An optimization algorithm is used to design two-dimensional photonic crystals in hexagonal lattice for large absolute band gaps under light line. By optimizing the location and radius of circular hole in the unit cell, we present four designs considering different circular hole numbers. The genetic algorithm finally yielded a photonic crystal with an absolute common band gap of 0.0796(2πc/a) at the mid-frequency of 0.3712(2πc/a).

A semiconductor disk laser with a transparent chemical vapor deposited diamond heatspreader is presented. The gain region of the semiconductor disk includes 16 non-compensated compressively strained InGaAs quantum wells. 710mW continuous-wave output power at 1043nm is produced using a 3% output coupler and 6100mW incident pump power. The slope-efficiency is 14.2% and the optical-to-optical conversion efficiency is 11.6%. The effect of the diamond heatspreader on the laser is also analyzed.

The transverse mode of high power transverse flow CO2 laser is simulated by solving the laser kinetics equations, using a one-dimension-current model, and according to the discharge filed and the gas flow in the resonator. The electrode configuration and gas flow are the primary factors which influence the laser transverse mode.

GaN-based light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with naturally textured surface grown by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) were fabricated. A naturally textured p-GaN surface layer was achieved by controlling the growth temperature. The output power of the naturally textured surface LED with 850°C growth temperature increased > 50% than the commercial LED. The results show that the naturally textured surface LED could extremely enhance light extraction efficiency and be a candidate for manufacturing high-efficient low-cost GaN-based LEDs.
