The video recognition on computer systems has become a high computing complexity and consumed the enormous amount of energy. This paper uses DVFS power management technique schedules the frame task to cores with higher or lower VF settings depending on a task's time-varying compute intensity. The DVFS based scheduling scheme minimize the number of voltage and frequency transition to solve the limitation of traditional DVFS for multicore systems. The proposed scheme can further improve the energy consumption by 9% to 16% with great speedup.

Solid-state disks (SSD) are widely used storage devices in current consumer electronics. However, the enhancement of SSD data retention and reliability given the high read/write activity are critical research topics. Many error correction codes (ECC) have been developed in the literature to solve the aforementioned issues by embedding ECC design in flash memory. Bose-Chaudhuri-Hocquenghen (BCH) code is the most widely adopted ECC design owing to its error-correcting capability and hardware complexity. In this paper, we propose a hardware-efficient BCH coder that directly codes the input message without extra operations in the generation polynomial term. Compared with state-of-the-art designs, the proposed BCH coding design can save logic gate use and minimize the critical path delay with a 90-nm CMOS process.

In recent years, many character recognition methods had proposed for recognizing handwritten or computer characters. However, there is few paper discusses marker recognition on screw. General speaking, screw images suffered from the influences of splotch and reflection. How to classify the marker of the screw is still a challenging problem. Therefore, we applied the machine learning to recognize the markers on surface of the screw. Experimental results shown that the proposed method achieves reasonable classification accuracy.

In this paper, we present a new authentication architecture for Taiwan High Speed Rail (THSR). The new authentication architecture applies multiple outbound LTE gateways. We also propose an SDN-based authentication method using post-authentication that is suitable for high-speed environment, including THSR. The proposed architecture and method can reduce network congestion and shorten the authentication latency compared to the existing system.

In this work, a novel fast-switching current-pulse driver for dimming controllers of light-emitting diode (LED) backlight applications is proposed. A pair of current switches, which is used to drive the LED string, employs an adaptive bias circuit for low-power dissipation. A negative feedback mechanism and a specific-design discharge current-sink transistor are used to drive the large-size current switches to achieve fast current switching. The proposed current-pulse driver was fabricated in TSMC 0.25-μm 1P4M BCD high-voltage process. The measured rising time and falling time of the LED current are 600 ns and 15 ns, respectively, when the load is a 10-LED string.

Software-Defined Networking (SDN) is a brand-new networking technology which promises to provide flexible architecture and power features. However, performance is always a major concern in deploying SDN. In this paper, we demonstrate how a naive SDN network may suffer from long delay for the first packet in a session, and we propose a "Look Ahead Mechanism" to shorten the delay time. In addition to simulation, laboratory prototypes were implemented to verify the mechanism. The experimental result shows that the delay time can be reduced about 50%, which significantly improves the response time in an SDN-based network.

This paper proposes a crowdsourcing system that can provide Internet streaming media companies with the ability to assess users' Quality of Experience (QoE) when they are watching the company's online video streaming at their residences. To validate the effectiveness of the system, a resident measuring device and crowdsourcing applications on users' end device are implemented with several scenario experiments to measure objective metrics and subjective metrics. Experiment results show approximately 81-100% accuracy of participant assessments when comparing with the standard assessment values.

Power consumption is one of the most important issues of smartphones. Android OS, a popular smartphone operating system, has a function with which an application can be invoked in screen-off state without user's operation. Some applications frequently work in screen-off state, and consume battery. In this paper, we propose a method for identifying applications that largely drain battery in Screen-off state in Android devices. We introduce the standard method of Android for estimating power consumption of each application, and show that it cannot always estimate consumption correctly. Then, we propose a method for identifying heavily battery-draining application by monitoring setting and invoking alarm, which is a common method for executing an application in screen-off state. Our experimental results demonstrate that our method can identify battery-draining applications more correctly than the standard method of Android operating system.

The purpose of single source separation is to recover a particular signal from a mixed signal. This work develops a novel source separation method for use with an automatic speech recognition (ASR) system. The proposed method is based on non-negative matrix factorization (NMF), which is extensively used in single channel source separation. In the cost function, a flexible distance, αβ-divergence, is used. Additionally, a mixture signal in high-dimensional space contains a low-dimensional manifold. To preserve this embedded structure, a graph regularization constraint is added to the objective function for optimization. The experimental results thus obtained reveal that the proposed method outperforms baseline methods.
