The aim of the current paper was to examine reflections on the foundation of the Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI) and its impact on the development of academic psychology in the Republic of Ireland. The study was conducted using interview data from participants who were involved in the organisation and foundation of psychology in the Republic of Ireland. Themes were identified in relation to the foundation and development of psychology in Ireland. Results suggested that PSI had an influence on the organisation and consolidation of the discipline as well as an impact on the internationalising of psychology in Ireland. Beyond this, the foundation of the PSI itself was found to have been influenced by international experiences and the presence of a professional body in Northern Ireland. Future research may focus on documentary material on the foundation of the professional body and the impact of international influence on the foundation of PSI

Behaviour analysis became part of academic psychology on the island of Ireland from the late 1970s with the establishment of the Behaviour Analysis in Ireland (BAI) group. Teaching and researching in the science of behaviour analysis have continued and developed in the universities since that time, with researchers based in Ireland contributing substantially to internationally recognised research. In recent years, there was a growth in schools based on applied behaviour analysis (ABA) for children with autism, and also in the use of positive behaviour support in intellectual disability services. Over the period that behaviour analysis has developed in Ireland and the discipline has become much more widespread internationally. The growth has been largely driven by demand for schools based on ABA and has also resulted in many new national organisations to support the science and profession of behaviour analysis, particularly in Europe. The Division of Teachers and Researchers in Psychology (DTRiP) was established in 2007 in order to represent the views of psychology teachers and researchers within the Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI) and to continue the work of the Teachers of Psychology Interest Group (TPG), which was active within the PSI in the 1980s. The activities of the Division reflect the objectives set out in the Division rules: to promote best practice in teaching and research in psychology; to provide a forum for the sharing of psychological knowledge and expertise; to promote and maintain high ethical and professional standards; to promote and encourage scientific research as it applies to teaching and learning and to promote the use of scientific methods in research; and to liaise with relevant bodies in the promotion of the Division goals. It is well documented that unemployment has deleterious effects on psychological well-being. Ireland's high economic growth in the 1990s and early 2000s saw unemployment fall to 4%. However, since the end of the Celtic Tiger era in Ireland, the recession has been severe and unemployment high. It was hypothesised that the increase in unemployment will be accompanied by a decrease in psychological well-being. The present aim was to compare Irish employed and unemployed male and female respondents in terms of psychological well-being, and to investigate whether financial strain mediates the relationship between employment status and psychological well-being. Data were collected from a sample of 199 participants ranging in age from 18 to 64 (employed: n=100; mean age = 32.34, SD = 13.39; unemployed: n=99, mean age 35.26; SD = 11.16). The Psychological Therapies Department within the Police Rehabilitation and Retraining Trust (PRRT) was established in Northern Ireland in 1999 to provide a specialist clinical service to retired police officers who have been psychologically affected through their experiences as a serving officer. The past decade has brought with it a more stable political climate and the prospect of peace in Northern Ireland. The objective of the present study therefore was to establish the current level of psychopathology among retired officers, which in turn would help inform service provision. Out of a randomly selected sample of 3000 retired officers, 972 responded to a postal questionnaire, which incorporated the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12), the Modified PTSD Symptoms Scale -Self Report (MPSS-SR), and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). In a powerful media interview an Irish public figure, Nuala O'Faolain, discussed cancer and the dying process. The study aimed to investigate how Nuala created meaning while living with terminal illness. Psychological research and models considering death are presented to contextualise the study. These models have largely focused on cognitive and prescriptive stage models. It is proposed that an understanding can also be gained by examining how through interactions individuals construct personal meaning of death and the dying process. This study utilised discourse analysis as outlined by Edwards and Potter to analyse such an interaction arising from the interview. Four dominant themes emerged: diagnosis, treatment, the interviewee's current mindset and the dying process. The interview functioned in aiding the interviewee to create meaning of her own experience. Finding measures of theory of mind (ToM) that are robustly related to contemporary measures of personality, we developed 10 scenarios reflecting either folk theory or simulation approaches to ToM deployment. Participants responded to scenarios in one of three formats: (1) by endorsing different descriptions representing possible thought processes of a scenario's protagonist, (2) by guessing whether protagonists had used folk theory or simulation strategy, or (3) by rating the protagonist's use of both strategies using Likert scales. Persons who used the second two rating formats received descriptions of the concepts of folk theory and simulation. Females and those rating possible thought processes, specifically format (1), had significantly greater tendency to endorse folk theory models than did males or those who simply selected theory or simulation (2). Despite its intuitive appeal as a construct relevant to a number of psychological outcomes, adequate operationalisation of social intelligence has been problematic for researchers. This research aimed to extend the understanding of the measurement of social intelligence by investigating the psychometric properties of the English version of Tromso Social Intelligence Scale by Silvera, Martinussen and Dahl. Factor analysis (N=328; Maximum Likelihood with Promax rotation) revealed three clear factors that paralleled the original Norwegian measure: social skills, social information processing and social awareness. Construct validity was also examined (N=116). As predicted, social intelligence was strongly and significantly related to political skill, emotional intelligence (EI) and empathy in both males and females. People who frequently attend religious services tend to enjoy higher subjective well-being compared to people who attend less often. Research to date, however, has yet to resolve two key questions: (1) what level of insight does attendance at religious services actually provide above other predictors of well-being, and (2) what are the mechanisms that help to explain their positive association? To begin addressing these questions, this study first tests for the unique contribution of service attendance in predicting life satisfaction, an indicator of well-being, beyond the effects of other well-established predictors. This study then examines if perceptions of social support from religion mediate the association between attendance and life satisfaction. Research to date, however, has yet to resolve two key questions: (1) what level of insight does attendance at religious services actually provide above other predictors of well-being, and (2) what are the mechanisms that help to explain their positive association? To begin addressing these questions, this study first tests for the unique contribution of service attendance in predicting life satisfaction, an indicator of well-being, beyond the effects of other well-established predictors. This study then examines if perceptions of social support from religion mediate the association between attendance and life satisfaction.
