ABSTRACT The discovery of Mecochirus cenomanicus n. sp. (Decapoda, Glypheoidea, Mecochiridae) from the Cenomanian stratotype (Le Mans, France) extends the biostratigraphic range of Mecochirus Germar, 1827 from the Early to the Late Cretaceous. The holotype preserves under the pleon about 80 large eggs carried by the pleopods, and thus represents the second record of a decapod crustacean fossilized with clusters of eggs. The size and number of eggs suggest an ontogenetic development like that of the extant decapod crustaceans with short larval stage.

ABSTRACT Contrasting with their suction feeding modern relatives in the families Kogiidae and Physeteridae, Miocene physeteroids display a broad range of feeding strategies. Despite the continuous improvements of the fossil record, the transition from the earliest sperm whales to suction feeding forms as well as the once prominent macroraptorial forms remains poorly understood. In the present work, we investigate a partial sperm whale skull from Lower Miocene (Burdigalian) strata of the Chilcatay Formation of the East Pisco Basin, along the southern coast of Peru. Based on this specimen, we describe a new species in the genus Diaphorocetus Ameghino, 1894, which was previously known only by the holotype of Diaphorocetus poucheti (Moreno, 1892) from a roughly synchronous unit in Patagonia (Argentina). Differing from the latter in its smaller cranial dimensions, higher tooth count, and minor differences in the position of facial foramina, the new species Diaphorocetus ortegai n. sp. confirms a key character of D. poucheti, the marked dorsoventral flattening of the maxillary portion of the rostrum. Such cranial proportions suggest that, compared to other physeteroids, D. poucheti and D. ortegai n. sp. were more efficient at performing fast lateral sweeps of their rostra to capture small- to medium-sized prey items with their proportionally small teeth. Recovered as stem physeteroids in our phylogenetic analysis, these sister species contribute to the ecomorphological disparity of sperm whales during the Early Miocene, but without displaying any of the cranial and dental changes occurring in later, macroraptorial and suction feeding sperm whales. The description of a new species of Diaphorocetus from southern Peru increases the similarities between the toothed whale faunas from the local Chilcatay Formation and the Gaiman and Monte Leon formations of Argentinian Patagonia, pointing not only to dispersal routes between the southeastern Pacific and southwestern Atlantic during the Burdigalian, but also to relatively similar ecological settings along the coasts of Peru and Patagonia at that time.

ABSTRACT The genus Palaeoglandina Wenz, 1914 (Gastropoda: Stylommatophora: Spiraxidae) is a common member of land snail communities in the European Cenozoic. It has been reported from numerous stratigraphic horizons in the Iberian Peninsula ranging from the Middle Eocene (Lutetian) to the Early Pleistocene (Calabrian). Investigating Late Miocene to Early Pliocene communities in the Teruel Basin in eastern Spain, we found that previous species records proved to be misidentifications of a yet undescribed species. Based on a thorough review of contemporaneous European species of the genus we introduce a new species, Palaeoglandina turolensis n. sp. It is characterized by a large oval to fusiform, comparatively stout shell with moderately convex whorls, short spire and large last whorl, large, pyriform aperture, and a characteristic protoconch ornamentation, consisting of a deep spiral groove flanked by thick, short, prosocyrt riblets. We applied geometric morphometric analyses to assess the species' morphological variability. Our results indicate differences in the species' morphospace occupation through time, which we interpret as a morphological shift from the Late Miocene to the Early Pliocene, from broad, short-spired shells to slender, long-spired shells.
ABSTRACT Shift in shell morphology in a lineage of Upper Miocene and Pliocene terrestrial gastropod species (Gastropoda: Stylommatophora: Spiraxidae), with the description of a new species.

