, as well a higher n-6/n-3 ratio than meat of carcasses with less than 5 kg. The present work compares the effect of a liquid diet with cooked potato versus a liquid diet only with feed in the finishing stage, on lipid profile from meat of gilts and barrows. Sex did not affect the composition of fatty acids, nutritional indices or cholesterol content, while the inclusion of potatoes in the liquid diet significantly affected fatty acids, mainly the content of essential fatty acids. With respect to nutritional indices, only the n-6/n-3 ratio showed differences due to diet. It can concluded that the liquid diet with the inclusion of potatoes may be an appropriate source for the feeding of pigs, as it does not affect the quality of their fat, while achieving a decrease in production costs.
