The variability of ovarian response in cattle after superovulatory treatment with PMSG is mainly due to differences in the follicular population on the day of PMSG injection. We have tried to modify this follicular population either by destroying some of the follicles at the time of PMSG injection or by pretreatment at the beginning of the cycle. The electrocauterization of follicles on day 16 delayed luteolysis and did not reduce variability. The injection of 1 000 i.u. of PMSG on day 3 post-cestrus produced 35.7 p. 100 of twin ovulations when 600 i.u. were injected on day 16. Another explanation of response variability is the duration of PMSG action which can be modified by controlling the PMSG-oestrus interval with prostaglandin analogs; lenghtening that interval increased the ovulation rates from 1.75 to 4.60 and decreased the number of large follicles growing after ovulation from 5.13 to 0.60. Moreover, when PMSG prostaglandin treatment was associated with progestagen, PMSG efficiency increased. So after 500 i.u. of PMSG at the end of a progestagenprostaglandin treatment we obtained à 34.1 p. 100 twinning rate. Finally, repeated treatments (2 000 i.u. PMSG-0.5 mg PGF 2a analog) every 6 weeks during one year produced the same variability in the response pattern : response was constant in 29.8 p. 100 of the heifers, 27.7 p. 100 showed a definite decrease after 3 to 5 treatments, and 36.2 p. 100 a decrease followed by an increase.

A method to measure the absolute values of the rate of cholesterol synthesis in vivo in the organs of the rat has been described. Adult male rats were intravenously infused for 3.5, 6 and 10 h with sodium 1-4 (C)-acetate and the specific activity of expired C0 2 was recorded during the experiment. Sterol radioactivities were measured in plasma, lipoproteins and in various organs, the radioactivities in each organ being corrected for cholesterol transfer. Summary. The digestion of barley and wheat was studied in the pig using a metho- dology quantitatively describing the apparent absorption kinetics of amino acids and reducing sugars. This methodology is based on the simultaneous and continuous measure- ment of the postprandial increase of the level of these nutrients in the efferent blood of the digestive tract (porto-arterial differences) and the measurement of the portal vein blood flow. After an 18-hr fast, the experimental meals (18 for barley, 22 for wheat) were given to animals weighing 40 to 50 kg in amounts varying from 200 to 1 600 g ; recordings were taken over a periprandial period of 10 to 12 hrs. The following main results were obtained : essential amino acids, aromatic amino acids and methionine appeared more rapidly. On the other hand, arginine and cystine appeared more they were metabolized in the digestive wall. Among the non-essential amino acids, glutamine and glutamic acid appeared very slowly and alanine and glycocolle very quickly and intensely ; non-alimentary products such as citrulline and ornithine were synthesized. Absorption balance after 8 hrs of digestion, as shown by absorption percentages, ranged from 71 p.100 (histidine) to 20 p. 100 (cystine) for barley and between 90 and 29 p. (same amino acids) case of both and glycine in the case of were synthe- sized. The absorption coefficient of glutamic and glutamine very cases.

Summary. Measurement of portal vein blood flow in goats using an electromagnetic flow- meter. When quantitatively measuring the products of digestion in the portal blood, the following factors are to be studied : - the difference between the concentrations of those products in the arterial blood affe- rent to the alimentary canal and of those in the venous portal blood, - blood flow in the portal vein. As a preliminary step, we have undertaken the study of the continuous measurement of the portal blood flow in ruminants (goats), using a method analogous to that employed by Rérat in pigs. Nine goats were fitted with a ring-probe around the portal vein ; during reading, the probe was attached to an electromagnetic flow-meter connected to a recor-der. Fifteen readings were taken on 4 of the animals (mean live weight : 47 kg) for about 7 hours after the morning feeding. After installation, each gauge allowed readings for 4 to 5 consecutive weeks. The signal then faded, and the animals were slaughtered and exami- ned. As the wall of the portal vein had slightly thickened and therefore its lumen was only slightly reduced, signal damping could be attributed to a change in probe functio- ning. The mean flow, measured at the time of reading, was 1 830 ml/min or 39 ml/min/kg of live weight. This study showed a large variability in the flow and distinguished 3 variations throughout the day :

Progesterone, total oestrogens (mainly conjugated and unconjugated oestrone), prolactin and placental lactogen have been determined during late pregnancy in the peripheral plasma of intact or hypophysectomized ewes after destruction of the foetal pituitary. During the prolongation of gestation due to the removal of the foetal hypophysis, progesterone and placental lactogen remained at a high level, while total oestrogens and prolactin maintained a low concentration. When the foetus was perfused for 2 days with dexamethasone, the induced lambing was preceded by a fall in progesterone concentrations followed by a decrease in placental lactogen ; at the same time, an abrupt increase in oestrogens and prolactin was observed.