En outre, la signification paléo-écologique de cet assemblage est discutée.","PeriodicalId":55111,"journal":{"name":"Geodiversitas","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135293081","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"地球科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The paleontological site of Mauvières is located in the South-West part of the Paris Basin, on the northern border of the Ligerian Basin, 55 kilometers to the North-West of the city of Tours (Fig. 1). It is a small quarry, occasionally exploited by the Poirier family (the owner of the site and of the farm of La Brosse). In 2000, a first paleontological study reported the presence of a rich fauna of continental vertebrates from the Early Miocene (Orleanian European Land Mammal [ELMA], biozone MN3) (Ginsburg et al. 2000). Between 2020 and 2022, new excavations have been performed in these fossiliferous strata. Our study complements previous works (Ginsburg et al. 2000) by adding detail concerning the geological and taphonomic contexts, as well by actualizing the faunal content. The sedimentary succession is divided into six formations: Eocene-Oligocene lacustrine marl, lower Miocene continental sand, upper Burdigalian-lower Langhian marine limestone, Langhian marine conglomerate, upper Miocene-Pliocene fluvial sand, and Quaternary superficial formations. The faciological analyses show a relation between Cenozoic tectonics (Pyreneo-Alpine orogenic phases) and the development of sedimentary architectural elements. During the Paleogene, the activation of normal faults - with a South Armorican Hercynian heritage direction – generated many small lacustrine basins. A shortening begins during the Early Miocene with a significant folding of the area and subsequent erosion of the “Château-la-Vallière anticline” (Fig. 2) as well as the channeling of a fluvial system in the “Esvres syncline” valley (Gagnaison et al. 2020). At the end of the Burdigalian, the farfield westward progradation of alpine deformation is responsible for tectonic subsidence and the first transgressive pulse to the East of the Ligerian Basin. The marine sediments are channeled into pre-existing structures (Bouchet 2009). This tectonic activity occurres throughout the Middle Miocene (Temey 1996) forming submarine reliefs. At that time, the “Château-la-Vallière anticline” is still a structural high and blocks the marine transgression to the North-East (Fig. 2). This tectonic influence slows down at the end of the Neogene (Bouchet 2009). The new paleontological and taphonomic data bring out two coherent Miocene vertebrate assemblages. The assemblage 1 consists of 53 taxa, including the 32 taxa of Ginsburg et al. ABSTRACT Litopterna is one the most diverse and long–lived clades of South American native ungulates. Megadolodus and Neodolodus are bunodont litoptern genera recorded in the middle Miocene tropical faunistic assemblage of La Venta (Colombia). Both taxa were initially identified as didolodontid ‘condylarths’, but later reclassified into Proterotheriidae, within Litopterna. Previous studies proposed their inclusion within Proterotheriidae, but possible affinities with early litopterns and didolodontids have not been properly tested in phylogenetic analyses. We report new material of Megadolodus and Neodolodus from La Venta, which document new aspects of their upper and lower dentition, and we reassess their phylogenetic relationships with Litopterna and Didolodontidae. Using pre-existing matrices, we tested two alternative approaches of character construction for serial characters on the dentition in our phylogenetic analyses. Based on previously known and new fossil material, our analyses with both coding approaches support a close relationship between Megadolodus and Neodolodus, within Litopterna, and do not support a close relationship with Didolodontidae. At a less inclusive level, the relationships of Megadolodinae within Litopterna vary depending on the coding approach used. However, all of our analyses unambiguously support the monophyly of Megadolodinae as a clade of Neotropical bunodont litopterns. While the discovery of these new remains enlightens part of the litoptern phylogeny, the sensitivity of our analyses to coding approaches further highlights the importance of critical evaluation of character construction in morphological phylogenetics.

Megadolodus et Neodolodus sont deux genres de litopternes bunodontes connus dans la faune tropicale du Miocène moyen de La Venta (Colombie). Les deux taxons ont été initialement identifiés comme des condylarthres didolodontidés, puis transférés parmi les Proterotheriidae, au sein des Litopterna. Cependant, leurs affinités possibles avec les plus anciens litopternes et didolodontidés n'ont jamais été testées dans les analyses phylogénétiques. Dans ce travail, nous rapportons du nouveau matériel attribué à Megadolodus et Neodolodus et réévaluons leurs relations phylogénétiques avec les Litopterna et les Didolodontidae. Dans nos analyses phylogénétiques, nous avons testé deux approches alternatives de construction de caractères pour les caractères sériels sur la dentition, en se fondant sur des matrices pré-existantes. Sur la base du matériel déjà connu et du nouveau matériel fossile, nos analyses avec l'une ou l'autre approche de codage soutiennent une relation étroite entre Megadolodus et Neodolodus, au sein des Litopterna, mais pas de relation étroite avec les Didolodontidae.","PeriodicalId":55111,"journal":{"name":"Geodiversitas","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.8,"publicationDate":"2023-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43544850","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"地球科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

ABSTRACT A new malachite damselfly, Palaeophylolestes distinctus n. gen., n. sp., is described from the Paleocene Menat locality. It can be distinguished from other Synlestidae owing to the very long wing veins MA, MP and CuA, and a unique combination of other wing venation features. The occurrence of a Synlestidae in the western Palaearctic area (while extant species occur in Australia, the Oriental region, South-East Asia, South Africa and Hispaniola) is not unexpected given the known fossil record of these insects and climatic conditions prevailing at Menat during the Paleocene.
