The most effective leaders understand their own styles and recognize the styles of others. They also know when to flex to another style to get the results they desire for their colleagues, patients, teams, and organizations. The DiSC assessment identifies four leadership preferences — dominance, influence, steadiness, and conscientiousness — and can be a practical tool for physician leaders to build emotional intelligence and relationship skills.

Ageism and age discrimination — stereotyping, prejudice, or discrimination against older adults — are evident in all manner of workplaces, including healthcare. Biases in the hiring and firing of older physicians are usually rooted in concerns about their performance and safety records. Relatively little data, however, is available related to the effect of age on the skills and performance of non-clinical physicians working in industry settings — for example, pharmaceutical and health insurance companies. Managers should be aware of bias “blind spots” in their hiring recommendations.

Overwhelming grief during the pandemic’s peak was prevalent for many. Grieving the capabilities of one’s past practice settings in a new world order is still common, and for some, this manifests in holding a grievance toward unknown or unidentified forces. The physician workforce and physician leaders have an opportunity to reshape healthcare’s future by helping lead and care for those individuals and organizations caught up in a cycle of persistent grief.

Postoperative respiratory failure is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality. Early identification of patients at moderate to high risk of postoperative respiratory failure is critical to effective prevention strategies. A multidisciplinary team developed a robust process for the early identification of at-risk patients and the prevention of respiratory failure in the perioperative setting.

Recently, I have taken notice of health services that continue to cross over to areas that were traditionally called beauty, cosmetic, and wellness services. These services are increasingly being offered by healthcare providers around the country. Admittedly, I knew very little about this area despite being a physician leader in several roles over the course of my career. I quickly came to learn that there are important implications for ensuring the delivery of high-quality services in the health, wellness, and beauty space that have relevance for physician leaders more broadly.

Defining the culture for any organization or institution can be markedly difficult, occasionally framed simply as “the way we do things around here.” But the pandemic has created evolving differences in how our healthcare industry considers its cultures and the communities of practice. Physician leaders have the opportunity to help reshape these healthcare cultures.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, many institutions saw an overall increase in central line associated blood stream infection (CLABSI) events. CLABSI events can be prevented by decreasing central line utilization, improving practices during central line insertion and maintenance phases, and daily surveillance for necessity. A belief that zero harm to patients is possible and development of a supportive organizational culture with visible leadership were key to reducing CLABSI events and creating long-lasting change, even during the pandemic.
