This case study describes challenges faced by a women's center when their relatively homogeneous, middle-class clientele shifted to one of diverse, inner-city women. Strategies for meeting these challenges included encouraging staff members to examine their personal values and coping skills, reassessment of services offered and method of service delivery, and a commitment to empowerment of both staff members and clients through personal growth.

The relationship between family structure and self-concept was investigated in a gender-ethnic context for middle school students. A significant relationship was found in White girls only, and only in particular dimensions of self-concept. Results support viewing these phenomena in gender, ethnic, and economic contexts. Some elements of current practice in helping students living in various family structures are also supported.

At-risk students need a humane educational environment to help them gain a sense of purpose and self-worth. This article describes an educational program for juvenile delinquents that is working toward these goals through incorporating three basic humane values into its philosophy: an environment of care, focus on the individual, and experiential learning.
