We evaluated the efficacy and safety of topical cyclosporine-A in dry eye associated with chronic graft versus host disease (GVHD) in 8 patients. Visual acuity, fluorescein staining of cornea and conjunctiva, tear break-up time, Schirmer test results and subjective complaints were recorded. Topical cyclosporine-A might be an effective and safe treatment option in dry eye related to chronic GVHD.
Dragged macula is a manifestation of several ophthalmic conditions. We present a 25-years-old male with dragged macula in the right eye, good vision in both eyes, and pseudo-exodeviation of 45 prism diopter without diplopia. We tried to correlate between the degree of pseudo-deviation and the distant of the fovea from its expected original position.
We report a rare case ofophthalmoplegic migraine associated with isolated, recurrent unilateral eyelid ptosis in a 10-year-old girl. Labrotory test, pediatric and pediatric neurological examinations and imaging were normal. Recurrent isolated ptosis is a very rare manifestation of ophthalmoplegic migraine. Its recognition saves patient from unnecessary tests and interventions.
We report a case who developed unilateral orbital emphysema after sneezing in a 30-year-old man presented with left crepitant eyelid swelling and progressive ptosis. Sneezing may cause orbital emphysema in cases with a history of minor periorbital trauma. While periodical followup without any medication is considered satisfactory, needle decompression may provide early cure.
We report the first case of combined granular and Fuchs' corneal dystrophy in a male patient who underwent bilateral total anterior lamellar keratoplasty (TALK). Fuchs' corneal dystrophy was diagnosed after the initial diagnosis of granular dystrophy in both eyes. Total anterior lamellar keratoplasty resulted in a clear cornea and allowed visualization of the recipient corneal endothelium. Confocal microscopy following TALK revealed the presence of Fuchs' corneal dystrophy in both eyes.
We report an atypical ocular symptom, hypopyon uveitis without scleritis encountered in relapsing polychondritis. Relapsing polychondritis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of sterile hypopyon uveitis.
VEGA-A concentration was measured in undiluted vitreous fluid samples were taken at the start of vitrectomy procedure from 9 new cases of proliferative diabetic retinopathy and 8 non-diabetic patients. A positive correlation was found between VEGF-A levels and blood sugar and HgbA1c levels of patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy.
Ocular manifestations of systemic malignancy may precede the diagnosis of cancer; some intraocular lymphomas can present initially as chronic uveitis. The two cases described were found to have underlying carcinomas of the lung and oropharynx. Both presented with chronic uveitis and decreased visual acuity that were not responding to antiinflammatory therapy.
We investigated conjunctival flora changes in vernal conjunctivitis (VC) (n = 30) patients compared to the normal eye (n = 30). Growth was observed in 86.6% of the vernal group, and 80% of the control group specimens. We believe that administering prophylactic treatment would be helpful in VC patients who are to have intraocular surgery to prevent postoperative endophthalmitis.
