This article analyzes the estimates and opinions of experts (employers, representatives of recruiting agencies and municipal employment services, heads of labor departments in the regional administrations, heads of institutions for professional education) and graduates of universities and technical institutes (SSUZs) with respect to youth employment and matching up youth with jobs. The article shows that in most cases the professional skill of graduates does not correspond to the needs of regional labor markets. This particularly means undereducation and insufficient preparation, as well as a lack of practical skills and experience. There is also an obvious surplus of university graduates. As a result, the employer is forced to include in the company’s budget funds for continuing education of the young employees to further their professional growth and the subsequent economic return, due to increased labor productivity and competitiveness of the company. Continuing vocational education (CVE)* thus becomes a necessary means to adapt young graduates to the requirements of the labor market.

This article discusses the basic spiritual and moral values and socio-occupational interests of high school seniors, and the major factors shaping them. It shows that one of the main problems is the students’ inflated assessment of their own intellectual abilities, which leads to errors in the choice of educational institution and profession. It analyzes networking programs for professional and vocational orientation, designed to resolve the acute contradictions in the “school–university–labor market” system in the Urals Federal District.

This article analyzes the results of sociological research on unemployed people’s social and work expectations about self-employment (1995, 2002, and 2013), conducted in a monitoring mode and using a single methodology, in Novosibirsk oblast. The study focuses on the potentials and limitations of self-employment, and studies the changing sociodemographic potential of the unemployed population, their motivation and willingness for self-employment. The authors conclude that the encouragement of self-employment should be accorded the status of a nationwide issue, which will immediately affect two processes: developing entrepreneurship and fighting unemployment.

This article analyzes the socioeconomics of rural territories and a survey of the heads of local governments' agricultural agencies and agricultural businesses. Changes in the Russian countryside, actual or expected contributions by state and federal programs to rural development, and opinions as to what areas of development should be assigned the highest priority are all examined.

This article identifies the main values and value orientations of Russia's rural population in the areas of labor, material well-being, family, and health, as well as changes in the hierarchy of values that began in the late 1990s. It is concluded that this population has a stable value structure primarily centered on nonmaterial values. Also noted are features of value systems among rural populations that could serve to cause changes and a return to traditional values.

This article presents the results of a public opinion survey of socioeconomic development in the countryside. The survey focused on quality of life, involvement in social and work life, and the social mood of rural residents in southern Tyumen oblast. We present arguments in favor of solving social problems through interaction between government bodies and villagers that takes their interests and opinions into account and involves them in realizing targeted agricultural development programs.

This article spells out the methodological considerations and various procedural and methodological subtleties developed over the author's quarter century of sociological field studies of Russia's peasant worlds. Particular attention is paid to “voices from below”—peasant discursive formats that capture, in natural and undiluted form, the evolution of peasant practices constituting the core of everyday life. In particular, the phenomenon of generational sorrow and a special chronological nostalgia that functions as a “social gyroscope” is identified and discursively captured. This phenomenon is noteworthy and useful for its ability to retain a record of the productively longed for past in a rural community's collective memory and thereby influence new peasant worlds taking shape today.

This article analyzes sociodemographic processes in rural districts of Russia's Near North, primarily Kostroma oblast, which is representative of the region. Attention is focused on analyzing the mechanisms and assessing the scale of depopulation processes, in which high mortality among the working-age population, migration of the young and middle-aged to cities, and an imbalance in the age and sex composition—a predominantly elderly population and a small proportion of children—all prove to be contributing factors. The authors identify significant differences in demographic indicators across administrative units in Kostroma oblast and emphasize the importance of sociodemographic studies at the primary (municipal and more local) level.

This article examines contemporary forms of urbanization, suburbanization, and counterurbanization, exploring their many facets as the physical movement of populations and changes in lifestyle and values orientation, including the phenomenon of “downshifting.” Incomplete urbanization and the polarization of the socioeconomic space have given rise to two powerful opposite outpourings: the centrifugal seasonal flow from cities to dachas and the centripetal labor migration of Russian citizens from rural areas and small towns to major urban centers.

Based on data from three waves of research, “Children and Parents, Men and Women in Family and Society” (CPMW) analyzed various aspects of the lives of incomplete families in Russia: their structure, well-being, and possibilities for single mothers to combine work and child care. The analysis showed that the household structure under single mothers tends to change over time: the number of relatives living together decreases. The housing conditions for single-mother families does improve, but improvement of their consumption ability and material circumstances does not last over time.
