We studied size-dependent optical properties of bare freestanding gallium arsenide nanowires grown by vapor-liquid-solid method. In contrast to blueshift of luminescence peaks usually induced by band filling, redshift was observed for small quantum wires.

A compact widely tunable wavelength reflector using a PLC-based polymer add/drop filter is proposed and fabricated. The measurement result shows that the reflectivity is 0.344 for TE polarization and the tuning range is 42 nm.

An injection-seeded Nd:YAG laser with long pulse duration was designed and built. Single-frequency was achieved through ramp-fire technique. Long folded cavity and large pump spot was adopt to achieve long pulse duration and high energy. The laser operated at 200Hz. The pulse duration of about 80ns and pulse energy of 1mJ was achieved. The laser will be applied in a coherent Doppler wind lidar.
