The purpose of this study was to compare the enameling shear bond strength of two "one-bottle" adhesive systems and two systems using primer and bond separately. Four adhesive systems were examined: One-Step (Bisco), Prime & Bond (Dentsply), Scotchbond Multi-Purpose Plus (3M) and Probond (Dentsply). Human molars were sectioned in half and divided into 5 groups with 9 specimens each. Adhesive systems were used following the manufacturer's directions, except for group IV, that only received the bond from ProBond. The teflon cylinder (3 mm diameter) was fixed over the surfaces to limit the area, and the matrix was filled with Z-100 (3M). Samples were stored in water at 37oC for 24 hours and thermocycled between 5 and 55oC at 700 cycles. A EZR-30 Wolpert Testing Machine was used to measure shear bond strengths. The analysis of variance and Tukey's tests were used to compare the various groups (p<0,05). There were significant statistical differences between the shear bond strength of two "one-bottle" adhesive systems and Scotchbond Multi-Purpose Plus.

The purpose of the investigation was to test tensile strength between Ni-Cr alloy and adhesive cements. Variables were: three cements (Comspan, Panavia Ex and All-Bond CB four surface treatments (smooth, sandblasted, electrolytic etching and silicoater); two types of storage (3 and 30 days in NaCl 0.9% solution at 37° C, performing in the latter 600 thermocycles at 5 and 55° C). Specimens were discs obtained through conventional casting procedures and cemented together two by two. Opposite sides of cementing discs were provided with a loop for fixing to the testing equipment. Conclusions were that: smooth surfaces presented very low retentivity and those with silicoater a very high one; Panavia Ex with sandblasting also led to very high retention; highest retention was obtained with the combination silicoater/All-Bond C&B.

The use of antibiotics for prophylaxis and treatment of oral infections is a normal practice in Dentistry. So, it is important that dentists be aware of the potential risks of their use such as adverse reactions and drug interactions. An important interaction involves the concomitant use of antibiotics and oral contraceptives, resulting in reduced contraceptive effectiveness and unexpected pregnancy. This paper reviews the antibiotics most often associated with this problem and possible mechanisms involved in causing failure of contraception. It also examines the dentist's responsibility and the means of preventing such complications.

Due to the concern with the damaging effects of heat distribution on periodontal tissues, this study had the objective of evaluating the temperature generated during the removal of posts with burs in high speed handpieces. Fixed thermopars around the medium and apical regions of the roots of extracted superior central incisors, connected to digital thermometers, were used to obtain temperature measurements during wearing down. Analysis of variance demonstrated a statistically significant difference, to the level of 5%, between the regions where the temperature was taken and the alloys used. When comparing the differences between the regions of roots, the medium portion presented a variation of 9.1oC, and the apical region recorded a 6.2oC amplitude. The alloy containing CuAlZn (GOLDENT) reached the largest amplitude, 10.3oC; the alloys made of CuAl (DURACAST), 6.3oC; and the one made of PdAg (PORS-ON4), also 6.3oC. The factors that probably interfered were: degree of refrigeration, pressure, and intermittent wearing down. Based on the methodology used, we may conclude that the removal of posts by using burs in high speed can generate critical temperature variations, depending on the region of the root and the alloy being used.

This study investigated the biocompatibility of alloplastic materials as internal prostheses. We compared the histologic reactions for two different materials: silicone and hydroxyapatite. We prepared test samples of silicone and silicone with hydroxyapatite coating using "wistar" rats. We did subcutaneous implantations on the back side of rats in both samples. Histological specimens were analyzed after 4 months of observation, and it became evident that silicone with hydroxyapatite impactions did not create any fiberform capsules. These results suggest that we can indicate silicone with hydroxyapatite coating as an internal prosthesis.

The present study had the purpose of determining the relative number of free radicals of three composites with clear and dark colors. Intensities of irradiation were: 110, 180, 300, and 580 mW/cm2, for 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 80 and 90 seconds. Hardness was determined for the clear colors of the composites, using 110 and 300 mW/cm2 irradiation intensities, for 20, 40, 60, and 80 seconds, on front and deep surfaces, at the ages of 5 minutes, 1 hour, 1 day, 1 week, and 1 month. The conclusions were that: depending on the resin, clear colors present more free radicals; the number of free radicals increases with higher intensity and longer irradiation time; composite Z100 is much richer in free radicals than Silux Plus and Heliomolar RO; higher intensity of irradiation leads to increasing hardness; longer irradiation time increases hardness of Silux Plus and Heliomolar RO, but not that of Z100; hardness increases with age; in depth hardness is very low; Z100 is much harder than the other two resins; Z100 is less sensitive to irradiation intensity.

The authors developed sustained fluoride release devices for intraoral application. The drug used, sodium fluoride, was associated to a mixture of polimethylmetacrilate and hydroxiethylmetacrilate, acrylic resins that formed the systems. The finished product presented an adequate behavior in terms of fluoride release and period of time in the oral cavity, as it remained in the mouth for a relatively long time (10 days), continuously liberating small quantities of the drug. These devices have several advantages concerning about drug dosage, mainly by supplying the drug to the right place (target), and maintaining it continuously in the site in an efficient and safe concentration. The development of these devices is the beginning of a field of new therapies.

We compared levels of sera immunoglobulin IgG and IgA, and salivary IgG and secretory IgA (IgA-S) reactive to Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans (Aa). Doses of total sera IgM, IgG, and IgA of patients with early-onset (EOP) and adult (AP) periodontitis, and healthy controls without periodontal disease were assessed. Igs to Aa were determined by ELISA. Total sera Igs were quantified by simple radial immunodiffusion, using a mixture of sonicated extracts of five isolates obtained from EOP patients confirmed as Aa, and sonicated extract of Aa reference strain FDC Y4 as antigens. No significant differences were found between sera IgG and IgA and salivary IgG and IgA-S levels among groups EOP (n=9), AP (n=20), and control (n=20). These results suggest that there was no significant alteration of the Aa humoral immune response level in patients with periodontitis. By quantification of total sera Igs, we found no statistically significant differences between EOP (n=9) and AP (n=9) patients or healthy controls (n=9).

These results suggest that there was no significant alteration of the Aa humoral immune response level in patients with periodontitis. By quantification of total sera Igs, we found no statistically significant differences between EOP (n=9) and AP (n=9) patients or healthy controls (n=9).","PeriodicalId":77611,"journal":{"name":"Revista de odontologia da Universidade de Sao Paulo","volume":"42 1","pages":"207-213"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67651147","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
