Body sensations have subjectivity. One of their components is tied to the specific place where the feeling develops. Their other component is related to the functioning of the nervous system and the brain, which amplify, weaken, or transform the sensation. If we feel pain somewhere in our body, the interesting way is not the local influences that are definitely present, in fact, not even the activity of the sensory nerve coming from there, but the perceptual function of our brain. For example, phantom pain cannot be a local factor, as the pain occurs in a non-existent (e.g., amputated) part of the body. And if, during hypnosis, we tell the patient to burn his skin but touch it with just a pen, the brain colors this stimulus into burning pain. The most direct stimulus can be triggered during wakeful brain surgeries simply by stimulating the appropriate areas of the brain, bodily pain can be caused. But even in a modified state of consciousness, we may be able to generate a sense of physical pain through our purely conscious activity.

RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) is an important enzyme for coronavirus to catalyze the replication of RNA from RNA templates. Lung et al.4 at Taiwan firstly found that theaflavin being able to dock in the catalytic pocket near the active site of RdRp in SARS-CoV-2, SARS-CoV, and MERS-CoV. Furthermore, by the two different molecular docking methods, they revealed that theaflavin having the lowest idock score and lower binding energy in the catalytic pocket of SARS-CoV-2 RdRp.4 The above suggests that theaflavin could be a potential inhibitor of SARS-CoV-2 RdRp. In addition, previous studies have shown that theaflavin and theaflavin gallate derivatives having antiviral activity against influenza A and B viruses5 and hepatitis C virus.6 As known, theaflavin is a polyphenolic compound in black tea. Hence, a proper intake of black tea could be considered for the prevention of COVID-19.

Introduction: Several studies have demonstrated the importance of some plants for the treatment of depression because they are sources of 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), among them, Griffonia simplicifolia stands out, especially when dosed and formulated as an herbal remedy. Objective: The purpose of this article is to conduct a narrative review on the treatment of depression through the phytotherapic Griffonia simplicifolia . Method: A bibliographic review and a search of the electronic index databases MEDLINE/ PubMed, Web of Science, CAPES journal portal, BIREME and Google Scholar were carried out. Results: Phytotherapy is only equivalent to allopathy only in the use of the law of the like. However, its substances come only from vegetable origin. Thus, unlike allopathic drugs, it cannot be called a drug, but an active principle. Thus, both allopathy and phytotherapy agree to increase the availability of 5-HT in the treatment of depression. In this sense, among these medicinal plants tested in the laboratory, this study chose Griffonia simplicifolia that presents pharmacodynamic conditions for the treatment of depression because it is a source of 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP). Research has shown that Griffonia simplicifolia extracts increase the level of serotonin in the brain. Each seed is estimated to contain about 6 to 14% of 5-HTP. In some countries, after an industrial extraction, the researchers combine the contents of several seeds to provide 95-98% of 5-HTP in each capsule. Conclusion: The studies presented in this narrative review demonstrate that 5-HTP extracted from Griffonia simplicifolia can be effective in the treatment of fibromyalgia, chronic headaches, insomnia, in the anxiety control and, above all, in depression.

All of humanity is inflicted by COVID-19 that is a pandemic respiratory illness, caused by a highly infectious form of novel Coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, discovered at the end of 2019. Some of the typical symptoms of COVID-19 patients, includes fever, dry cough, shortness of breath, acute respiratory distress syndrome, the loss of taste and smell. Herbal medicines have been traditionally used to treat cold and flu symptoms, as well as diseases of the respiratory system. Certain medicinal foods could be used as a therapy or to prevent infection and as well strengthen immunity. Many people believe that consuming herbal immunomodulators can prevent or even treat COVID-19. Many foods and herbs are also known to display antiviral and immunomodulatory activities, these immunomodulatory herbs could enhance the immune system and protect the body against COVID- 19. This paper describes 16 medicinal food plants that are used traditionally to prevent or treat viruses and other diseases, including COVID-19, and strengthen the immune system.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder of the brain which leads to a decline in memory and cognition. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved medications provide only symptomatic relief and are often associated with adverse effects. Many natural products have shown their activities against AD. Bioactive compounds like polyphenols, tannins, alkaloids, flavonoids, terpenes, sterols, etc are present in various plants. These compounds have shown antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticholinesterase, and anti-amyloidogenic activities. This review article discusses the benefits of various plants against AD.

