Understanding What Influences Sexual Health Behaviors among Black Males in College.
Pub Date : 2020-01-01 DOI: 10.1353/bsr.2020.0005
Nicholas Reese, Krista D Mincey, Kyazia Felder

Using the Health Belief Model as a guide, focus groups and interviews (n=35) were conducted with Black males at a Historically Black College and University. Findings suggest that norms around the expectations of men and sex relates to their sexual behavior. The study also indicates that while Black college men know they should engage in protected sex (perceived benefits), they are inclined to engage in unprotected sex if their partner is on the pill (cues to action), they don't believe the consequences are immediate (perceived severity), and they like the feel of not using a condom (perceived barriers).

"I Asked for the Papers": How Emerging Adult Black Women Request Sexual Health Information “我要求文件”:成年黑人女性如何要求性健康信息
Pub Date : 2019-12-03 DOI: 10.1353/bsr.2019.0014
Buffie Longmire-Avital
abstract:This study examines the strategies for requesting partner disclosure of sexual health history used by 104 emerging adult heterosexually active Black women (ages 18–29, M = 23). Using a conventional content analysis approach, three strategies emerged. The "straight out" or a "blunt" direct request, which is a sexually assertive style was reported by 70% (n = 53) of the women. The other two request strategies were joint testing or disclosure, and partner initiated disclosure. Heterosexually active Black American women are still at heightened risk for STIs. Findings from this study suggest that some Black American women are not passive or without voice when sustaining their sexual health.

The Enduring Significance of Higher Education for Civic Engagement: The Black LGBT Experience
Pub Date : 2019-12-03 DOI: 10.1353/bsr.2019.0013
T. E. Dancy, CalvinJohn Smiley, Juan Battle
abstract:Employing a national dataset and multivariate statistical techniques, this paper addresses the impact of education, community, identity, and key demographic variables on civic engagement among Black LGBT people (N=1349). Data were collected during the Social Justice Sexuality Project (a survey that measures the experiences of LGBT people of color) and analyzed against theories of civic engagement. Findings showed (1) a robust link between higher education and civic engagement for Black LGBT people; (2) both connectedness to LGBT communities and outness impact civic engagement in racial organizations; and (3) Black LGBT men are more likely than women to civically engage in racial organizations. The findings are discussed with attention to future research as well as the role of students, researchers, and activists in ensuring the civic engagement of Black people, LGBT people, and the intersection of the two.

abstract:There is a growing movement to incorporate sex positivity into clinical and counseling psychology. Although sex positivity has a framework that promotes diversity and inclusion, intersectionality in sex positive research, training, and practice is practically non-existent. The aim of the present paper is to analyze issues related to sex and sexuality from an intersectional sex positive framework. Discussion surrounding intersectional issues among subgroups, sexualities, and relationship structures will be provided. In order to fully adopt an intersectional sex positive approach, recommendations for research, training, and practice will be described.

Re-Imagining Masculinities: How Black Queer Feminism Can Liberate Black People from the Toxicity of Patriarchal Masculinity
Pub Date : 2019-09-10 DOI: 10.1353/bsr.2019.0010

abstract:Patriarchal masculinity was developed to subjugate Black people. This conceptual article asks Black people to re-imagine patriarchal masculinity given its oppressive history. Using Black Queer Feminism, the authors detail the development and maintenance of patriarchal masculinity, discuss the main socializing agents of patriarchal masculinity (religion, parents, peers, & media), articulate how patriarchal masculinity can harm Black people, and highlight the ways in which some Black men are already re-imagining masculinities. Re-imagining masculinities asks Black people to 1) engage in the therapeutic process; 2) confront Black male privilege; 3) embrace all masculinities; and 4) move toward a love-ethic.
