Our Growing Volume Electron Microscopy Community 我们不断壮大的电子显微镜团体

Volume electron microscopy (vEM) represents a powerful group of electron microscopy workflows that enable collection of large three-dimensional volumes at ultrastructural resolution to interrogate cells and tissues across length scales. Due to the breadth of approaches, users are challenged with numerous specialized and nuanced workflows and the requirements for handling, segmenting, visualizing, and quantifying large and complex datasets. As such, a vEM community of core facilities, early adopters, and commercial vendors of vEM solutions have come together to reduce the barriers for successful adoption of vEM. Supported by the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, the rapidly expanding community has built a broad coalition sharing knowledge and working together to accelerate improvements in results, speed, and automation in vEM workflows. Here we provide an overview of the vEM concept, our growing resources, and an open invitation to join our community and upcoming vEM Technology Forum with technical talks, discussions, hands-on demonstrations, and networking.

Stereoscopic Microscopy of Snow Crystals 雪晶的立体显微镜观察

Snow crystals (snowflakes) are composed of an enormous diversity of shapes that have attracted significant scientific attention over the past decades. Under the microscope, these natural structures are frequently characterized by high complexity, the detailed exploration of which requires the use of enhanced magnifications. In the work presented here, an insight into the microcosm of snow crystals is presented by application of specific light microscopy techniques. Micrographs were produced by means of a low-temperature (LT) device that prevented premature melting of the structures. Additionally, single crystals were imaged as to a stereoscopic visualization allowing the detailed spatial investigation of specific structural elements.

Vibration Control Solutions for Microscopy 显微镜振动控制解决方案

Vibration is always present in our environment at some level. It can have a deleterious effect on all types of microscopes and should always be considered when installing a microscope in a facility. Some microscope manufacturers, particularly those who make charged electron or particle beam microscopes, have detailed vibration specifications; others do not. In this article we discuss sources of vibration, techniques for mitigating vibration, and some general rules about which types of vibration control to use based on the type of microscope being used.