Plectranthus vettiveroides is widely distributed throughout the Sri Lanka. The plant is used as folk medicine in the treatment flatulence, liver disease and jaundice. The plant has bitter taste, cold potency and pungent resultant. The present study was carried out to evaluate the antipyretic potential of infusion from the root powder of Plectranthus vettiveroides . Female and male Wistar rats of with body weight 230-250g were used. Which is divided in to 3 groups, in each contains 3 animals. Rats were familiarized to laboratory conditions for four days before the commencement of experiment. Fever was induced by sub cutaneous injection of 15% Brewer‘s solution (2.5ml) in the nape of the neck. 18 hours after the giving of fever induced drug, rectal temperature was measured. Then the measurement was repeated after 30 minutes. After that infusion of root powder of Plectranthus vettiveroides (0.5ml) was orally administered to the test group, 0.5ml of normal saline (0.9%) for control group and 0.5ml of Paracetamol for standard group. After animal received the test compound or the standard drug by the oral administration, the rectal temperatures were recorded again 30, 60,120 and 180 minutes. Single dose administration of test drug produces significant antipyretic effect in Brewer‘s induced fevered rats. The root powder of Plectranthus vettiveroides showed significant reduction in the elevated body temperature of rat which was compared with standard Paracetamol. The results suggest that the infusion of leaf powder of Plectranthus vettiveroides possess antipyretic activity and can be used as potent natural antipyretic drug.

Female and male Wistar rats of with body weight 230-250g were used. Which is divided in to 3 groups, in each contains 3 animals. Rats were familiarized to laboratory conditions for four days before the commencement of experiment. Fever was induced by sub cutaneous injection of 15% Brewer‘s solution (2.5ml) in the nape of the neck. 18 hours after the giving of fever induced drug, rectal temperature was measured. Then the measurement was repeated after 30 minutes. After that infusion of root powder of Plectranthus vettiveroides (0.5ml) was orally administered to the test group, 0.5ml of normal saline (0.9%) for control group and 0.5ml of Paracetamol for standard group. After animal received the test compound or the standard drug by the oral administration, the rectal temperatures were recorded again 30, 60,120 and 180 minutes. Single dose administration of test drug produces significant antipyretic effect in Brewer‘s induced fevered rats. The root powder of Plectranthus vettiveroides showed significant reduction in the elevated body temperature of rat which was compared with standard Paracetamol. The results suggest that the infusion of leaf powder of Plectranthus vettiveroides possess antipyretic activity and can be used as potent natural antipyretic drug.","PeriodicalId":92796,"journal":{"name":"International journal of complementary & alternative medicine","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-05-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49170721","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In recent decade, Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) and Integrative Medicine (IM) have been broadly developed in lots of countries and districts. From strict definition point of view, IM involves the both area of CAM and Western Medicine (WM).1 In actual medical practice, however, CAM and IM have been more prevalent and known in European and North American countries.2 On the other hand, Integrative Medicine Japan (IMJ) has been the main association that has developed CAM/IM in Japan.3 Author has managed the activity of IM as the director of Shikoku Island division of IMJ for years.4 Among them, we continued annual congress, publication of year book, academic papers and seminars for various themes of music therapy, depression, hydrotherapy, rehabilitation and so on.5,6 For the current year, we have challenged a new area for art therapy, hospital art and rehabilitation using masking tape.7–9 In this article, two topics concerning CAM will be presented. One is music/ art therapy for cancer patients, and another is hospital art.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a global pandemic disease, and has reached a new dimension with a higher death ratio. Repurposing of known drug molecules against COVID-19 has become an elegant strategy to quickly develop effective therapies. On other hand, herbal medicines have been issued for the prevention and treatment of COVID-19. Thus, repurposing of the herbal medicine used against respiratory infections for management of COVID-19 is the novel approach to seek for remedies of COVID 19 pandemic as relief of the respiratory symptoms are the best options to mitigate the severity of the novel virus. Accordingly, the potential herbal medicines are recommended for the treatment of COVID 19, which are previously used for treatment of respiratory infections.
