Over the last few years, deep artificial neural networks have gotten the most attention in computer science, especially in pattern recognition, machine vision and machine learning. One of its excellent applications is in the emotion recognition via facial expression area. Facial expression analysis is useful for many tasks and the application of deep learning in this area is also developing very fast. We review some recent research works in this domain, introduce some new applications and show the general steps to implementing each of them.

The paper considers the problems related to short-channel effects in a current amplifier, when realized in ultra-deep sub-micron technology. A short description of the circuit and a limitation concerning its basic parameters is given at the beginning. Several steps, allowing an approximate design of the circuit, are outlined. They are applied for design of three versions of the amplifier, each of them is realized with FETs having different channel length: 90 nm, 45 nm and 30 nm. Their basic properties are simulated and discussed, demonstrating the major benefit of the shortening of the channel length—extension of the frequency bandwidth. The problems arising with the shorter channels length are also considered briefly.

Information systems in the health field should be communicating to foster cooperation of professionals in the health process centered on the patient, and to assist in medical decision. Therefore, communication through computer tools and the creation of computerized patient records require the use of semantic repositories whose control is required. Indeed, the sharing of patient data principle is needed particularly because of the development of medical knowledge, which helps to segment the expertise, skills and roles of players. The application of this principle allows greater coordination between professionals and requires appropriate and scalable information systems. The necessary data sharing and the development of information systems strongly emphasizes the issue of semantic interoperability of health systems and management repositories. However, if, in the context of the interoperability of information systems, choice, maintenance and the use of semantic standards are necessary conditions, the behavior of players and practices of evaluation procedures are nevertheless essential component for proper functioning.

A series of seven computing and online games was reviewed following a criterion based selection process. The games were reviewed relative to their capacity to incorporate elements of gaming comparable to content or themes evident in children’s literature including, type of game, genre, elements of violence, disturbing scenes, gender of key protagonists or heroes, location and relative time frame, as well as major themes, evidence of trauma or PTSD components and elements of grief or loss. Selected games demonstrate some capacity for use in virtual narrative therapy and as virtual methods for facilitating maturing processes, and to some extent may interface with moral development as appropriate for age and level of development. Games also show capacity for modifying affect positively based on themes, but will need additional evaluation or research.

The paper considers the calculation of an effective energy schedule in an islanded microgrid. GridLab-D open source simulation tool is used for simulation of microgrid elements. Matlab environment is used to run an optimization solver. The product GridMat is used as an interface tool between Matlab and GridLab-D. An economic scheduling optimization problem for the considered microgrid is formulated and solved. Analysis of the obtained results is presented.

The United States electric power infrastructure is in an urgent need of renovation. The recent incidents of major power outages in the city of Long Beach, Los Angeles, Simi Valley, San Diego, and San Francisco have drawn attention to the unreliability of California’s electric power system. President Obama discusses America’s aging power infrastructure and California Public Utilities Commission calls for a comprehensive review of the causes of the recent power outages. This report explores GIS (geographic information systems) and their aim to identify a correlation between the power plants age and the power outages in the state of California. Utilizing ArcMap OLS (ordinary least squares) modeling tool, data analysis shows no correlation between the power outages and the infrastructure age.

This paper presents a practical usage of several business process management concepts, technologies and tools in the example of the business process for banking payments system. Seen from one perspective, the actual trend in business management is the transfer from functional to process approach. Process approach is considered as a key tool for improvement of business processes. Implementation of process principles into management brings a lot of changes with positive effects as higher competitiveness, productivity and performance of enterprise are. Seen from another perspective many organizations are taking steps to reduce the amount of paper in their business processes. The trend is particularly strong in the financial services industry, where paper-intensive processes present stringent regulatory requirements for timely processing and for controlling the flow of the documents associated with these processes. In this paper is shown how can the process in financial service industry be improved using these two concepts. First step is to integrate BPM (business process management) and DMS (document management system) and results are monitored using BI (business intelligence) and BAM (business activity monitoring). Time, cost and human resources results before and after the usage of this complex system will be also presented.

In this article, we describe Kinoshita’s macroeconomic scheme that is Thetical economics and Antithetical economics on four economic phases. Especially, we focus on transitions among the phases. Four economic phases are Thetical economy, Bubble economy, Bubble collapse economy, and Antithetical economy. We give important roles in the description to bubbles. Occurrence and collapse of bubble cause the transitions of economic phases. So explanations of detailed mechanisms of the bubbles are in the article. We try to show them by varying of the consumption propensity.

Classical Business Intelligence systems are based on common database management systems. The use of such classical, nonpolitical BI systems is not always the best solution. The incorporation of cloud computing technology offers great potential. Therefore, the combination of business intelligence and cloud computing is discussed more and more in science and industry with first products being already available on the market but so far no widespread use has been established. On the one hand, there are less scientifically based progress reports; on the other hand, there is an uncertainty and skepticism. Basic questions regarding the enterprise and software architecture are not yet clear. The absence of standards and transparency promotes skepticism and incomprehension. A lack of comparison and assessment models for BI cloud services and BI cloud systems fueled uncertainty. RABIC, the integrated reference architecture for business intelligence in the cloud, improves this situation by supporting the standardization, increase the transparency and abolish the skepticism. The measures to receive these objectives are to make BI cloud services in a uniform way describable and comparable and to make BI cloud systems assessable, comparable, describable and easier implementable. The vehicles as the integral constituents of the reference architecture are a taxonomy for BI cloud services and an architectural framework for BI cloud systems. This article presents an overview of the reference architecture.

In current scenario, the demand in wireless communication increases rapidly. As the growth of the technology increases, in the same way the antenna research requires in high rate. Mostly the patch antenna creates the focus of the researchers. Multiband but single feed microstrip antenna has been proposed in this work. It is of Z-shape with I-slot antenna that operates at 3.5 GHz and 4.3 GHz which can be used for Wi-Max/S-band &C-band satellite applications. As the radiating edges of the antenna are cut by the slot, the multiple frequency response is generated. In this Z-shape antenna I-slot has been created on the radiating edge for which dual frequency response is achieved. The return losses at 3.5 GHz and 4.3 GHz are -18.88 dB and -16.42 dB respectively. Its bandwidth is of 140.7 MHz (lower band) to 131.5 MHz (upper band). A pair of slits has been inserted in the radiating edge to form Z-shape patch antenna and improved the performance. The proposed antenna designed in this paper exhibits enhanced bandwidth with multi resonant frequency. In this work, a geometric Z-shape is developed from a rectangular patch of width (W = 38.04 mm) and length (L = 29.44 mm). The antenna is designed using FR4-epoxy substrate with a dielectric constant ( of 4.4 and a thickness of 1.6 mm respectively. The result of proposed antenna is obtained in terms of return loss and bandwidth. Its radiation patterns are also studied. The simulated result shows that the Z-shape patch antenna with I-slot has the highest bandwidth in comparison with patch and Z-shape.
