Why are some educators suggesting that the theory of schooling be changed from organization to community? After defining and describing characteristics of genuine communities, a case is made for building community in classrooms. Processes of community-making, developed by Peck, are applied to educational settings. Peck's (1987) stages (Precommunity, Chaos, Emptiness, and Genuine Community) are then related to actual classrooms.
为什么一些教育家建议将学校教育理论从组织转变为社区?在定义和描述了真实社区的特征后,提出了一个在教室中建立社区的案例。由Peck开发的社区构建过程应用于教育环境。Peck(1987)的阶段(pre - Community, Chaos, empty, and real Community)则与实际的教室相关。

Although the problem of impaired professionals has been with us for as long as professionals have been so designated, this article considers potential harm to clients and the profession’s obligation to monitor its members and provide apppriate rehabilitation. Definitions of distress and professional impairment are discussed, as are the indicators of impairment. Most of us have probably heard the apocryphal old story of a young counselor just starting his professional career. The counselor enters an elevator in which the only other passenger is an older, much respected counselor whom the young counselor recognizes. The young counselor’s clothing is rumpled, his hair is mussed, and his general appearance is frazzled. The young counselor sighs deeply at the mature colleague who has every hair in place and looks like the proverbial “cool cucumber.” The young counselor blurts, “How do you manage to stay so calm and look so composed and serene after listening to all those tales of woe all day? I am exhausted, and totally strung out by the multiple problems I hear from my clients.” The older counselor looks vacantly at the younger colleague then responds briefly, “Who listens?” Perhaps the older counselor may never experience burnout, while the new counselor moves toward severe impairment. However, few would advocate the former’s method of prevention. Surely, there must be a middle ground on which counselors may stand, listening and caring, yet maintaining their own boundaries and leading a balanced enough life to avoid the diagnosis of “impaired.”

Few situations are more distressing for professional counselors than to know or suspect that a colleague is practicing while being impaired. This article suggests appropriate steps that an individual counselor might take to help an impaired colleague, using as a guide, the ethical decision-making model developed by the American Counseling Association Ethics Committee. Two scenarios are presented to illustrate how the model might be applied.

Wellness is a positive state of health that can be promoted in all counselors, impaired or not. This article discusses prevention from counselor preparation to clinical practice. Recommendations for preventing impairment are proposed for counselor education faculty, regulatory boards, employing organizations, and practicing counselors.

Relationships were examined between measures of shyness and self-esteem for 53 preschool children. Shyness was negatively related to a self-esteem rating and to a measure of the child's expectations of self-efficacy in performing motor tasks. Continued attention to early shyness in empirical, theoretical, and practical work is suggested.
