Medicinal plants have been used by various cultures since pre-Hispanic times in Mexico. In this study, the use of medicinal plants in the old neighborhoods of Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico is described. 137 species, 130 genera and 68 families were recorded. 34% of the species belong to Asteraceae, Lamiaceae, Malvaceae and Fabaceae families. The neighborhoods of Mexicaltzingo and San Juan de Dios are the most related to the knowledge and use of medicinal plants, while El Santuario is the least similar to the rest. The diversity of uses of medicinal plants according to the Shannon index is high (between 3.0 and 4.92). The Use Value Index showed that Matricaria chamomilla L. was the species that obtained the highest value (0.28), followed by Gnaphalium americanum Mill. (0.23). The age group between 51 and 85 years old has greater knowledge about medicinal plants their uses.

In traditional Mexican medicine, plants from the Montanoa genus, family Asteraceae (Montanoa tomentosa, Montanoa grandiflora, and Montanoa frutescens) have been used to induce labor owing to their uterotonic properties like those produced by oxytocin (OXT). However, whether infusions of these plants can activate hypothalamic OXT-producing neurons is unknown. To test this possibility, five independent groups of Wistar rats (n=4) were included: intact, vehicle, and three groups that received 50 mg/kg p.o. of M. tomentosa, M. grandiflora, and M. frutescens infusions, respectively. Ninety min after treatment, the brains were obtained and processed using double-labeled immunohistochemistry for Fos protein and oxytocin (Fos/OXT-ir). Rats that received Montanoa infusions had significantly greater number of Fos/OXT-ir cells in the paraventricular (PVN) and supraoptic (SON) nuclei, with respect to intact and vehicle groups. These findings demonstrate that Montanoa infusions activated OXT neurons, an effect that may be related to the reported pharmacological properties.

Although numerous studies have demonstrated the biomedical potential of Myrtus communisL., (Myrtaceae) data on myrtle from Montenegro are scarce. To evaluate antioxidant, antimutagenic and antibacterial activity of myrtle methanolic extracts. Antioxidant activity was evaluated by measuring free radicals scavenging activity, reducing power and enzyme inhibition. The strongest scavenging activity was towards DPPH radical (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) (IC501.69-2.25 mg/mL) and superoxide anion (IC500.56 to 0.88 mg/mL), followed by high reducing power (428-472 mgAA/g.DE) and inhibition of XOD (IC500.308-0.6261mg/mL). Antimutagenic activity was evaluated in reverse mutation assays with Escherichia coliWP2 oxyR mutant IC202 and deficient in the induction of antioxidant enzymes. The myrtle extracts strongly inhibited mutagenesis induced by t-BOOH, reaching 70% at the highest concentration applied. Antimicrobial activity was examined on eight different bacterial strains. Gram-positive bacteria, S. epidermis, S. aureusand M. flavus demonstrated the highest sensitivity towards extracts (MICs 4.5-9 mg/mL), but significantly lower towards essential oil (MIC 0.42-3.32 mg/mL).

The present study thus aimed at the development and physicochemical characterization of solid lipid nanoparticles loaded with crude extract of Piper corcovadensisroots (SLN-CEPc) and chitosan-coated solid lipid nanoparticles loaded withcrude extract of P. corcovadensisroots (C-SLN-CEPc), as well as the determination of its antimycobacterial activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosisH37Rv, its cytotoxicity against the Vero cell line and evaluation in the hemolysis assay. Both formulations containing the encapsulated extract showed high encapsulation efficiency, formed by a monodispersed system with small and spherical particles, and there was no aggregation of particles. In the biological assays, SLN-CEPc and C-SLN-CEPc showed promising anti-M. tuberculosisactivity with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 12.5 μg/mL, whereas the cytotoxic concentrations obtained at 50% (CC50) in Vero cells were 60.0 and 70.0 μg/mL, respectively. Therefore, nanoencapsulation showed satisfactory results, justifying its usage in the development of new products.

