The author analyzes the content of the social control of deviance, and the role of virtual communication in the formation of the concepts of norm/deviance and presents the results of a study of the online (a)social movement: “Pickup.” The study considers the promotion of consumer values in the context of intimate relationships and analyzes the forms and methods of promotion as presented on the website. Three elements of the process are emphasized: self-presentation, product presentation, and content of consumer discourse as represented on the Web site, RMES (Russian Model of Effective Seduction). Each of these elements is analyzed and their essential characteristics are described.

This article presents data about the aspirations of youth in relation to education and work, and it attempts to forecast the likelihood of fulfilling those aspirations. We have found that youth prefer enrolling in institutions of higher education to other educational trajectories; this is true of children whose parents have different socioprofessional statuses. Young people choose education because they want to obtain work that corresponds to their interests and aptitudes, is high-paying and prestigious, and makes it easy to find work in our country and to become a competent worker. However, most students in the ninth and eleventh grades had not made a decision about their future occupation or could not explain the reasons for their choice, and some were not sure of the correctness of their choice. [The Russian secondary school system goes through eleventh grade—Trans.] The authors do not share the belief that youth are behaving irresponsibly in charting their own future, but we do note a lack of appropriate communication between the labor market and its prospective personnel resources. Study of the opportunities for youth to realize their aspirations leads us to conclude that there is persistent differentiation in education, defined as an inequality of opportunities. The increase of a scarce resource (the number of places available in institutions of higher education) primarily increased the opportunities available to “strong” groups. With tightening conditions in the labor market, workers who received a pseudo-education will be replaced by qualified specialists. Differentiation in education will manifest itself in the labor market even more strongly than before. In conclusion, we draw attention to the fact that the aspirations of youth in educational institutions is consistent with global trends, and their positive motivation to work is the guarantee of progress and an important value component of social well-being.

The article analyzes the Russian lawyers community in order to assess its potential for collective action in an imperfect institutional environment, its potential for joint efforts to monitor compliance with professional ethics, to improve the quality of legal education, and to represent the interests of the professional group at the state level. Two hypotheses are tested: (1) lawyers with high ethical standards impose a higher demand for collective action; (2) negative personal experience in confronting violations of clients' rights by law enforcement officers bodies may also prompt lawyers to engage in joint action. The conclusion is that with the support of the “healthy core” of the lawyers community it is possible to create an instrument for competent and independent assessment of the state of the law enforcement system in Russia.

To a large extent, ideas of social fairness in society are determined by the distributive relations that have been established in that society. Study results show that conceptions of social fairness in regard to fair wages are especially important in Russian society and are closely linked to the amount, character, and content of the work that is done, and the level of compensation in a specific enterprise. The conclusion is that the group interests of those invested with power and control of property constitute an important factor that blocks the setting of wages in keeping with ideas of social justice.

The participation of women in business management in Russia has been the subject of research in recent decades, but has been limited to issues of access and motivation, and how these differ for men and women. What is missing, however, is studies on what the economic consequences are for Russian businesses that have women in top management positions.

Data from all-Russian surveys from the mid-1990s to 2013 have shown, as a result of the completion of the structural restructuring of the economy in Russia, an increase in the significance of stratification factors that foster intergenerational reproduction of classes, while the role of the factors linked to an individual's personal activity has diminished. The conclusion drawn is that the mechanisms of mobility that have emerged are leading the country farther and farther away from the meritocratic ideal of a society of equal opportunities.

Based on materials of national surveys conducted by the Institute of Sociology, Russian Academy of Sciences, in 2013–14, the article analyzes the norms and values of the middle class of Russia, its ideas concerning the desired vector of the country's development. It shows that the values that representatives of the middle class are guided by in everyday life are of a modernized, activist character, which distinguishes them from other groups in the population. Political values and attitudes toward the country's future development basically do not differentiate the middle class from the rest of Russians. Among the representatives of the middle class (and among the rest of Russians) there is a consensus that it is not useful to copy the Western model of development and that a “special path” is necessary for the country. This is defined both by the characteristics of their norms and values and by their attitudes toward private property and the supremacy of law.

The article examines the dynamic of the middle class based on materials of nationwide surveys conducted by the Institute of Sociology, Russian Academy of Sciences. It finds that Russian society has become a society of a mass lower-middle class. It offers an assessment of the possibilities and necessary conditions for the expansion of the middle class in Russia. It finds that the numerical dominance of positions that are peripheral to it in the composition of the middle class is conditioned by the model of the Russian economy, in which the percentage of positions of professionals, managers, and entrepreneurs is relatively low. It demonstrates that the Russian middle class is characterized by specific stratal identities, making it possible to speak of the beginnings of the formation of a class consciousness in it. It cites characteristics of the lifestyle and consumption of the middle class. It finds that while retaining a significant separateness from other Russians in the period from 2003, members of the middle class were characterized by a worse dynamic of indicators in Russia. The nucleus of the middle class were in the least well-off position.
