Abstract Genetic structure analyses have yielded some examples of inconsistencies between genetic and morphological information. Here, eleven nuclear microsatellite markers and mitochondrial haplotypes were used to examine the genetic structure and gene flow among Japanese Undaria pinnatifida populations and the congeneric species U. undarioides and U. peterseniana. Undaria pinnatifida was subdivided into four “Groups” of populations based on Bayesian clustering analysis, Neighbor-net analysis and Principal coordinate analysis (PCoA). Undaria undarioides samples formed a unique Group. In contrast, U. peterseniana samples either grouped with a mixture of U. pinnatifida and U. undarioides clusters or were included within one of the U. pinnatifida clusters. More significantly, Groups of populations shared alleles with geographically adjacent Groups even between different morphospecies. No clear differences between the inter-and intra-specific genetic divergence were observed in either nuclear or mitochondrial markers. As a result, U. undarioides and U. peterseniana were synonymized with U. pinnatifida. Isolation-by-distance suggested the significance of geographical isolation for maintaining the observed divergence.
因此,undarioides和U.peterseniana被同义为U.

Abstract Nitzschia martiana, recently restored to Homoeocladia (C. Agardh) emend Lobban et Ashworth, has needle-like cells and forms macroscopic colonies that are so distinctive that they have been reported on the basis of light microscopy alone. It is the type species for Homoeocladia, which have long flaps (conopea) arising from the sternum and covering a valve depression. This group has extreme diversity at the ultrastructural level and it would not be surprising to find another similar to H. martiana. However, Nitzschia venerata, sp. nov., is a surprising look-alike found in a coral reef seaweed sample from Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands (Western Pacific Ocean). It was studied with light- and scanning electron microscopy. Attempts to find colonies in live and preserved samples were unsuccessful. It is very long and narrow, with a valve depression like that in conopeate species. However, ultrastructurally it is not conopeate because the long flaps arise from the valve face and grow toward the keel and can therefore be classified as scuta. Although tube formation remains unknown, the extreme length and narrowness of the cells suggest it might occur, so that scientists identifying potential H. martiana should be alert to the possibility that they have N. venerata or some other needle-like Homoeocladia.

Abstract We present a three-gene phylogeny, based on nuclear (short fragment of large subunit ribosomal RNA gene, 1150 base pairs), chloroplast (ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase large subunit) and mitochondrial (5′ region of the cytochrome oxidase subunit 1) genes, to determine the position of three species, Kallymeniopsis verrucosa, Beringia castanea and Crossocarpus lamuticus in the Gigartinales. These species were placed by Perestenko in the family Crossocarpaceae, a proposal that was not supported by most phycologists. The goal of this project was to resolve the taxonomic position of these three species and answer the question: Is the Crossocarpaceae a separate family? The concatenated multi-gene phylogeny and the individual gene trees show that these algae nest deeply within the family Kallymeniaceae; K. verrucosa and C. lamuticus are most closely related to species referred currently to the genus Erythrophyllum, whereas B. castanea is sister to the recently established Commanderella ruprechtiana. Taking into account the data on morphology, vegetative and reproductive anatomy of different species, we propose to revive the genus Kallymeniopsis with three species and to retain Crossocarpus as a separate genus. Beringia is a separate monotypic genus.

Abstract We report the circumtropical dinoflagellate Tripos lanceolatus (Kofoid) F. Gómez from the Colombian Caribbean, provide a new record from the tropical western Pacific off Tonga, and the first record from the Australian sector of the Indian Ocean. We present the first scanning electron micrographs of thecal ornamentation and apical pore structure which show its morphological similarities to T. furca (Ehrenberg) F. Gómez within the subgenus Biceratium. We also report the more widely distributed tropical species T. schroeteri (B. Schröder) F. Gómez from the Colombian Caribbean, and compare it to the first scanning electron micrographs of the morphologically similar T. digitatus (F. Schütt) F. Gómez within the subgenus Archaeceratium.

Abstract This bionomic study of the detritic bottoms dominated by macroalgae from the south of Mallorca (Balearic Islands, Western Mediterranean) includes a quantitative description of the algal communities found in the area, as well as their bathymetric and geographical distribution. The results presented here are based on data collected in two oceanographic campaigns conducted in July 2012 and September 2014, using a Jennings beam trawl. A hierarchical group average agglomerative clustering, accompanied by the SIMPROF test, allowed the identification of seven different macroalgal communities, of which two are described here for the first time: the Cryptonemia longiarticulata fields and the Maërl beds of indeterminate rhodoliths. Depth and rhodolith abundance were the two main features driving the distribution of these communities. We found that seven species contributed 70% of the similarity between samples (SIMPER test), with the indeterminate species of rhodoliths (23.6%) and the encrusting fleshy red alga, Agissea inamoena (15.6%) being the most important. The methodology used for the sample selection and quantification processes turned out to be very efficient and faster than other methods used for the characterization of macroalgal communities from detritic bottoms, suggesting that this study could serve as a baseline for similar studies and for future management and conservation actions.

