The current study was conducted to determine the neuroprotective role and mechanism of action of Linalool (LIN) in SCI. The SCI in Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats was induced by weight-drop contusion model. Results of the suggested that LIN showed improvement in the locomotor function of SCI rats in a BBB scoring analysis. It was found in agreement with histopathological analysis of spinal cord tissue where LIN improves the neuronal architecture of spinal cord tissues, and protect neurons from degeneration. It also reduces oxidative stress via modulating endogenous antioxidants (MDA, SOD, and GSH) and inhibits the generation of pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6). In western blot analysis, LIN showed dose-dependent reduction of expression of toll-like receptor (TLR-4) and nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-ĸB). Our study demonstrated that administration of Linalool alleviated spinal cord injury via anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities in spinal cord tissues possibly due to inhibition of TLR4/NF-κB activation.

Leptospirosis is a zoonosis caused by bacteria of the genus Leptospira that affects animals and humans. This disease is usually treated empirically due to its prevalence in precarious areas without basic sanitation. The use of medicinal plants in less industrialized societies has been one of the main therapeutic resources available. Considering the need touse these natural resources to combat leptospirosis in areas of socioeconomic vulnerability, this study aimed to review the literature on the useof plants with medicinal potential in thetreatment of leptospirosis. The results showed that even though leptospirosis is a common disease in communities lacking basic sanitation and economic development, the number of studies on the use of plants with medicinal potential is scarce. Most of these studies comefrom India, and all plants investigated between 2012 and 2020 had antileptospiral action.

Cancer is an important disease that causing to deaths in the world. Cervical cancer is one of the most common among women and must be treated quickly to prevent cell proliferation. Natural products have been used for cancer treatment due to their antiproliferative and apoptosis induction properties. In the present study, we aimed to determine the antiproliferative and apoptosis induction activities of methanol extract of Inula graveolens(IGME) in the human cerival cancer cell line (HeLa). Antiproliferative activity of IGME was evaluated by using MTT (3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5-diphenyl-tetrazolium bromide) method. Apoptosis induction activity was determined by AnnexinV/propodium iodide staining withFACS. ROS induction was determined by DCFH-DA (2′,7′-Dichlorofluorescin diacetate) staining. Interleukin 6 and 8 levels (IL-6 and IL-8) were determined by the Elisa method. IGME exhibited antiproliferative effect and induced apoptosis in the HeLa cells. IL-6, IL-8 and intracellular ROS levels were decreased after treatment of IGME. Consequently, IGME was found to have antiproliferative and apoptosis induction activities as an indicator of the anticancer activity.

Campomanesia xanthocarpaleaves are a byproduct of fruit production without studies on antioxidant activity. Thus, this study aimed to identify the antioxidant compounds of C. xanthocarpaleaves by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled with electrospray ionization-quadrupole-time of flight-mass spectrometry (UHPLC-ESI/qTOF) and by different in vitroantioxidant methods. The crude extract of C. xanthocarpaleaves had a yield of 15.2% and only five out of 37 fractions of the crude extract had antioxidant activity. The crude extract presented greater antioxidant activity than the isolated fractions. The identified antioxidant compounds were phenolic acids (gallic acid and chlorogenic acid), flavonoids (quercetin and naringenin 7,4’-dimethoxy) and an organic acid (quinic acid). Leaves of C. xanthocarpahave high concentration of antioxidant compounds and it is a promising plant for the development of applications in the food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical fields. The extraction of antioxidant compounds can add value to the productive chain of this plant.

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder characterized by the presence of chronic hyper-glycemia that is accompanied, to a greater or lesser extent, by alterations in the metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins and lipids. It is the leading cause of death in developed countries. Current antidiabetic drug treatments present several adverse effects for which it has started searching for new oral hypoglycemic agents from vegetal species. This review presents the medicinal plants from the Peruvian Amazon used in the treatment of diabetes and a systematic review of their hypoglycemic properties reported in the literature in the last twenty years used in different bibliographic databases. Seventy seven medicinal plants are reported as being used for the treatment of diabetes by Amazonian indigenous people, which 46.75% of species report hypoglycemic activity, evidencing that traditional knowledge is a great source for to searching antidiabetic drugs and also an alternative for future research.

Parasitic habit plants arouse great interest for their extraordinary growth adaptations and produce different secondary metabolites that allow them to survive the extreme conditions in which they develop. This can provide a range of compounds with multiple uses. However, those plants have been poorly explored and there is very little information about their natural compounds, some healing properties attributed to several communities have been scientifically supported. Articles were consulted in databases (Google Scholar, PubMed, Scielo, Science Direct, Scopus) considering the biological activity reported until June 2021. Parasitic plants present mainly antibacterial activity, some species antifungal moderate activity, and to a lesser extent were found reports of antiprotozoal activity. The composition of parasitic plants should continue to be investigated, which could be an alternative to combat various microorganisms that cause diseases, even resistant to traditional medicines.

Hedeoma multifloraBenth. (Lamiaceae) is an aromatic-medicinal species native to Argentina, Uruguay and southern Brazil that is in a state of vulnerability due to overexploitation. It is used in the preparation of flavored yerba mate and in popular medicine, mainly in abdominal conditions. The objective of this work was to adjust the micropropagation technique, study the field behavior of vitroplants, compare the seeds generated and close their cultivation cycle. Different concentrations of growth regulators were evaluated on Murashige-Skoog medium. The implantation was successful. There are no differences between the evaluated plants. It was possible to efficiently close the complete cycle in vitro, with 100% survival, flowering and production of viable seeds. This methodology will serve for its introduction to the field, subsequent domestication, reintroduction into its natural environment and mitigate the process of degradation of the populations.

This paper explores the medicinal plants used by Coqueiros Community, Brazil, for the treatment of various ailments. We apply the structured interview and the participant observation, and the local knowledge was analyzed using quantitative measures applied to the general sampling to contribute to selection of promising species for biotechnological development. This community cited 105 species from 53 plant families. The most representative families were Fabaceae, Asteraceae, Anacardiaceae, Myrtaceae, Annonaceae, Apocynaceae, Lamiaceae and Rutaceae. Among the species mentioned in this survey, 66,7% of them occur in the Cerrado as native vegetation. The species considered the most important by interviewees are those with action forthe largest number of health problems. Thus, the statistical indexes used here, such as Relative Impotance (RI), Informant Consensus Factor (ICF) and Relative Frequency of Citation (RFC), contributed to identify these species. To conclude, from this research we have known the potential of the Brazilian vegetation for the development of biotechnology.

Lippia graveolens HBK (Verbenaceae) is an aromatic herb of economic importance in Mexico, known as oregano. The leaves are usedas condiments, and people use this species for respiratory and digestive disorders. The aim of this work was to evaluate the cytotoxic effect of ethanolic extracts obtained from free-oil leaves (L9) and stem (S15), against lung cancer cell line SK-LU-1, through tetrazolium salt (MTT) assay. Extracts concentrations of 0.3 to 300 μg/mL were used and HFF-1 as normal control cells. Both L9 and S15 extracts, showed cytotoxic effect, although stem was stronger than leaves and without damage to normal cell control. The phenolic compounds caffeic acid and acacetin werein higher concentration in L9, whereas naringenin, taxifolin, eriodictyol, luteolin, and apigenin had higher concentrations in S15. The ethanolic extracts of L. graveolens have excellent cytotoxic activity, and have a wide possibility of use in lung cancer treatment.