Triterpenes are very important secondary metabolites with wide structural diversity and significant role in pharmacy and medicine. In the present research, a comparative study of pharamacological activities of the triterpene fractions obtained from several plant species belonging to Lamiaceae family, was carried out. In-vitro anti-proliferative activity was performed using a standardproliferation assay based on tetrazolium salts. In vitro anti-inflammatory activity of triterpene fractions was determined by an assay of inhibition of albumin denaturation. In general, the triterpene fractions obtained from plant species belonging to Lamiaceae family showed a strong anti-proliferative activity and anti-inflammatory activity. The triterpene fraction of Rosmarini folium showed the strongest anti-proliferative activity (GI50range from 4 to 37 μg/ml) and the strongest anti-inflammatory activity in the range from 57.27% to 80.69%. This comparative study provides scientific evidence to support the traditional use of Lamiacae plant species for medical purposes as anti-inflammatory and anti-proliferative medicines.

The lack of effective conventional therapies against dengue has created an interest in herbal preparations as alternative therapies. In the present study, in vitroeffects of Cordia curassavicaessential oil (EO) on both dengue virus replication and cytokine production were examined. Predictions ofmolecular interactions between EO compounds and virus and cell proteins were performed with AutoDock Vina. The EO inhibited replication of dengue virus serotypes at IC50< 30 μg/mL, and it reduced 87% TNF-α, 67% IL-8 and 46% IFN-α in LPS-stimulated PBMCs.The main EO compounds were trans-β-caryophyllene (21.4%), germacrene D (17.8%), α-copaene (16.5%), trans-β-guaiene (8.2%), and α-pinene (6.0%). The first two compounds, δ-cadinene, α-muurolene, α-cubebene and β-burbonene were coupled to proteins involved in the TLR-4 cytokine effector pathway. 3,7-Guaiadiene was coupled to the viral E and C proteins. This study demonstrates the potential of C. curassavicaEO as a starting point for discovering novel therapeutic for dengue.

Larrea divaricataCav. is an autochthonous South American plant popularly used in inflammatory and infectious diseases with reported anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, antimicrobial and antioxidant activities. Covid-19 is an infection caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). This virus can cause pneumonia and even death in about 5% of the cases. The objective of the article was to demonstrate, through a literature review, that L. divaricatahas sufficient attributes to be assayed against SARS-CoV-2. For this, the chemical composition, reported activities and docking studies were taken into account. This review demonstrated that the plant extracts are capable of inhibiting the proliferation of fungi, bacteria and viruses and that they exert anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory actions in different "in vitro" and "in vivo" models. Cinnamon (Cinnamomum verumJ.Presl) is a well-known medicinal plant considered as an effective treatment for neurological disorders based on Persian medicine. The aim of the present study was assessing the effect of cinnamon oil, cinnamic acid, and cinnamaldehyde, on the in vitromodel of Parkinson's disease (PD). Cinnamon oil, prepared in sesame oil, was phytochemically analyzed using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Pheochromocytoma-12 (PC-12) cells were treated with 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) as an in vitromodel of neurodegeneration in PD. Cell viability, activity of caspase enzymes, and formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) were evaluated. MPTP significantly decreased cell viability and increased Casp activity, as well asROS formation. Cinnamon oil and cinnamic acid at 200 μg/mLcould significantly reverse MPTP-induced abnormalities in PC-12 cells including Casp activity and ROS formation. Our study supports the beneficial effect of cinnamon oil in neurodegeneration. Further investigations are needed to clarify the mechanisms and main active components.

In order to understand antidiabetic potential and toxicity, this study aimed to evaluate the acute toxicity and antidiabetic activity of ethanolic extract and ethyl acetate fraction obtained from Coutoubea spicata “nicolau” shoots. Chemical constituents and acute toxicity were investigated. In alloxan-induced diabetic rats, extract and fraction were tested at dose of 100 mg/kg, p.o. Body weight gain, glucose, lipid profile and oxidative stress markers in serum and tissues were determined. In vitroantioxidant activity was performed. Swertiamarin, gentiopicrin, deoxyloganic acid, clovin and robinin, and their p-coumaric ester were identified. Extract and fraction were classified as safe (category 5). In diabetic rats, Coutoubea spicata reduced glycaemia, which was accompanied by body weight recovery gain and attenuation in oxidative stress markers. Fraction showed scavenging activity against 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), and 2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) radical (ABTS) radicals and reducing power higher than that of the extract. Extract and fraction of Coutoubea spicata didn’t present significant toxicity and it can be investigated as a therapeutic alternative in diabetes.
