A bidirectional long-reach 64-channel DWDM-PON with 50 GHz channel spacing based on wavelength-locked Fabry-Perot laser diodes is demonstrated. It consolidates a metro network into an access network by bypassing the central offices within its reach.

Hollow-core kagome lattice fibres made from polymer are demonstrated for the first time. Simulations of the fibre showed that it does not support photonic bandgaps so an alternative guidance mechanism is proposed.

We have developed an effective fabrication process for As2S3 waveguides. A bottom anti-reflection coating provides a suitable layer to protect the As2S3 film from attack by the alkaline developer whilst CHF3 plasma enables the patterning of waveguides with vertical-profile and smooth sidewalls.

A 1300nm electronically-tunable laser structure employing an Opto-VLSI processor and a semiconductor optical amplifier is demonstrated. Wavelength tuning is realized by reconfiguring the holographic diffraction grating of an Opto- VLSI processor, allowing specific wavelengths to lase through the semiconductor optical amplifier. A tuning range of 5.7 nm is experimentally demonstrated.

In this presentation, we propose novel techniques that improve the performance and the reliability of monolithically integrated VCSELs and RCEPDs , namely, (i) an approach based on forming a self-aligned microlens onto the top distributed Bragg reflectors (DBRs) of VCSEL elements without any additional lithography and (ii) a method that enables tuning the cavity mode of RCEPDs for wavelength alignment. In addition, we propose and demonstrate the proof-of-concept of a reconfigurable inter-chip optical interconnect structure employing Opto-VLSI processors. The performance of the structure is evaluated by measuring the output signals and eye diagrams for different point-to-point and point-to-multipoint optical interconnect scenarios.