Abstract The Brazil-Malvinas Confluence (BMC) is characterized by high environmental variability and represents a hotspot of phytoplankton biodiversity. This study has investigated the phytoplankton composition in the BMC and a Cold Core Eddy (CCE), with particular reference to the life forms and trophic modes of the species. Vertical hauls were performed between the maximum chlorophyll depth and the surface with a 20-μm mesh plankton net at six sampling points in the BMC (4 hauls) and CCE (2 hauls) during the austral spring (November 2019). Temperature and salinity were determined in situ. The Brazil Current and Malvinas Current in the BMC had different species compositions, and the CCE had greater similarity with the Malvinas Current. Autotrophic organisms (mainly diatoms) and marine planktonic oceanic and/or neritic life forms were predominant in the BMC and the CCE. Heterotrophic dinoflagellates were predominant in the Brazil Current and the CCE, while mixotrophic dinoflagellates in the Malvinas Current were associated with low temperatures and salinities. A high diversity of species was confirmed in the region, mainly associated with marine planktonic oceanic and/or neritic species, and there was a predominance of autotrophic organisms. The temperature conditions in the CCE promoted an increase in species richness in the region.

Abstract Digenea is a widely distributed genus in the Mexican Atlantic, and until a few years ago the only morphospecies D. simplex was recorded. Recent molecular research on this species from a locality in the Mexican Caribbean revealed the new species D. mexicana, whose morphological similarity with specimens from Gulf of Mexico suggests that its distribution range could extend to this area. The aim of this work was to characterize the molecular and morphological characters of Digenea specimens from different sites in the Mexican Atlantic, to confirm this hypothesis and even reveal the presence of new species or records for the country. Our phylogenetic analysis of COI-5P and rbcL markers revealed a new record of D. arenahauriens in Mexico and confirm the presence of D. mexicana in the southern Gulf of Mexico. The species delimitation methods showed potential new species for Australia, Japan, and Brazil. The true D. simplex was not recorded molecularly for Mexico. Morphological comparisons indicated an overlap among most of the species of the genus. Future studies about molecular and morphological characterization of Digenea specimens from around the world could help to clarify the problem of specific delimitation, and even reveal new species for the genus.

Recent molecular research on this species from a locality in the Mexican Caribbean revealed the new species D. mexicana, whose morphological similarity with specimens from Gulf of Mexico suggests that its distribution range could extend to this area. The aim of this work was to characterize the molecular and morphological characters of Digenea specimens from different sites in the Mexican Atlantic, to confirm this hypothesis and even reveal the presence of new species or records for the country. Our phylogenetic analysis of COI-5P and rbcL markers revealed a new record of D. arenahauriens in Mexico and confirm the presence of D. mexicana in the southern Gulf of Mexico. The species delimitation methods showed potential new species for Australia, Japan, and Brazil. The true D. simplex was not recorded molecularly for Mexico. Morphological comparisons indicated an overlap among most of the species of the genus. Future studies about molecular and morphological characterization of Digenea specimens from around the world could help to clarify the problem of specific delimitation, and even reveal new species for the genus.","PeriodicalId":9191,"journal":{"name":"Botanica Marina","volume":"65 1","pages":"433 - 442"},"PeriodicalIF":2.2,"publicationDate":"2022-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44722153","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Abstract Macroalgae play a vital role in marine ecosystems, but human effects are threatening the composition and structure of algal communities. In the present investigation, the spatial and temporal variations of species composition, functional groups and percentage macroalgal cover were studied in relation to seasonal fluctuations of some physicochemical parameters, to determine the ecological status of macroalgae in coastal waters along the coast of the northwestern part of the Red Sea, from November 2020 to October 2021. Fifty-five species of macroalgae were collected and identified from the sites studied. Five functional groups of macroalgae were recognized. Among these were two turf-forming species, 34 species of upright fleshy algae, and three crustose algae. There was a large variation in the cover, as well as in the species richness and assemblage structure of the macroalgae in different sites and seasons. Seasonal changes, determined by environmental conditions, led to small changes in macroalgal cover at different sites, with the growth of some brown macroalgae suppressed by high sea temperatures, whereas some green and red macroalgae, increased in response to increasing temperature and salinity.

Abstract Sequencing of a mitochondrial intergenic spacer and 23S subunit was used to investigate the phylogeographic patterns in Fucus vesiculosus. Samples originated from 21 sites spanning six subbasins of the Baltic Sea. We identify a putative ancestral mitochondrial haplotype that entered the Baltic Sea from the Atlantic, colonising extensively throughout the species’ distribution. The dominance of this haplotype is seen in the low overall haplotype diversity (Hd = 0.29). Moreover, there is indication of few spatially aggregated patterns in the deeper demographic time scales (Fct = 0.040; Fst = 0.049). Tajima’s D (−0.685, p-value 0.297) and Fu’s FS (0.267, p-value 0.591) showed no significant signals of extreme demographic changes. The Baltic Sea free-living Fucus is confirmed as F. vesiculosus or a closely related species. Haplotype diversities are comparable between forms (attached Hd = 0.306; free-living Hd = 0.268). The relatively short temporal scale for colonisation alongside low variance in the Fucus mitochondrial genome results in a rather panmictic structure across the Baltic Sea. Our data suggest that the mitochondrial intergenic spacer and 23S poorly describe the evolutionary dynamics of Fucus spp. in such a young, postglacial environment, yet this concatenated-barcode advances our understanding of the colonisation dynamics of F. vesiculosus over deeper demographic timescales.
